I went from the SE 525's to the SE 535's to the SE 846's and OMG, these are the best sounding headphones I have listened to. I demo'd them against a pair of Fit Ear (FitEar ToGO 334's) while in Japan but in the end the Shures won out. That 4th driver is sooooooo sweet. I love them. To date, even the higher end Ultimate Ears can't win me over. I have a Sony PHA-1 as a DAC, and Song's Audio Galaxy Plus replacement cable (the Shure cable was not that good) as the cable. I am in sonic bliss. :)

SONY PHA-2 plus Shure SE 846 equals sublime auditory experience; if you want an optimal setup, you could do far worse.

I like what Tim Cook is doing if Apple is getting back to an emphasis on music. We may also see some updated iPods if that's the case. Apple may be about to shake up the music world again. I definitely see the Beats acquisition (if true) to be a worthwhile move. Branding matters and Beats seems to have a large following for Apple to pull into the fold. Apple can always improve the quality of Beats hardware if there are audiophiles who don't like them as they are.

I just happen to think that Apple will be able to reach a lot more consumers with Dr. Dre as a front man. Apple seems to be a lily-white company that could use a little more color of all sorts. Gene Munster says he doesn't understand Apple's desire for Beats but he's going to look pretty stupid when iPhone and music sales improve immensely. I think the music world will sit up and take notice. Apple may be evolving again and that is just as good as innovation.

Maybe they'll reengineer the current cable/connector to add an optical channel alongside the copper?

Seems like a lot of work for marginally improved sound. And isn't Apple trying to get away from wires anyway?

Going with optical would be totally pointless. Not only would it make the whole thing expensive, the transceivers would take up a lot of space inside the phone and the cable would become even more fragile, optical fibre offers exactly zero benefits over copper at the cable lengths we're talking about here.

FLAC would be great! But why not support that in iTunes first? If Apple keeps selling iPhones with limited memory, FLAC (and any other loss-less formats) make no sense.

even the headphone jack's too fat for apple these days.

finally, a company that understands that I, the music listener, am greatly suffering as I'm not able to hear the immortal masterworks of Nirvana at 100,000 kHz quality. At times I'm unsure if I even know what the records truly sound like.

I REALLY loved my In-Ear Headphones for a while. From like 2007-2011 they were my go-to and I would be really super interested to see what they did in an updated version.

Hold on a minute, a new Lightning cable that will transfer HD audio playback? That doesn't make sense.

I took this to mean ".. and a new lightning cable." As in, a better designed one that won't fall apart after a few months of use.

Hang on, didn't Apple specifically say when they announced the lightning connector that it was going to be around for a long time? Why the rumour of a new one so soon?

It will most likely be backwards compatible. You just won't get any of the advanced features in the new one.

Similar to how HDMI has 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 specs, and USB 1.1 2.0 and 3.0

I think you are right. Apple needs to shake things up. While everyone else will continue with spec bumps, Apple is about to shock the world again.

I'm really hoping the lightning cable specs bump up with USB 3 support, or even offer a thunderbolt-lightning cable.

Who wants HD Audio?

Looks like yet another temporary sales gimmick. This will go over about as well as the HD CDs a decade ago. The average person does not crave HD audio sound. Price and convenience are usually the only significant wants and needs. It will only take hold if the overall price remains the same.

Panasonic Ergo earbuds are the most comfortable in-ear headphones I've ever used. Sound quality on par with the Apple version but way more comfortable over periods of time. Look them up. You can get a pair for under $10 on Amazon.

How about USB 3?!?

Instead of "Beats-ing" it Apple, why you don't you give us USB 3 / Thunderbolt via Lightning? Might make the entire reloading of a 64GB iPhone somewhat bearable.

Interesting indeed. Is this not an admittance that the most recent in-ear audio offering from Apple, the EarPods were in fact somewhat less than successful?

Not really earbuds are next to impossible to get right for everybody. Ears come in all shapes and sizes.

It sounds like a new cable probably with a new D to A chip.

Well, so long as the old lightning cable is compatible with new phones and old phones are compatible with the new cable... Then bring it on!

(I personally don't need HD audio, but I can imagine a lot of people who'd appreciate it)

Including the new in-ears (or at least the old in-ears) with new iPhones and iPods would be a step in a wonderful direction

FLAC would be great! But why not support that in iTunes first? If Apple keeps selling iPhones with limited memory, FLAC (and any other loss-less formats) make no sense.

Apple will probably never support FLAC as they have their own competing ALAC (Apple Lossless) format which is pretty much the same thing. If they want "HD" audio they will simply remove the 16/48k player and hardware limitations (the codec can already go higher than that).

Thunderbolt relies on PCI-Express to work. iPhone and iPad hardware don't have any PCI-E lanes and adding them is not feasible.
USB3 is very possible, however.
