great. more easy car thefts electronically. thats all we need.

Plenty of car jackings here in Chicago

LA is already the car theft capital of the world.

Thank you APPLE for making it easier for the car thieves.
You know there's some major improvements included to protect against relay attacks? This is a mostly solved problem.

You stopped carrying keys around because that's a choice you made. But that still doesn't mean it's a problem. Using a physical key takes literally seconds to unlock a car. And failing that, wireless keys have been a thing for a long, long time and are actually faster than using a phone.

So again, this is one of those progress-for-the-sake-of-progress things that the world just didn't need. It's more for the people making the money off the phones and the cars than it is for you or me, or to solve some sort of real-world problem.
It's a major improvement for me.

1. No need to carry around a key, it's also easier to find a lost iPhone or Apple Watch than a physical car key. The cost of replacing a lost cary key can be a lot. Say I irretrievably lose my iPhone, I can wipe it and replace it (and thus the digital key) easier than replacing a physical key.
2. Not needing to carry a key is great for when I go to the beach, gym, etc.
3. Having to carry round a car key seems archaic to me and something that can be easily replaced with a phone. What if I need to lend my car to a friend? I can easily send him a digital key for a time.

You've not really thought through the advantages it brings.

  • Humans with limited pocket or storage space.
  • Humans that are forgetful and have trouble keeping track of items they need. Now, important items like House and Car keys can be attached at the wrist.
  • Humans that would like to temporarily share vehicles with others – without having to physically hand off a key.
  • Humans that have their hands full and would prefer to not go fishing for their keys.
Perhaps those aren't problems for you, but they are for some people. You're argument is like pointing to a digital camera and saying that mobile phone cameras are "progress-for-the-sake-of-progress that the world just didn't need".

Mobile phone cameras and digital car keys solve similar problems through similar means: increased convenience via the consolidation/integration of technologies.

That time when you stop carrying anything but your phone around, and your battery dies or you drop it. You lose your keys now, in addition to your wallet with credit cards, IDs, and insurance, your camera, your ability to call people, etc. You're either fully connected or free! FREE from it all.

Honestly I would not feel comfortable at all by doing that on a fancy car. If it happens to me to have bad luck, my car could be stolen in seconds as well as my beloved iPhone. The scene seems very risky to me, exposing both car and my phone.

But is it worth it? just curious...I just keep the car fob in my pocket and walk to the car and as I get near it the lights come on and I just open the door. It's a Subaru STi and has keyless entry. I would be very nervous not having the fob....just incase. If for some reason the battery died I would not be able to get in as there is a physical key that would open the drivers side door. Then I could get in the trunk and get out the jump battery.
I’m exactly the same. I’m usually for Apple solving a problem that people didn’t know existed, but I really cannot see it making any difference to me carry a key. I carry a wallet too with a couple of credit cards, but occasionally I have to pull one out.

Nice feature, but I can't say I'm desperate for it. I carry around a key fob for the following reasons.
- The ring can open beer bottles
- I have various keys for my shed, house, garden office
- I have an RSA token generator
- My car remote key fob. Unlocks the car when I get near

having to carry less in your pocket or potentially forget/lose, doesn’t solve a problem? Wait until you experience it before commenting…it’s literally my favorite thing having a Tesla the last 3 years.

Is it at all possible for Car manufactures to take advantage of this if their existing cars support unlocking the door through NFC with a key fob? My 2017 Ford Fusion unlocks when I put my hand on the handle if my keys are within close proximity to the door. Would be cool if this also worked with my phone in my pocket. But alas, I'm betting this is a feature that I won't be able to use until I get a new car in maybe 8 years or something lol
That’s how I am. Unless Nissan wants to add this technology to my existing car. I won’t use this for a very long time lol.

You think? just buy a metal box for your keys to resolve that.

Why would a(ny) carmaker integrate this tech into their cars when so clearly apple will be their future competitor? I would not expect them to pave a way for apple.
Because it’s not just an Apple standard?

Also because their consumer base demands it. I know it’s something I want in a new car.

For me it's priceless to not carry around or forget the fob. I believe that even if your iPhone's battery dies you still have several hours where the UWB continues to work to unlock and start your car.

I miss my G80, been thinking about getting another one and this definitely helps my decision.

why would i want to pull my phone out when i can already simply touch the door handle to unlock my truck?
Has anyone here actually read how this works?

You don’t have to, with Carkey 3.0 the phone can stay in your pocket and it automatically unlocks the door as you approach the car. Carkey 2.0 required you to touch the phone.

Why would you pull your phone out? The tech works by proximity, you don't have to take your phone out or even touch it.

Explain it to me. What am I missing?

Unless it opens the door for you, what’s the point? Having a key in the pocket means you can unlock the door as soon as you touch the handle, which you have to grab to open the door.
