Apple Posts Video of iPhone 4 Press Conference, Antenna Information Pages

Mr Jobs

I've watched the video and I thought Steve looked like a sulky child throughout. Looking at the floor constantly, very little eye contact with the audience and constant reminders about how hurt Apple employees were hurt by the criticism.

Seriously? Take criticism on the chin. Learn from your mistakes and make better products. Don't sulk!

Hey San Fran, put pressure on your local Politicians!

I live near Chicago. Many cell phone providers collaborated and decided to share a new tower. It took over 2 years for the local politicians to agree to it and in order for it to get approved, the tower had to be seamlessly integrated into an existing church steeple. They literally had to build a giant, tall brick tower, fill it internally with antennas, and top it with a cross.

Amazing. Now I know why my cell phone bill is so high.

I honestly find it hard to believe that only .55% are having issues. Also the thing I don't understand is Apple was not acknowledging there being an issue before. But today they decide to say there is a problem?

And not to mention when people did call Apple Care, people had reported them saying "There are no signal issues".

Why should we trust anything Steve says on the video?

Of all the people I know with one, not one of them is having an issue with the antenna. I am, admittedly, having the proximity sensor issue. I think part of this is media hype. You can't turn on CNN/MSNBC/FOX without them blowing this up to be a very widespread problem (MSNBC's headlines were "Rotten Apple" - though their story itself admits very few are reporting the problem). Media love a sensational story - the most popular "cool phone" of the last 4 years, the one people stood in lines for, having _any_ reported trouble is something new for them to talk about.

Wow. Your Intuition is terrible. The i4 was the FIRST product I ever bought on launch day. I'd do it again as I've had no reception issue.

Thanks for the free laugh. ;)

Hey Blondie, you missed my point completely, twice.

Sorry to have hurt your feelings.

Steve did the right thing and I'm very much Ok with that.
BTW: For those who think they deserve a refund for aftermarket cases, you are true silver-spoon idiots!

If it's only .55% iphone with issue... then I just want to replace my iphone with another one that isnt effected the other 99.45%... if it's not a lie

Every phone has the issue, only 0.55% feel it bothered them. The reality is I'm sure there were MANY more thousands who it bothered, but why call when it became a national known issue? It became a waiting game to see what apple would do.

For me, I haven't bought one yet because we were waiting for the white to come out to buy the black for me and white for my wife at the same time. What I didn't want is for a "4.1" to come out, and be stuck with a 4. Now that I know the full story, I'll buy the phones, put them in (now free) cases like we always do, and be fine with it.

That being said, I still feel for the people who (1) don't use cases, and there are many, and (2) feel locked into a phone they aren't happy with because of countless App and iTunes purchases. Those people do exist, and they got shafted.

Isn't that Apple's fault? When they release a product, they make it look like they have found the cure for cancer. Now that they have failed with one of such MAGICAL devices, they have to suck it. Probably this will give Steve a very much needed amount of humbleness.

To the people who are saying "IF ONLY X PERCENT OF iPHONES HAVE THIS PROBLEM THEN I CAN JUST GET ANOTHER ONE AND MY PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED" and "IF IT'S ONLY AN ISSUE ON A FRACTION OF PHONES, WHY DID [media website] BUY 3 THAT DIDN'T WORK"

It's not a hardware problem that only affects some phones. It entirely depends on your location and the quality of your signal. Getting another iPhone 4 won't do anything unless you move.

Is there any product that doesn't do that? You can't watch a commercial for shaving cream without it looking like a flock of scantily clad women will cling to you seconds after you shave. Every Volvo ad makes it look like driving any other car will surely lead to your death in a car crash. Marketing always tries to sell sexiness, whether its design, innovation, etc.

All smart phones have that problem if you put your hand over the antenna, yes...but not all smart phones are stupid enough to have their antenna on the bottom lower corner where your hand is extremely likely to cover it!!! The SMART place to put an antenna is the TOP of the phone where it is least likely to be covered.

Wrong, almost all phones now put the antenna at the bottom of your phone so it is farther away from your brain when you are using it.

I too was disappointed that the Q&A was cut. What puzzled me after hearing Jobs' explanations: if the antenna design is superior the why didn't the call drop rates go significantly down (even Jobs was puzzled by this)? And more importantly, why give people cases to cure a non-existent problem? This seems to be a tacit admission by Apple that there really is a problem.

The question you should all really be asking is WHY did Apple have bumpers already for action at iPhone 4 launch?

Wasn't the amazing design of iPhone 4, with its metal band, so iconic and sleek? Yet Apple already had bumpers to cover it. WHY?

Simple answer, they already knew of the reception problem.

SO TRUE!!!! It certainly is not designed to protect the phone.

Sorry but this is getting really crazy... i have a Nokia 5530 a smartphone... If i hold the phone like in the video, i got.... no signal drops... even with 2 hands... no drops!! Never drops!!! So it's freaking ******** that he is showing us in the beginning of the video "that this happens with all smart-phones" ... c'mon man!!!

Also, in the beginning of the video he says "we are not perfect", i remember a few weeks ago when i watched the WWDC keynote he constantly told us: " we are the BEST company, with the BEST phone and the BEST os"

And please, GET SOME NEW CLOTHES FFS!!! He is wearing that **** for really a decade!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to say that Steve Jobs is absolutely correct when he says that the antenna reception issue is a problem with all smart-phones. In fact I always had suspicion about my 2G iPhone.

In fact, I just tested my 2G, which had full bars sitting on the table. As soon as I gave it the "Death Grip" it dropped down to two bars. So what gives...

Please don't confuse me with the all the fanboys out there. I have been critical of Apple many times in the past over a whole host of issues, but I have to agree with Jobs on this one. This issue has been over hyped by media forces always on the lookout of some big story especially with those who have been highly successful. Once the hype builds, and builds, it snowballs without regard to any facts. Steve Jobs nipped this one in the butt.

Can Apple do better? Of course. The question is, will they do better? That answer has always been yes. ;)

And another idiot on the board. They had bumpers because (1) most people use a case on their iPhone, (2) the cases can be sold for a HUGE markup and (3) Apple would like to make lots of money based on that huge markup.

I was just saying... if what steve said was true then exchanging the phone would be the best solution if only .55% effected.
But it more sense the number is alot higher number effected because 1. bumper design was offered at start?? 2. huge number of reports of signal lost (CR, and others) 3. self experiencing it

How did I know when I came onto MR this afternoon that the same people who were upset would still be upset?

Ever since the pre-orders for iphone 4 started the onslaught of complaining has been fascinating. Someone please make a thread called "I'm here to complain, & will find any reason to voice those complaints".

So exactly why do you think most of the other smartphones have their antenna so low?

If you put the antenna at the top, nearer your head, you have to greatly lower transmitter power to get a decent SAR rating. Net loss, possibly a worse communication channel than covering an antenna at the bottom. Plus a user can't work around the issue by moving their hand. They're stuck with a bad low power connection.

Just like the iPhone 4, it depends on your location and signal quality. :)

I don't discuss that. My point is that the press have been applauding Jobs, naming him CEO of the year, more blah blah tech company, more this, more that, etc, to the point that it makes people sick of how much Apple they have to diggest everyday. Now that the press is on the other side, he better suck it. That's how life is.

But it's not a case, it's a "Bumper"! Make you feels better does it that Apple is charging $30 for a peice of material that cost less than a $1 to produce. How much do they love their user's???

If it was also such a low percentage, why didnt he just ask them to bring in for replacement.
3million phone... x .55%
16,500 effected phones? easier to just replace phone, in a replacement program. wouldnt it be???

What good would replacing an i4 with an identical unit do? They're all the same, the 0.55% and all the rest (minus some tiny number of truly defective ones, like the one that caught fire.)

Troll. Learn the issue before commenting. And don't quote someone when they never said those exact words. Could be considered defamation.
