Nothing Apple introduced today is aimed at competing with Googles core business.

Not to mention that they are still business partners....

Year of the copycat indeed...

iMessenger - BBM or WhatsApp!
Notifications - Android notifications
Safari Reader - ReadItLater

I don't particularly mind that Apple is introducing these features, it just indicates that they're playing catch up by copying other OS' features. Yes, they'll be polished but... meh, I expect better than Apple. I'm on a 'droid at the moment, it was meant to be a stop-gap until the next iPhone. Now, I'm not so sure... why bother switching back when its just another smartphone, packaged with Apple's icons?

Because that's a completely backwards way to look at it. When you buy an iPhone, you're buying Apple's ecosystem, offerings and services. The UI experience is going to be mostly similar on all of the major smartphone OS platforms. The fact that people can't see that and get hung up on who is copying who is simply sad.

So.... You don't think HTC Sense and Apple iOS 5 are fundamentally different operating systems? And you don't think that Apple has borrowed heavily from other platforms and devs?

I'd be seething if I was on the LockscreenInfo team or on the Android notification team. Its like Apple have given you the middle finger and said, "hey guys, we're big enough to do this now, screw you".

Not at all. Before, I'd have to plug the iPad into the computer, now I can leave my computer downstairs and plug the iPad into a charger anywhere in the house. That's huge for me, I have a computer upstairs that potentially can go away now.

Sure, it would be good if it could sync at any time or be told to sync manually, but that's something they can add easily (assuming they're not planning to include the functionality already).

Yes, in that particular case, for people who have a separate charger and actually use it, it makes things easier. But it's nothing compared to the potential of the feature! Why can't the device just sync every time you make a change on your computer, or at least every day at 4:00 AM while you sleep or something? The technology is all there, all it has to do is activate it... And the wireless sync is activated by what... a CABLE! I think that's crazy.

That's like using your phone as a paperweight: it does the job, it's better than nothing, but come on, all this technology, wasted?

Does syncing eat battery life so badly? I hate changing one thing in iCal, then having to connect my iPod to sync. And then I realize I made a mistake, I have to do it again. Why not just have a "Sync" button in iTunes?

Apple loves to take sophisticated technology and only use 10% of its potential. It's like Bluetooth on the iPhone: you can't send photos or anything over from one phone to the other, even though they both have Bluetooth. Why not? It's just stupid. The only reason they have Bluetooth is to connect to 3 models of extremely expensive cars that happen to have Bluetooth connectivity with that specific phone. That's it.

EDIT: According to the newest MacRumors article, there is actually a "Sync Now" button on iOS devices... I guess it works even when not plugged in! That would be awesome!

Anyone know if/how I can install the iOS5 beta without a full restore? Would prefer an update...

Im VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!

Where are the WIDGETS??????

I wanted a homescreen change of look!! I hate having all the icons just there. I like more android homescreen with widgets and stuff...

STILL NO TASK MANAGER OR SYSTEM MANAGER??????

NO LIVE WALLPAPERS!!!! They look so cool on android... and I dont care about battery life, you can just turn them off...

It was NOT A MAJOR UPDATE!!

WIDGETS FOR GOD SAKE!!! I had them on symbian!!!
I can't tell if you are being serious or sarcastic. I hope it is the latter.

If you really want your phone to run like crap either get a crappy android phone or jailbreak your iPhone and install unstable crap to get the ugly and slow look you are looking for. You don't need a task/system manager unless if you are either running something like Android or running jailbroken with a bunch of unstable hacks.

I see all the nay-sayers and anti-bois coming out of the wood-work today. Hopefully you'll all disappear once the mist has disappeared and Apple get plenty of green ticks by the media and tech experts.

Personally, I couldn't give a rats ass if it's copied or not. A smartphone is going to inherit all of these features naturally and finding a different way of doing it is merely impossible unless you bring in new tech (example: mind reading/speaking etc). Did you all expect Apple to put the notification menu at the bottom and scroll up? Get real. Android's implementation of notification system is average and I've used/owned an Android phone. I'm dead happy Apple have thought it through carefully and not jumped it into a minor update half-baked. Everything added to the OS has consequences and google didn't clearly go through their own system as it was totally buggy very early on and it wouldn't notify you in a subtle way while in another app properly.

Yes, Apple may take "inspiration from" others, but at least there's some damn originality rather than the copy-cats who try to bust out features for the sake of PR and stats.

The general outlook of the UI... Why is it outdated? Why change it when it ain't broke?

I'm loving all the new changes and can't wait to get them included in all my iProduct range. :D

Done better.

Done way, way, way better. I'm sorry, there is no comparison to what we just saw today and 'google music features' coupled with amazon cloud storage.

Automatic and persistent document state/versioning across all devices simultaneously? Easy APIs for developers to utilize that same functionality in arbitrary apps? Seamless integration of cloud storage services with background upstream/downstream IO keeping everything tightly woven and ready to use at your fingertips regardless of which device you pick up? A couple of disparate, single-track utilities with no system-wide integration, no instant built-in utility, no cohesive, holistic approach to solving instant data sharing and synchronization do not a consumer solution make.

Comparing the iCloud implementation and its built-in integration with all iOS/Mac devices/software/applications to 'amazon cloud + google music' is like comparing a Mercedes-Benz to a 'little-red-wagon + leaf-blower motor'.

I think you watched a different keynote than I did.

You haven't even tried it yet to know LOL

All anyone has heard since android has been on the market (and the zune etc) is crying about how they are ripping off/copying apple. But now that apple is catching up to android in its featureset, its only fair to expect the reverse.

Hahaha you kill me! This may be best post of the year. Apple takes inspiration while others copycat bwahahah ROFLMAO

The amount of kneeling at the alter of Jobs is sickening.

Weeks ago most of you were baying for Samsung blood when they copied/borrowed/took inspiration from the layout of the iPhone's icons. Today, all of you are rejoicing in the fact that Apple have copied/borrowed/took inspiration from Android's notification system. You honestly don't see the hypocrisy in this?

They are different but they accomplish many of the same things in the same ways because that's what makes sense. Linux, Unix, OSX and W7 for all their differences have a lot of similarities in how they accomplish things and what they can do.

Of course, apple was fixing a feature gap by including this, but you have to look at what actually separates the ecosystems now. Apple has a more vibrant and quality appstore, they have better feature integration because they control their ecosystem top to bottom, etc. Apple is closing the gap to where the only striking feature about android is its customization and openness (which is evaporating too).

If anyone on any of these teams is offended, they're stupid. Apple didn't blatantly copy and the way they've accomplished it was logically one of the best solutions to the problem. They can't just make it different for the sake of it. I'd bet most people can't think of a way that Apple's new system could be improved without causing a major UI change or something that is against Apple's ethos.

are u kidding me? "iMessages" sold u an iPad??? dude u were able to do exactly the same thing for 2 years now with something called "WhatsApp" which u can even use to text ppl with nokia, blackberry & android phones

... some ppl

Yeah it is not the same thing.

The value in iMessage is that 10s of millions of iDevices will natively have it, which makes it much more useful for communicating with a large variety of people. This is one advantage Rim did have with BBM that is going to be gone.

Saying that WhatsApp is the same thing is kind of silly.

How does someone with WhatsApp send me a message?

They send me a text message? So what is the point of Whatsapp, they can send me a text message without it.

With iMessage they can send me an iMessage because I have an iPhone.

Right now apple is winning the tablet war, no question. Right now android is winning the phone war albeit by not so much. It appears Android is going to keep oneupping the iphone in hardware, as it wont be waiting until once per year for a hardware change. I fully expect to see iphone5 to have similar hardware to the Galaxy SII 6-7 months later. The only reason to go ios on both devices is to keep the same software. Personally I am staying Android phone and ipad for the foreseeable future.

Edit: maybe this will get google to give a seamless picassa sync :)

How do you define "winning?"

As I've said thousands of times on this forum, at the end of the day, there's only one thing that matters in business, and that's profits. Apple is winning in areas that matter. Apple is still far more profitable than any other smartphone manufacturer. The more profits Apple makes, the more cash Apple has to fund R&D.

Nice that Apple has copied so many features from other systems
"Think different" indeed

Wont be long now till Apple becomes the new Microsoft

Wow I think these updates are great. I really do love that notification center. A friend of mine pointed out that the swipe down and across gesture is a copy of Touchwiz on his Samsung. Not of Android, but of Touchwiz. I have to admit it does look like an exact copy of the Samsungs Touchwiz. In fact so much so that I was surprised when he showed me this. I can't help but wonder if Samsung will bring this up in their counter suit.

I use bluetooth headphones constantly with both my iPhone and iPad. I also share photos over bluetooth using photoshare. Have you even bothered to try to use bluetooth on your iOS device?

Wow I can't believe that Apple just blatantly ripped off Android like that. Still no file system access or flash either lol.

With Windows 8, iOS 5 making iOS pc-free, and the great xbox keynote today, technology has finally become totally awesome.

I'm gonna have an iPhone and iPad, girlfriend is going with wp7 and w8 tablet, and we will have an apple tv and xbox under the tv and that's it. No damn pcs or DVRs or DVD players. Just beautiful, nerd-free interfaces and great, fully integrated ecosystems.

It's been an amazing week for technology.
