For me, it's not that big of a deal if you are invested in the Apple eco-system, these things were bound to come out sooner or later. I think the biggest announcement was the introduction of iMessage because this potentially changes the smartphone space, specifically how damaging this could be to RIM. If you didn't think RIM could recover previous to the announcement, you know have reason to believe that they won't. With Windows Phone not doing too well and RIM at a standstill, it really has become a race between Google and Apple.
Agreed with the exception of being so iMessage specific. I think this really puts the hurt on RIM and Palm/HP now. Today's announcement shows who the big players are going to be...

Anyone else disappointed that we won't be getting these things until Fall????!

and apple dares to sue samsung???
lets see ...

If Maps truly isn't changing at all (the only thing I noticed was "alternate routes"), that's pretty pathetic. It's been virtually the same for 5 years!!

honestly I do not see iMessaging really doing to much damage to RIM so to speak because if you go over to iOS you still loss all your BBM contacts so that still there.

3rd party ones people jumped ship to will be the big thing because they still bridge the gap.
iMessaging will have the same problems as BBM did and that is no way to link up to other OS's.
Rumor mill does have RIM letting other OS hook into a more limited format of BBM. Mostly missing out on the file transfer side of it and being text only.

I hope we can get rid of the stock ticker on the lock screen. I don't need to check my portfolio every time I look at my phone.

Considering that this isn't coming out till fall, what are the chances that anything substantial will be added?

Apple is sleeping or something.. Nothing is available today?
My thoughts exactly. iOS 5 looks amazing, iCloud sounds amazing and Lion is okay (nothing really exciting there IMO). But not a single thing available today? This week, nothing? Fall?! Seriously?

Notifcations and Wireless syncing are definitely the most welcome. I'm disappointed the location aware feature of reminders isn't pushed further. I'd love for my phone to know when I'm at work and go to vibrate accordingly.

Google can't sue and have no grounds to - Android is open source, so Apple can do what they wish.

open source does not mean you can steal the lay out. It comes with its own rules and requirements and Apple could easily be violating those.

Mail - Send from Alternate Address?

Just one question about Mail -- Will I finally be able to set a mail account to send from an address other then the address on the account? I use gmail for my work mail. Currently recipients see my address as me@gmail.com but I want them to instead see me@mycompany.com. This is not currently possible.

When it comes out, how much will it cost?

iOS upgrades have traditionally been free for iPhones and version 3 and 4 (someone correct me if I'm wrong on 3) were free for iPod Touches

The only indication we got of a release date was in the Fall.

wifi syncing!

Man am I happy about wifi syncing!!!!! And most of the other features seem handy too...

I know I mention this a lot, but I would like to know if this changes the number of of computers you can sync your ios device to... because I would love to be able to sync them to more than one computer...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

So how does this iMessages thing work. I assume it replaces the current messages app. How will it work with basic texting? Will you have to specifiy if it is a regular text/mms or a message? Or will it automatically figure out if your contact has an iPhone?

iMessages

iMessages is awesome for me! That has sold me an iPad. I was wanting to get one or the other (iPhone, iPad) but with the ability to be able to do everything the iPhone can, but on a much bigger screen. SOLD! I will just have a feature phone to make calls on! Awesome! I know this is a weird thing to be happy about, but its awesome!

You're probably right and I don't mean iMessage will be huge as an app, instead it will be huge just because it really is the final addition to those on BlackBerry's that haven't already left for an iPhone. RIM has nothing really to market other than physical keyboard and security and those two are hardly anything significant in selling a device with the latter not really applicable to the average consumer.

Apple previews software releases. They debut hardware products. There's always months between them showing a software product and its debut, whereas hardware can come out as soon as that day.

It just seems odd this time because there's no hardware to announce and thus, nothing available immediately.
