In a new research note outlining his predictions for Apple's recently completed financial quarter and beyond, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shares his thinking about some of Apple's upcoming product plans that will provide sales momentum in the latter portion of the year.

    - Apple Watch: Kuo remains conservative about the Apple Watch, pegging Apple's second quarter shipments at roughly 3.9 million and growing to 5.5 million in the current quarter as supply shortages ease and availability expands to more countries. As a result, he believes it will be difficult for Apple to reach Wall Street consensus estimates for 15 million units total through the end of the year, though analyst estimates have seen wide variations and Apple is indicated it will not be reporting Apple Watch unit sales in its financial results.

Notably, Kuo believes Apple could launch the Apple Watch Sport in new color options to match iPhone 6s colors later this year, anodizing the watch's aluminum casing with yellow and rose gold. Kuo and other sources have previously pointed to a new iPhone color (reportedly rose gold) and Kuo indicated months ago that Apple could use new casing options for the Apple Watch later this year.

    - iPhone: Kuo believes Apple shipped roughly 54.2 million iPhones during the second calendar quarter, and he predicts that number will fall to 40.1 million in the current quarter as sales slow ahead of the "iPhone 6s" launch and shipments of the new device may get off to a somewhat slow start due to "low yield of Force Touch."

    - iPad: Apple's iPad sales continue to slide, with Kuo predicting the company shipped just 8.8 million in the current quarter. He believes a thinner and lighter iPad mini that is essentially a smaller version of the iPad Air 2 could begin shipping at the tail end of the quarter, helping boost overall shipments to 11 million units during the third calendar quarter. Apple's iPad launches typically come in October, however, so shipments may not begin until the fourth quarter. In line with a recent report claiming Apple may not introduce a new iPad Air this year, Kuo does not mention any pending updates to that device. He also does not address the even larger "iPad Pro" that has been rumored to launch later this year.

    - Mac: Kuo predicts strong Mac shipments of 5.3 million units for the second quarter, rising to over 5.8 million in the current quarter, which is traditionally Apple's best quarter on the strength of back to school sales. He sees Apple releasing new iMacs late in the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter, helping to sustain Mac demand.

Kuo has a solid track record based on information from Apple's supply chain, but he does occasionally make incorrect predictions. As a result, some caution should be taken with these predictions.

Now I eagerly await to see if a Rose Gold Aluminum Sport becomes a possibility.

Though since I have a black 6 now I should probably get the space gray.

My prediction: sales on current devices will slow down for a couple of months before picking up again in September/October and the number will be pretty high in December.

iMac's with Skylake? Any chance of it gaining a 2TB SSD, similar to the one Samsung just released? What about a 4k 21.5 inch?

    Anodized yellow and rose gold?

Is this for the Apple Watch, or is this for Samsung's or Xiomi's garbage ripoff products?

Or maybe SSD upgrade that doesn't cost an arm and a leg
It's 2015 already and apple is still putting 5400rpm hard drives in their iMac. ridiculous.

What about the update to the wireless keyboard that was rumored? Would like to see that with the backlit keys.

On the watch scene, I would like to see the yellow gold that matches the MacBook, iPhone and iPads. When it comes to watches I do prefer the gold over silver. Since I am waiting on getting my watch, a gold sport version may give me even better incentive.

It makes ZERO sense to make fake yellow and rose gold sport models.

iMacs have typically seen a ~3 year case design refresh cycle. This fall will be the 3 year mark (crazy) since the thinner iMac was introduced in 2012. My late-2013 Haswell 27-inch iMac is my favorite device, but could be tempted to pick up a 5K version in a case redesign which minimizes the chin and bezel a bit. Would love a space gray, silver, gold option with a 512GB SSD in the $2K ballpark. Bring it on.

I'm shocked (shocked, I say!) that analysts are predicting production delays for a new Apple product.

Where do you get 3 years from? My iMac was bought the day the design prior to the current one first went on sale and it'll be 8 years old this Fall... If Apple were to release a new iMac design it would be the 2nd redesign in 8 years, suggesting that they do it once every 4 years.

Honestly though, I don't expect new desktop designs. Laptops and mobiles are the future - desktops are a dying breed and the current designs are fine. The people who still need them care more about what's on the inside than what they look like.

This is different. It makes no sense for Apple's sake to sell an anodized gold / rose gold Apple Watch Sport for $350 because it would demolish the exclusivity factor of buying the gold Apple Watch Edition. Why buy a $10,000 Apple Watch Edition when you can get a gold one for $350?

But we're talking the new Apple, where fashion is key.

I hope the next iwatch adds something more than rose gold! I won't touch it until I see some significant improvements.

I believe he has a real solid source, but either his source or Kuo himself always add a false prediction, so he always gets one thing wrong (for example fake rose / gold colors this time). This is either for protection, or simply for the sake of being foolish (I'd say it's a little bit of both).

Because one is shiny, polished 18K gold, and the other is gold-toned anodized aluminum, just like the iPhones.

It's a little bit like saying, "why buy a stainless steel Apple Watch when the silver Apple Watch Sport is available? They're both grey!"

For the same reason Apple put a $49 sport band on a $10,000 watch. I typed it. I know it's true. But I still can't believe they did this!

    - August 2007 - iMac gets aluminum/glass enclosure in 20" and 24" configs
    - September 2009 - iMac gets new wider look in 21.5" and 27" 16:9 IPS displays
    - October 2012 - iMac gets new slim profile, laminated displays in 21.5" and 27" configs
    - October 2015...???

    ^This

As to your other point, Apple will continue to make iMacs as long as they sell and make them money. If the Mac is now a "truck" with the capabilities of iPads and iPhones, they actually serve a nice role in the product line - providing a big screen OS X experience for those who don't require portability.
