Apple has encouraged its display panel suppliers to scale up their investments in laptop-sized OLED displays, Taiwanese research firm TrendForce said in a press release this week. This revelation comes as Apple prepares to launch its first MacBook Pro models with OLED displays, which are likely still a few years away.

In line with previous reports, TrendForce said Apple plans to begin using OLED displays for MacBooks between 2026 and 2027.

LG and Samsung will likely be Apple's two major suppliers of OLED displays for the MacBook Pro.

Compared to current MacBook Pro models with mini-LED screens, benefits of OLED technology would include increased brightness, higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, improved power efficiency for longer battery life, and more. The switch to OLED displays could also contribute to future MacBook Pro models having a thinner design.

Indeed, thinner MacBook Pro models with OLED displays are rumored to launch in 2026.

In the interim, the MacBook Pro is not expected to receive any major changes. Unsurprisingly, next year's models are expected to get a spec bump to M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips, but no redesign is expected until the switch to OLED displays.

Apple updated the MacBook Pro line last month with M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips.

My 2020 14" M1 MacBook Pro is still serving me exceptionally well, so I might be ready to replace it in 2026 or 2027. :)
gotta love the longevity of Apple Silicon. it is beautiful in a post-Intel age.

running strong on an M2, there were some fairly tempting things about the M4 upgrade (nano-texture being the main thing) but ultimately—probably gonna hold out for OLED displays. having that in an MBP would be *chef’s kiss*

M6 series MBP will receive a redesign then. Sounds about right with Apple keeping a design for 5 generations.

My little M1 MacBook Air mchine is still blowing off some brand new laptop of my work colleagues. Fluid UI throughout, strong battery life that I've now comfortably leave my charger always, and fast 4k video renders are just mind-blowing.
I think I'll be fine until 2030 at the earliest*.

*If the temptation hasn't won me over thought.

There’s a lot of confluence happening for the next MacBook Pro redesign which should make it a big update in many ways. Aside from OLED displays Apple’s been apparently working on better batteries from their work on the Vision Pro & failed car project. They should also gain something from the move to 2 nm SoCs. And let’s see where Apple goes with behind panel cameras (that seems like in the sky at this point).

In fact OLED is one of the dimmest screens on the market. For iPad Pro they had to use two layers to achieve the same brightness of the current MacBook pros.

While it cannot come near the nit levels the best Mini-LED TVs can, the newer generations of QD-OLED and WOLED televisions have improved their brightness levels significantly. So we might very well see better brightness levels in a 2026/2027 MBP OLED display than we have now in the current MBP MiniLED displays. 🤞

The true blacks is the real winner with OLED.

Quite true.

I replaced my 2019 MBP with an M4 last week. OMG, it is amazing. Whereas the fan would start within about a minute of using the Intel 2019 MBP, I haven't heard the fan yet. My wife has an M1 and I knew it was nice, but didn't realize how much better it is for my stuff. No more cooking my lap when we go anywhere and bring my portable. :)

I’m looking forward to the new design it’ll likely get, like the iPad Pro got to make it thinner

Are the OLED benefits really going to be that noticeable for most? I'm sure there are noticeable benefits, particularly contrast ratios, but this keeps coming up as really the only news/thing to look forward to about a new MacBook Pro design, when for a lot of people, it won't really make much of a difference at all. The current screen is already very good.

I'm probably biased since I just got an M4 MBP and won't upgrade til at least 2030, but I think it says that the current MBPs are excellent since there's not much besides OLED and thinner in the rumor mill for 2-3 years from now.
