It's so crazy because in the small sample size of people around me, i don't know a single person who is upgrading. As far as I can see, so many folks are struggling and if it isn't broken, they are leaving their phone as is. Kudos to everyone who is able to do well and be making large purchases right now.

Agreed.
The world is so big, with so many people, that this sort of stuff crops up all the time.

I think I know 2 people who got new phones this cycle, and one of them is a friend here on the forum.

I don’t think you can take what is basically a tech forum as a realistic sample of the population as the whole. I know people with older iPhones than mine and none of them intend to upgrade as long as the phone still works for them.

I'm not saying the plain old 17 isn't a good phone. But if you were to spray paint both the 16 and the 17 the same color, people wouldn't be able to see the differences unless they happened to pick the newer one based on luck.

Doesn't really matter that they look the same; that's not what the base 17 is about. People who care that it needs to look different can buy the air or the pro.

I wouldn't be able to pick a 17 from a 16 in a lineup either; except if both were $799 i'd pick the one that comes with more storage. If the 16 256gb got discounted to $799, i'd still buy the 17 since it has a better screen too. If they discount the 256gb 16 to 599 or something, then we're talking. I'll get that one.

The 17 is a standout product this year because it didn't get a price increase, and instead got a price decrease; and gained features.
