Wow. That was fun. I can not wait for iOS 5. I loved notifications and iMessaging.

Fall seems so far. Le sigh.

I agree, I feel underwhelmed... the whole time I was waiting for that one - oh wow, I have to have that! moment, but it never came. I'm kind of sad to see OS X dying, since I am not a huge fan of touch based input...

So how does this iMessages thing work. I assume it replaces the current messages app. How will it work with basic texting? Will you have to specifiy if it is a regular text/mms or a message? Or will it automatically figure out if your contact has an iPhone?

I hope that it will completely replace SMS and MMS messages for the contacts that are on iOS devices in the messages app. So that if the recipient is using an iOS device you won't need to do things differently, but are given the improvements of encryption, not the limiting word count on SMS (usually not a problem these days unless you're paying for them individually or sending them to certain people with older phones that can't fuse the SMS together), or the limited image quality of an mms.

It would also be nice if they opened this up for developers to integrate other messaging systems like whatsapp, viber or different IM-platforms, which would allow you to send messages to anyone regardless of what network they're on.

Nice that Apple has copied so many features from other systems
"Think different" indeed

Wont be long now till Apple becomes the new Microsoft

I've been hearing the 'LOL APPLE THE NEW MICROSOFT' line for the past 10 years.. what the ****ing hell is it supposed to mean? You're pathetic.

You would have bitched if they didn't add the features. You bitch when they add them. Pretty much every modern ****ing mobile OS in existence was based on the original iOS. How many possible way can notifications be created in a way that is logical and useable on a 3.5in screen? How would Apple has done them in an 'original' way, in which you would have been pleased? If they were in a random language and holographic? Or if you had to invoke a 7 finger gesture to invoke them? Stop your trolling. Not every new addition can be OMFG THIS HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE BY ANYONE.

Not such a big leap forward but still really awesome. Apple is making more and more apps, however. And for the first time, I feel that iPod touch users are not left in the cold.

Here's a question nobody seemed to answer: after the first initial big file update to iOS 5.0, will further updates to iOS be done on an incremental basis--e.g., download smaller updates on an as-needed basis? This is very important now that Apple has "cut the cord" in regards to no longer needing another computer running iTunes to get the updates starting with iOS 5.0.

i forsee a conflict between notification center and sbsettings for jailbroken phones. i know you can change the gesture but why swipe up, left, or right for a window that slides down?

Maybe you missed this img, check the "customize UI"

Hehe "Location support in simulator."
Yes because you should be able to complete a basic CoreData/TablelView tutorial without having to buy a dev's account to run the app on device.

As a device user the update is really sort of incremental from what I've seen so far. Addresses stuff that really needed addressing.

As a wannabe Dev I'm seeing lots of stuff I'm hoping is API accessible.
The popover for Newstand for one. I really hope that is deploy-able as a document browser for any apps. Especially if it allows for per document tagging of notifications. If you do completely custom content in there then who needs widgets.

Google copied their system from webos and the jailbroke iPhone system. Both of those developers work for Apple. Unraveling who stole what from whom would be rather complicated.

Really? I believe Google has had those notifications long before iPhone jail breakers even got around to it considering the notifications the jail breakers have made are eh at best in terms of the work around they were forced to do.

So again Apple stole from Android not the other way around. Android expainded on a basic system that blackberry and dumb phones had been using for years.

As for notifaction on Apple. Welcome to 2001. Took you long enough.

Im VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!

Where are the WIDGETS??????

I wanted a homescreen change of look!! I hate having all the icons just there. I like more android homescreen with widgets and stuff...

STILL NO TASK MANAGER OR SYSTEM MANAGER??????

NO LIVE WALLPAPERS!!!! They look so cool on android... and I dont care about battery life, you can just turn them off...

It was NOT A MAJOR UPDATE!!

WIDGETS FOR GOD SAKE!!! I had them on symbian!!!

In the immortal words of Sir Terry Pratchett
"Four exclamation marks, surely a sign of an insane mind."

Yep, Delta updates is what Scott mentioned.

Wow I can't believe that Apple just blatantly ripped off Android like that. Still no file system access or flash either lol.

why do people want flash, html5 is on most sites now, youtube links work, imo flash on a mobile device is only for watching porn, but please give reasons for why the iphone needs it.

It appears that iMessage is apart of the Messages app.

Now I can take off the unlimited texting for $30 a month. I text but I don't go over 1500 so now I can save an extra $15 a month because of iMessage.

so no better voice technology? i really really want voice to texting on the iphone. they need to do this. android has it. wtf.

and no better GPS/maps/turn by turn directions? wth?

I can stream live tv at work on my EVO 4g and I couldnt on my iPhone since Steve won't let me use flash.

Will momentum scrolling dismiss the Notification Center by accident?

Is there the possibility that you may accidentally dismiss the Notification Center when you scroll up? It occurred to me that if you have many notifications, and you wanted to use momentum scrolling to see the ones further down the list, you may flick the whole Notification Center back up by accident.

For me, it's not that big of a deal if you are invested in the Apple eco-system, these things were bound to come out sooner or later. I think the biggest announcement was the introduction of iMessage because this potentially changes the smartphone space, specifically how damaging this could be to RIM. If you didn't think RIM could recover previous to the announcement, you know have reason to believe that they won't. With Windows Phone not doing too well and RIM at a standstill, it really has become a race between Google and Apple.

I agree with pretty much all of that, except imessage and RIM, i think Apple only does catch up here, and imessage for Apple only ecosystem does not attract me, only a few of my friends have an i phone, everyone i work with including competitors and business partners are using RIM, my latest BB is better by far at messaging and being a phone, including the updates in IOS 5. However i agree with you the smart part of smartphone is what is driving sales, and Google are the only competitors at the moment, is there anything here that stops me migrating to google, yes one thing itunes, i fear if i use a different phone my music and music streaming at home will be screwed up.

Hey Android: how ya like me now?

After you copied my Notification System 1:1 you are indeed a lot more attractive. ;)

And now I lean back and wait for the first Fanboy (or Girl) to declare that Apple “invented” notifications.

What do you mean? They pretty much copied android!! Everything is ios 5 is already in android's operating system. I think apple made them selves look foolish today!

You got voted down? Looks like the Fanboy can´t stand the truth. Mind you: I don´t think it is foolish to copy what is better ;-)

PS: The fact that I post here means that I do actually like Apple. Just the Fanboys get up my nerve.

Right, and Apples inventing the entire touchscreen design metaphor is irrelevant? Finger-driven UI, Inertial scrolling, rubber banding physics, App store, soft keyboard design, etc. Every other competitor have taken these things that Apple invented, but Apple can't occasionally draw influence from others as well?

People seem to forget that Apple was the one to really throw out the conventional desktop GUI mindset and create an entirely new metaphor for touchscreen computing. Apple literally invented the entire touch UI metaphor with those inventions. Those are the most basic things that people take for granted the most, but they are arguably the most impactful things from iOS.

I think Apples done their fair bit of contributing to the industry, there's nothing wrong with them drawing influence from others on some things where they are lacking.

There's a handle at the very bottom of the panel. You have to grab the handle to dismiss the panel, so no it won't accidentally get dismissed just by scrolling down.

“Made popular” ≠ “invented”

… App store, …

Apple did not invent the App Store. Handango, Pocketgear etc. pp had been there since the last millennium. That is unless you consider shackling the user to single store an “invention”.

… create an entirely new metaphor for touchscreen computing …

Sony Ericsson had touch screen GUIs for 5 years before Apple. And you could use them with your fingers. Not even the all touch screen GUI was new as the SE had detachable keyboards. Which of course means that SE had soft keyboard as well.

Apple did not invent all the stuff you mentioned. Apple improved on what was already there. Much like they improved on XEROX SmallTalk GUI when they released the original Macintosh.

I have apps from my Canadian, American and UK iTunes accounts on my iPhone, different apps on my iPad... How will the new OTA sync handle all of this?...

Do we have the technology?

There's some things I like about the new upgrade, but the one thing I'd really like is to be able to do is allocate a different sound to an incoming email. Y'know, so I can change the notification sound of an email or sms. I know I'm asking a lot, but that would be really cool. A bit like I could on my old Nokia 6680 that has been in the bottom of my kitchen drawer for about 3 years. The phone that could do emails, sms, video calls and erm... live TV including Sky News and Sky Sport.
Don't get me wrong, we are most certainly an Apple family here - our house looks like Fanboy Central. But a lot of these "updates' should have been included as standard on V1. To still not be able to do some basics like this I find quite incredible to be honest.
But hey!
