Apple today shared a new spatial video that's designed to highlight the Vision Pro headset, demonstrating how the device can be used to make and preserve memories.

For the video, two parents, Sam and Khulan, filmed their newborn son using iPhones that are capable of recording spatial video. Sam then edited the footage into a home video for Khulan to watch on the Apple Vision Pro, and the video shows Khulan's reaction to seeing the montage.

The video has a Mother's Day theme as Mother's Day is this Sunday in the U.S, and it was created by longtime Apple ad agency TBWA/Media Arts Lab.

I was going to be very cynical about this and say how out of touch it is because of the $3500 price tag, but then I actually watched it. It's actually pretty well done and would probably be a cool use case (I've not experienced VP). I did photo/video slideshows for my 3 kids when they turned 1. I and my wife thought they were great, but this would probably be next level.

If I still had a one year old, I'd be falling asleep with that headset on. I'd more enjoy the videos years later, when the kids are teens (the boat I'm in now). That being said, this feels like quite a stretch for a Vision Pro use case, and the commercial bluntly pulls on the heartstrings. But the inherent "one player" context of Vision Pro becomes even more apparent in this use case, since the husband cannot watch the videos with her.

I despise this sort of products so much. Just live in the reality people, be present. There's nothing better than being sober and being present. Live in the moment. You don't need another new iPhone for doomscrolling or youtube binging or arguing with people on reddit, and you don't need headsets such as these.

We need less screens, less screentime, more grass touching 😄

There seems to be for some reason a reflex that a phenomenal device is a bad device because it cost close to $5000.

The truth is if you actually get to use one sometime, it would be kind of like test driving a Cadillac or Mercedes S class. Maybe not in one’s budget today but hopefully someday…

I hope someday it will be easy to edit these type of videos in iMovie. That will get us good consumer acceptance.

Also, Apple is doing a bad job because people are confusing spatial video with immersive video. Both are really nice.

Better ad than I thought it would be.

When people see photos/videos from an event they were at (like a wedding) but they see moments that they didn't catch when they were happening - because of the whirl of excitement on that day - it can honestly be so emotional for them. Watching a video of your child's first year of life must be like that. Nice way to approach a Mother's Day ad.

While I overall agree with the sentiment, the kid in the video is literally touching grass 🤣 The video is just a reminder, after time has passed, of the things that have gone on. A way to see the baby's first year.

Now if we check back in on the mom a year from now and she's ignoring her kid because she has an AVP, that's close to what you're talking about. But I don't think anyone sees that happening.

I take it you never bought a digital camera, a camcorder, or take any pictures on your phone of your family then? 🧐

This video is sweet. It's obviously done for the sake of showing off these products, but it does it in a very human way - showing the new baby growing up in a way that feels more real than scrolling through some photos the parents took randomly over the year.
