I am slightly confused what my iMac (last 27 inch intel iMac) can do in terms of ai in Final Cut and what not. Not a heavy user. But like having the software.

I don't use any editing software but isn't Final Cut more efficient in a Mac? If you're editing videos, is rendering faster, UI, and the overall experience better than Adobe Premiere?

I don't use Adobe anymore since they made their apps bloated and subscription.
That I do not know. I stopped using Final Cut Pro a few years back (I bought the program years ago) and use Adobe Rush and Premier Pro. I know when both were updated to work with the M1 chip (I use a MacMini) it was blazing fast in terms of 4K video rendering. I know some people swear by Final Cut but I finally got tired of it. I didn't like the controls and that is when I moved to Adobe. I DO NOT like Adobe Rush on the iPhone so I use a different program on the phone for now.

Still no support for captioning/subtitling. 😒

Apple loves to claim to support accessibility, and yet they continue to neglect one of the most widely-used accessibility features — subtitles on video.

Captions / subtitles are absolutely 100% supported. It just doesn't use AI to generate them automatically.

EDIT: Removing snark and adding context...

I was referring to the Mac app, not iPad. I don't/wouldn't edit video on a tablet, so have zero knowledge about that other than the live multicam stuff. Being not wrong about the Mac app, I didn't bother to click your link prior to responding, and didn't parse the link until after I'd posted.

See my project screenshot for one example, and here's the link to the user manual:

They need to come out with a Windows Final Cut Pro.

Apple is stupid for keeping this software Mac Only.

They are missing out on tons of sales and people using the software

The people want software that is cross platform not just Apple Mac.

They made these ads because Blackmagic showed up and ate their lunch.

Couple of weeks ago they updated the Blackmagic Camera App to be compatible with iPad, they also added multi-camera shooting and control. More capable and easier to use than the Final Cut Camera solution, and no need to pay a monthly subscription for Final Cut Pro. Blackmagic Camera App is 100% free as is DaVinci Resolve.

Today they just released Resolve 19 for Desktop and iPad. Standard versions are free. The Studio version of resolve offers a lot more than Final Cut right now for the same base price as FCP. The studio version on iPad is an additional $100 in-app purchase, but it is one-time vs. a monthly subscription.

Final Cut, especially if you include Motion, is still a very strong and powerful app for certain use cases. But Blackmagic is really hitting an amazing stride with their AI/Neural Engine and collaboration features.

I'm also a little surprised they haven't made a companion / suite app that effectively works like OBS. Because OBS on apple silicon sucks a buck.
I am curious in what ways you feel OBS on Apple Silicon doesn't deliver. I don't use it for streaming, but I do use it for recording a lot and use NDI to send specific scenes/comps out to displays/monitors and a teleprompter simultaneously and an M1 Mac mini is able to handle, on it's own, what two 2018 i7 MacBook pros struggled with splitting the same load.

That is assuming Apple actually cares about Final Cut sales. Which they don't. Final Cut has much much more value as a vehicle to sell Mac and iPad and therefore much more money making potential as an exclusive side project. For anyone that needs a cross platform NLE, its much easier for Apple to offer resources and support to Blackmagic and Adobe to make sure their products work as best as possible on Mac than make their own app to support multiple platforms.

Nah.... I doubt you'll ever see that. Apple desperately needs "killer apps" that require a Mac, to keep people from moving to Windows-based machines made by other companies. That's one big reason they paid all the money to buy Logic Pro and discontinue the Windows version it originally had!

Not available on iPad FCP, maybe? I do not have the iPad version but subtitling has been available on the Mac version for a long, long time …

They want to sell computers, not software. The software is subsidized in order to keep selling macs with their juicy ram and ssd bto upgrades.

Apple is not stupid. The entire core is build on Mac The Mac OS, schema, UI and core technologies.

It would be nigh on impossible to port.

A reverse example is 3D studio max, which is utterly dependant on MS DLLs.… and ancient ones at that.

The Problem with developing for windows is you are not developing for a few generations of Mac… but limitless specs and their potential issues With CPUs / GPUs and performance. Never a small issue with something as involved as an editor.

I want to love FCP. But every project goes like this:

Make a quick video using footage from some old dvi tapes, a bad interlaced VHS source, and a VOB file from a DVD, plus some recent interview footage. You have FCP on an iPad.

OR

You have three different sources for the main content, one that's a high quality full original 4:3 image but is B&W. Another high quality & with the original color data preserved but it's a zoomed in 16x9 crop someone did before the original was lost. The third source is full 4:3, has color, but is someones 5th gen low quality edit and in a stupid frame rate. Combine all the data from ea sources into every frame.

So, Final Cut Pro workflow vs Premiere workflow. :(

Sharing some impressions a la FCP for iPad.

Have a new iPP M4. Downloaded FCP for iPad to give it a spin. I am not a video pro, nor was I expecting Final Cut to be a « professional » video editing and Production suite. I think my expectations were reasonably set. Initial poking around with FCP, some things are interesting - the Jog wheel is pretty cool - the ability to use the pencil creatively is also very interesting.

FCP projects developed on the iPad can be imported into FCP for Mac - but unfortunately, not the other way around - this is big miss that hopefully Apple corrects in an update. No stabilization? Nope. A word to the wise - I shot some video with Final Cut Camera on the iPhone and did not realize that the default is with stabilization « off ». So I ended up with some pretty useless shaky video. Was I able to correct it in FCP for iPad - not - see previous comment. There are a number of other things missing or not keeping pace with what « could have been ». Perhaps this will be updated. The M4 by the way is pretty snappy while rendering - no complaints. Glass half full / half empty. Again, for a hobbyist, this is probably ok and I think if you look at the marketing, that’s the target segment. As others have said it’s iMovie on steroids which I suppose is ok for me. YMMV.

No, they did not. These are planned, shot, and in the can months in advance. I have done a few of them with TBWA.

Haven't tried FCP on iPad, and don't really have any interest in doing so. Live multicam capture is pretty interesting though, wouldn't mind seeing that added to the really great multicam editing in the desktop version.

I’ve used FCP on iPad a fair bit and I really like it. Apple have done a great job with the interface, it’s not got all the features of FCP on Mac yet but I’m hoping it’ll continue to grow.

I'm a cheapskate and I read *A LOT* about different software and tried about 8 different video editing programs on both Mac and PC (there is a decent open source one called Olive, and Capcut works well for easy mobile edits) but I gladly ponied up the money for Final Cut Pro when I bought my last macbook. I knew it would be great without ever trying it, because the free iMovie already did so much. I was not disappointed. I love the huge library of music and sound you have access to in your videos, royalty-free.

But most importantly, It Just Works. I can usually figure out how to do things without needing to watch help videos or read online tutorials. Most of the software I tried, it wasn't even clear how to do anything other than open a file without reading a tutorial (I particularly don't care for the user interface of Davinci Resolve).

I tried all the commercial software except Adobe, because I'm not gonna do subscription software. I thought Davinci Resolve was a disaster in terms of usability, clean interface, and ease of use. Cyberlink didn't do anything for me either.

I'm a photographer and most of my video friends use Adobe Premiere (I guess the cost is irrelevant if you are using it every day). Trying to think of something I don't like about FCP and nothing comes to mind...
