Apple Potentially Developing Fitness Center Application for iOS

i'll put in my bit...i'd like it if it could connect, kinda like nike already does, to heart rate (spinning and weights) cranked with my own personal data and history, similar to polar but without the chest band..and i like setting a goal for the session and by hitting the goal "they" give me a smoothie..that, i like. i think there is something out there like this, not sure what.

Wrong room indeed. Probably the only exercise the above posters get is picking apart macrumors stories. I wonder how many of the above posters actually delved any deeper into what the patent is all about.

LOL I was gonna say. Fitness isn't a top priority for the general member here, hence why it has as many negative votes as positive :p. C'mon guys, work on those Mac bellies ;)

Maybe if they hit the gym more than can get rid of that condition they have: knee jerk reaction.

I'd like to see iPhones/iPod Touches count how many pushups, sit ups, chin ups, etc. we do. Also, hookup to treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes and other equipment. I've heard some equipment does that. Add to that the Nike+ running stuff, and that's great.

And with the bikes, ellipticals and treadmills, maybe your exercise could help power your iPhone. Add another benefit to exercising. Woo-hoo!

My in gym motivation is looking at the women.
My after gym motivation is having sex with the women.

After gym motivation=food seems counterproductive.
The only true reason to be there is to get some... by being thin and fit and living a little longer.

HAHAHAHA Brilliant Truth!

But seriously why all of the Hate. America is too damn fat and we could use some better fitness training. half the people at the gym I goto are there to look at themselves and other people in the mirrors! Lets get in shape people!

In support of this concept, I give you exhibit A… Apple SVP Bob Mansfield

Yum!!

I will get one of these, right after I get a "double double" at In and Out Burger!!

seriously how can this be patented?

This is the problem with the reflexively anti-patent people.

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that can be patented. Most patents seem obvious in hindsight, yet for some reason no one actually thought of it enough to create it (or even patent it).

This is pretty awesome. I don't understand why people would downvote it. If you are not interested, its easy enough. Just don't download the app (or if its like the weather, etc., and cant be deleted, put it in your "unused Apple apps" folder on the 10th page).

Why do people join gyms only to sit on equipment that others are waiting for and gaze at their phones for ages?

Seriously, switch those stupid things off. You will make better progress than any 'fitness' app will deliver.

If it's part of something more integrated I could see this. For example, it may be able to connect to certain equipment which would log your progress, reps, time, etc. Creating the connectors for things like a Nautilus machine wouldn't be that much of a stretch. Imagine having this on an armband unit, using NFC so that you can listen to your workout info, and have it alert you every 10 reps and apply that to a downloaded fitness program. It would almost be like having a virtual trainer for far less cost.

I don't think this should be looked at as a serious product intent by Apple. More likely, it is intended to pull together a number of related specific claims under one umbrella patent application.

Strands has had a simular app for a couple years. Workout tracking + social networking. http://fitness.strands.com. It also intergates with the WIFI scale from Withings. The scale also has its own app. I've had the scale for a year now, and have been using Strands for 1.5 years. Best of all, Strands is free.

Actually, when I'm going out to do some sports I don't even take my phone with me. It's the exact reason why I take some time doing it every day. The idea that even when I'm running around I'm holding that damn phone in my hands is freaking me out. Really. I WANT that time out, it's the reason why I'm going outside, to get some distance.

If you are trying to lose weight, there is no need for a gym at all. I weighed 279.9 lbs two julys ago, started running with Loseit! and Runkeeper. After counting calories for a while there was no need to use it, because, when you're in that mindset you know whats good for you and what's not. I ended up getting down to 207.7 lbs at my lowest weight. No gym at all. All running. And guess what? It sucked. But using some apps like runkeeper helped keep me motivated (and the chicks that I still couldn't attract lol).

Long story short -> if you want to lose weight you dont need a gym. eat healthy and run. Use apps as motivation if you need.

Would love to see something new like this from Apple. I've logged more than 12,000 miles using Nike+, but my relationship with that system is beginning to sour. The built-in Nike+ app is lackluster, and the Nike+ GPS app sold by Nike is flawed and crashes frequently.

I think that this is a great idea. Having an integrated app would definitely motivate me more to hit the gym with the whole "social" aspect of it.

Very interesting.

hmm...

wonder if this had anything to do with Apple suddenly kicking their top fitness app developer (iFitness) out of the app store

interesting

I can see the automated posts on Facebook now, "Karen has gained weight, tell her to go to the gym." I'm sure it can be said a bit more social. Or better, automated cross reference with your social calender. Something like "It has been six months since your wedding and you have gained ten lbs. Time to see a doctor to see if you are pregnant or need to loose weight?"
