Really wish they'd add weather integration, so that the car can warn you when you are about to enter rain.
It’s already there for weather warnings, but weather prediction is highly inaccurate. I just ignore the weather warnings, that makes you go around on a longer route.

When driving unfamiliar streets, especially in congested areas, the last thing I’m doing is focusing on the clouds and instead am worried about the various jerks doing 90 on their phones…

"Introducing the Apple Laser cannon*: able to mitigate the problem of various jerks doing 90 on their phones in torrential rains. We think you'll love it." ;)

You sound like you live in flatland.

Meanwhile, for those of us who live where there's terrain would find it helpful.

And weather along your route would be helpful, it would be nice to know that even though it's sunny and warm where you are, 100 miles down the road it's snowing.
Or lots of trees. I was driving south bound through Arkansas one spring, big trees all along both sides of the road. Nice day, blue skies. Suddenly winds kicked up out of the west and some of those trees were falling into the interstate, trucks and cars getting pushed around, then it went dark and a violent line of storms came through, then back to blue skies. Due to the trees we couldn't see any of this until it was already on us.

So yea, some heads up to upcoming weather would be nice. My old GPS used to have this as a feature (for a subscription price, of course). No reason to not bring it to Car Play. I currently use the OnTheWay app when I travel since it has weather radar built into the nav screen when it's running on Car Play. I think a few other 3rd party apps do this too.

Too bad so many manufacturers see CarPlay as a threat. They try to use technology as a differentiator, but most of them suck at it and we end up with confusing vehicle UI that are different in every car. They also want to use upgraded tech as a reason to buy a new car which is why this year's radio would never fit into last year's car...

CarPlay / Android Auto solves the UI mess and most of us have phones now and want to bring over OUR info., media and apps into the driving experience. I haven't bought a new car for a while now, but I certainly won't be buying one without CarPlay.
My next car purchase will depend on whether it has the latest car play or not. If not, NO PURCHASE!

Does this mean they are available in iOS 17.5 today? I don't understand what this means.
Weather advisories and warnings are already available in Apple Maps in the US. I usually get different routes based on heat/flood warning/thunderstorm or other severe weather alerts. Problem though is accuracy of weather predictions.

Agreed. Would be most helpful.

Yeah, because you can never tell when you’re about to enter rain. It’s like dry, not a cloud in the sky and then boom instantaneously rain.

Living in the Mojave/Sonoran Desert (south central Arizona and southeast California), when the monsoon season hits (mid-June through mid-August, typically), dust storms, severe thunderstorms and flash floods can pop up at a moment's notice. During this season, it absolutely can be "dry, not a cloud in the sky and then boom, instantaneous rain" - dangerous storms.

If the Weather app can tell you 15 minutes in advance of it starting to rain -- which it can -- then there is no reason why the same can't be done while you are driving. Some people do not drive well in the rain and a 15-minute warning would be enough in many cases for them to get off of a highway or pull into a parking lot and go inside to wait out the rain. Where I am sitting right now, it went from perfectly clear to torrential rain within a span of just a minute.

hoping carplay gets a new voice assistant.
i always mute the voice in carplay because its so terrible
1. announcing street names instead of street numbers on cross country rides (happens in France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Germoney, etc) even when you are in a town street names don’t count („next left“ would be much better)
2. foreign languages are poorly supported, its like a child is speaking (french, spanish, etc)

i wish they would show elevation stats on route alternatives. sometimes it make sense to avoid short distances when the route is guided over hills or mountains, for example in bad weather conditions, snow

Not saying it might not be useful, but how accurate would it have to be to be useful? I already get notified of foul weather statements in my area. Anything less than 100% means “you might run into some rain” which is no better than existing weather reports.

Yes.
There are so many low-hanging fruits in CarPlay.

Weather integration is one.

Another is Reminders. What's the point of a Reminder that's triggered by "When I get in the Car" if CarPlay then suppresses it??? Truly classic case of two divisions of a company working against each other!

Meanwhile in China, cities have centralized traffic light control AND traffic apps can tap into that, so that they can show a countdown timer of the red or green light ahead of you. I don't see why we can't have this in the US, but I'm unaware of anyone giving it to us. Another feature CarPlay should be providing.

There is a Weather app on CarPlay. It’s called Weatherology. You can always ask Siri what the weather is.
What you want is the map to indicate on the route ahead if there's "relevant" (rain, mist/fog, snow) weather coming up... Based on a combination of predicted time when you will get there, and weather at the location.

Being able to dim the screen even lower through carplay would be a nice option. Even with my headunit going into night mode and it set to the lowest brightness it's still really bright at night. It's comparable to a 15PM at about 30% brightness which in the dark can be quite distracting. No idea why they couldn't add this option.

Apple today previewed new accessibility features coming with iOS 18 later this year, and this includes some new options for CarPlay.

CarPlay-Sound-Recognition.jpg

Apple highlighted three new features coming to CarPlay:

  • Voice Control: This feature will allow users to navigate CarPlay and control apps with just their voice.
  • Color Filters: This feature will make the CarPlay interface visually easier to use for individuals with color blindness.
  • Sound Recognition: This feature will enable drivers or passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing to receive notifications on CarPlay for driving-related sounds, such as car horns and sirens.
All three of these features are already available on the iPhone and iPad.

iOS 18 is expected to be unveiled at Apple's developers conference WWDC on June 10, and the update should be widely released in September.

When are they going to give us the simple ability to turn voice navigation turn by turn directions on and off with Siri? Siri used to be able to do this a long while ago and they got rid of it. At least I can no longer figure out the magic words to toggle this, if anyone knows some magic words please share because I have searched hard for them. Requiring to touch the map once, then carefully try to touch the tiny speaker icon that was previously hidden while driving in a moving car can feel like a skill challenge and never feels like something I should be doing while driving, then requiring a third precision touch that requires you to look at the screen basically to choose which of the 3 options you need just seems like the least convenient way to do it. Not to mention if you don't know how this works attempting to figure it out while trying to navigate somewhere you don't know how to get to I am sure is a situation many people have found themselves in that has caused them to curse there iphone or worse get in an accident.

Hopefully such a feature is part of voice control

The more I think about this, the less practical benefit I see. It seems to me the limiting factor is the accuracy of current weather forecast technology and methods. If your destination is 2 hours away, predictions about conditions near your destination are likely null and void by the time you get there unless it is a sizable weather event, in which case, you would (hopefully) know about it before leaving.

Hell, where I live, any prediction of rain along my route without a major weather event (sizable storm, for example) would be useless even for a half hour trip, let alone a longer drive.

But assuming you could get that route based weather info with any accuracy, what would you do with it? Reroute your drive? Things like road closures already get worked into the GPS routing.

My Maps feature request is a PAUSE button when navigating. When we exit to buy gas (or any short duration stop) Maps constantly nags to return to the route.

As usual for Apple, instead of highly expected features like OBD scanner apps support, they add not needed ****.

Seriously, radar should be a layer when you enter areas of thunderstorms, ice, etc.

I know there are third-party apps that do it, but who wants yet another subscription.
