Apple appears to be internally testing an iOS 17.2.1 update for the iPhone, based on evidence of the software in our website's analytics logs this week.

General-iOS-17-Feature-Orange-Purple.jpg

Our logs have revealed the existence of several iOS 17 versions before Apple released them, including iOS 17.0.3, iOS 17.1.1, and iOS 17.1.2.

iOS 17.2.1 would likely be a minor update with fixes for bugs and/or security vulnerabilities. Following the release of iOS 17.2 last week, some users have complained about a bug that causes the Messages app to disappear when rearranging app icons on the Home Screen, but it is unclear if iOS 17.2.1 would address this issue.

Given there are multiple holidays over the next few weeks, it is possible that iOS 17.2.1 will not be released until next month, although the update could be expedited if there are critical fixes. There was no iOS 16.2.1 update for precedent, but Apple released iOS 15.2.1 with a HomeKit security fix in mid-January in 2022.

iOS 17.2.1 would be a stopgap while Apple continues to test a larger iOS 17.3 update, which features a new Stolen Device Protection security option and re-enables the ability to create collaborative Apple Music playlists.

I hope they do. Honestly, I had very few issues with all the iOS 17 builds, but whew 17.2 gave me all the issues that others had complained about in the past. Overheating, weird WiFi, terrible connection handling, crap battery life, you name it.

I always install via IPSWs/Finder and I have a 15 Pro. Usually I don’t have problems, but 17.2 feels like an actual beta build for me.

Has Apple given up on ‘Rapid Security Response’? or has it been regulated to just a “OMG” moment where they need to have 99% of devices updated within 24 hours?

I don’t think we’ve had one in like 9 months or so… and I’m pretty sure it had problems for a lot of people.

Apple won’t do any update related to the patent ruling until the Preaidential review timeline is finalized 12/25

Could this also be the fix for the boot-loop my iPhone 13 mini experienced with 17.2?

Last weekend, days after the 17.2 update, the Music app became unresponsive and after turning off the iPhone I could not start it up again - permanent boot-loop. Had to erase and restore the iPhone from backup to get things working again.

Will be minor update with bug fixes but not expecting to see it this year. It will probably be released early next year.

Since 17.2, my iPhone frequently seems to crash, then get stuck in the Face ID screen for a while
Same here. FaceID is totally borked. Getting crashes and almost constantly being asked for my passcode because it can’t recognise my face anymore. I have to keep restarting my phone.

3 years later still waiting for fix for “infinite FaceTime call” bug and ANC on AirPods working on the left one after taking it out of the case… truly worth premium price Apple

Some of my iPad shortcuts have totally stopped working in iOS 17.2, but I doubt this will be fixed with a .1 patch.

The biggest problem of RSRs was the inability to patch the kernel.

The necessity of a small reboot is there too.

Honestly, when they were first announced, I think Apple would use them to fast-patch the second-last (and maybe the third-last) iOS versions

Good that Apple keep updating their OS just like any other company these days. Never thought i'd say this but maybe its a good thing to do what google does, scheduled monthly updates and then use RSR if its an emergency patch that needs to be applied.

I don't think earlier years should be a reference to when or if Apple will be offering a x.x.x release. These are bugfixes and security updates.

Maybe they will only be using this for when there really is a need for it.

iOS 17.2 also introduced a bug where iphone won’t sync with computer. It gets stuck at Step 2 Preparing to sync.

MDCrashReportTool is stalling and can be force quit in Activity Monitor or in Terminal with command

pkill -9 "MDCrashReportTool"

Once MDCrashReportTool is killed the sync resumes.

Maybe the 17.2.1 update will fix it.

The bug with iCloud Keychain passwords which use TOTP setup with Keychain wasn’t fixed with 17.2. I spend days with support of one service because of that bug. If you have TOTP setup in iOS Keychain for any account and decide to change the email or the password on the service with Safari on the account’s web site, iOS erases your setup TOTP and any notes kept with the account in the Keychain while updating the Keychain item. So I lost my TOTP verification codes and recovery codes kept in the notes there for that account. Tested it with different services where I have TOTP setup in the Keychain.
Reported it several tomes. Hopefully it will be fixed in 17.2.1.
