I just love how they announced all this stuff 4 months before it is actually avaliable.

And what do you want them to do? Release a beta product to users that expect consistency and fluidity? This isn't an Android update ;) Also I doubt it will take 4 months to come, it is plausible enough for it to arrive before the September event and new iPhone 4S & iPod touches.

Granted, last year they did release iOS 4 Late June. So the wait will be longer this time.

Apple copy the LockInfo

iOS5 Notification is just a copy of David Ashman LockInfo.

You're probably right and I don't mean iMessage will be huge as an app, instead it will be huge just because it really is the final addition to those on BlackBerry's that haven't already left for an iPhone. RIM has nothing really to market other than physical keyboard and security and those two are hardly anything significant in selling a device with the latter not really applicable to the average consumer.

Well as a communcation tool (email and text messaging ) Blackberry is the best hands down. iOS email is by far the worse of the ones I use (WM, Blackberry, Android and iOS)

The hardware keyboard is just a lot nicer for longer messages. If you talk with people who have switch you will find they write less emails now on their phone and when they do they are shorter. Touch screen is just not as nice as the physical keyboard.
The loss of the physical keyboard is the biggest thing I miss about my blackberry. That keyboard was great. The email side of the blackberry was really nice as well and beat Android.
Now for surfing the web well blackberry OS 5.0 and down just sucks. I am not sure how good OS 6 and 7 are as I have never tried those out.

But Fall? I guess that's to coincide with the release of whatever the next iPhone will be (5 or 4S).

Gotta give the devs time to a) properly test the OS, b) start making use of those new features and c) perhaps most importantly check nothing breaks in their apps.

unless you're 100% apple fanboy wwdc was a big yawn this year

some cool little improvements but nothing spectacular

I'm sorry but that's nonsense. Apple chucked out three major features today that will all be available within a few months and which are potential game changers:

1) iMessage goes right at the heart of RIM and, if it works as advertised, WILL get Blackberry users transitioning to iPhone. It also adds built-in messaging for iPod Touches adding another major value-add for Apple to what's already a very nice product.

2) iCloud looks to be cloud services done properly. Again we'll have to wait and see how it works in practice but based on what we've seen Apple are far ahead of any other OS manufacturer. Geeks seem to forget that it's not about the functionality itself, it's about making it simple to use and getting everyone on-board. iCloud seems to have a real shot at doing that and solves a lot of existing problems.

3) Finally the big one, PC Free. The iPad just became a standalone computer at least a year ahead of Windows 8 hitting the market and with a vastly superior ecosystem and sync service for both media and data than anything else out there. It was already a huge hit, this is only going to increase its potential reach. Same goes for the iPhone and iPod Touch as well.

I'd also add Lion to that list, partially because there's a lot of very nice looking updates in there, partialy because of iCloud but mainly because of its delivery mechanism and price. OS updates through the App Store? Yes, some won't be happy about that but it's going to be fascinating to see how quickly the transition from Snow Leopard happens. Microsoft will be watching that one VERY carefully...

PC free

Finally, people with no computer experience will be able to get an iPad and use that as their only computer!

Now if only they could do the same with the :apple:TV... it's basically a screen-less iPod touch. Connect to your HDTV, use wireless keyboard and mouse... 99$* Apple computer for your living room.

* keyboard and mouse sold separately. :D

Google can't sue and have no grounds to - Android is open source, so Apple can do what they wish.

Funny you should mention that.

"Next is Safari. Safari is the best mobile web browser out there. It's also the most popular. We took Apple's Safari engine and open sourced it... it's the basis of web browsing on Android"

When he says they took the safari engine and open sourced it he means they took the khtml engine (already open source) , made modifications and were obliged by its license to release them open source.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Will the new features and built-in apps raise appetite for powerful apps or simply fulfill most users needs and put some devs out of business?
I hope the first one ;)

I understand that, but Apple aren't trying to sue Google because of Safari are they? Just as Google won't with the notification system.

Anyway, why are people so up in arms about Apple copying Android - competition is good for both OS's, Android takes the best from iPhone and over the past few years has added some really cool stuff - Apple is just doing the same now, why the uproar?

>iOS

Hory sheet we have android features!

>Lion

Hory sheet we have a repository!

:apple: always innovative

Apart from stealing Android notifications did they do widgets?

Actually, what they stole more closely resembles MobileNotifier, and that's the developer they hired. The notification popup is closer to WebOS, except at the top as opposed to the bottom. As for the "shade" like effect, it was the only thing they could do given their UI exists as it does now.

They have no widgets to speak of, although people seem to be talking about the interactive notifications on the lock screen and notification center as being widgets simply because you can swipe to go to them.

Lockscreen notifications! I started to tear up when they announced it...

this update is HUGE - it fills in all of the android / BB gaps and adds quite a few features they don't have. 1 big thing no one is talking about is AirPlay Mirroring. this is the first step in turning the iphone/ipad into a wii/xbox replacement. depending on how much control they give the game developers this could be huge.

Two best features for me definitely have to be notifications and iMessage. I can't think of anything more that I could have asked off iOS 5. Personally I am incredibly satisfied, best features of Android & Blackberry now on iOS. Love it.

You guys think any features you wanted were missed? Would love to know.

With the new notification system, I might not need LockInfo anymore. Will have to see. I probably wait until the next iPhone is released for iOS5. I am not sure how well this will run on my old 3GS.

I was quite happy with today's annocements. I would probably use all of these featured if I didn't want to change from my gmail address.

One of the small things I am looking forward to is AirPlay mirroring. Combined with the slingbox app will make an appletv that much more useful.
