Apple today released a new ad for Apple Watch Series 7 highlighting the device's durability when exposed to various wearing conditions.

In the ad titled "Hard Knocks," a number of scenarios are played out involving people either intentionally or accidentally exposing their Apple Watch to various weather conditions, liquids, and physical impacts.

Some examples include someone diving into a pool from a height, someone running for a bus and getting their wrist caught in the door, and a person falling while ice skating.

"The most durable Apple Watch ever," reads the tagline of the ad, which runs for 1 minute and 38 seconds, and features music by Jack White, "Power of My Love."

According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a version of the Apple Watch "with a rugged casing" that's aimed at athletes, hikers, and others who use the watch in more extreme conditions than day to day wear. It will feature the same functionality as a standard Apple Watch, but with improved impact resistance and protection. Apple is expected to launch the rugged Apple Watch in 2022.

They’re going after Garmin, apparently. I have an Apple Watch and a Garmin watch, and I use them for very different things. I use my Apple Watch for gym-related activities and hiking. But it’s horrendous for running and cycling, which is where the Garmin watch shines. Most of that has to do with the terrible way in which Apple’s GPS parsing algorithm works by applying path smoothing. It’s essentially useless for any distance-precision activity. And the lack of physical buttons is also a huge drawback.

I wish Apple would fix the algorithm in running and cycling activities, and allow the Digital Crown to be function-programmed.

My sapphire & titanium Garmin Fenix has been bashed off rocks, dropped, thrown, completely abused and apart from some light superficial scratches to the bezel (absolutely nothing on the face), it works exactly as it should.

No Apple watch can compete with that. The fact that they are proud to advertise a soft and bouncy tennis ball hitting the watch as a "hard knock" says it all.

Good and well made ad, though I’m more interested in the last paragraph of the article above.

The rugged casing might be a bit too bulky for some athletes, especially those who run the tracks or do long distance running. Whenever I run, I prefer to not have anything heavy on my wrist and pocket.

I think Apple should market this rugged casing model for those with blue collar jobs, like those who do construction, road work and such. They’re just as exposed or more to extreme environments than an athlete so this would be the perfect watch for that crowd.

Kind of useless thumbnail tbh.

Being an ex pro tennis player - a ball hitting anything at that angle won’t do anything, just bounce off.. maybe a black eye or sore balls if you’re unlucky lol

If a rugged version is coming out in September, what a clever way for Apple to entice someone to buy a 7 now, and then spend MORE money when the MORE rugged version comes out!

Clever Apple ;)

heheh thats cute... a tennis ball hitting the watch, stunt man jumping on a mattress... I'm pretty sure every single watch on the planet could survive that... but for me the main reason I'm not upgrading to apple watch 7 is the lack of space grey / black watch, I don't want a blue watch.
Apple pulled a sneaky last year with no dark grey or silver option at $399…. Gotta spend the big bucks for a professional looking watch 🤦‍♂️ I hate them so much for doing that.

I’m just glad I got the 6 two years ago, in a true dark grey.

Uhhhhh….

Dragging the watch face across concrete while skateboarding?

That’s gonna be a hard pass from me, dawg.

Heh. Typical Apple ads showcasing weird scenarios that does not cover in warranty.
Apple ads are almost always disingenuous and misleading for what they are. Peak advertisement.
For context, my Apple Watch series 4 hit solid concrete a couple times. Does have visible scratches but no obvious crack. Ion-X glass. Does that mean it is as rugged as Apple watch Series 7?

I've been bit by cracking (AW4 dropped on tile while putting it on) and the scratching issue (0,1 and currently have a 5). My 5 is in pretty bad shape now with a couple of deep scratches and a chip out of it. Neither of which I remember happening. It is another reason I'm considering not getting another AW (on top of the horrible battery life I get and Siri just not liking me).

I sometimes hit my watch on door frames, which are metal at the office, and it would easily scratch up my series 4. Series 7? Nope, no scratches.

Although I'm not an Apple Watch fan I do hope they replace the base model glass with the ceramic glass they use on the last couple of gen iPhones. I'm a "naked" iPhone user and from the Mini to the Max I've never had micro scratches from day to day use and personally I haven't had a regular scratch on my display's since the ceramic release. Maybe I'm the exception but that would be a smart move for Apple Watches.

Must say that my Gen 2 has been very robust.

Fallen of a bicycle while wearing it, constantly doing DIY stuff wearing it (wood and metal work) and its still in great nick.

The only mark I have on the screen is from molten solder splatter, and its barely noticable.
