It’s so easy to be cynical about all of this. I happened to be one of the people (1 out of 100? ;)) that purchased a Vision Pro because I’ve always enjoyed living on the cusp of exciting tech. Not all of it pans out to be the future and certainly the Vision Pro has its flaws. Many people here have captured them perfectly - the “1 player or isolationism” of using it, not living in the moment, etc, which I 100% agree with.

What I can attest to is how powerful it is at stirring emotions based on things like this. As soon as Apple’s previous beta opened to allow for Spatial recording on iPhone, I began filming every little precious moments I was experiencing - My 3yr old daughters Christmas, hugging Santa Claus, my elderly dog still running when she could, my second daughter being brought home, etc.

When I do have the time to put on the headset (traveling, late at night, etc.) I find myself transported to those times viewing that content. You forget what it was like then, what they sounded like, the things they were saying, the sound of your dog’s bark. Even being able to take a 2D image of a relative long gone and being able to render it in 3D, it’s a profound and deeply emotional feeling of being able to remember. Because there are SO many little things and details you take for granted when you were in that time.

If I still had a one year old, I'd be falling asleep with that headset on. I'd more enjoy the videos years later, when the kids are teens (the boat I'm in now). That being said, this feels like quite a stretch for a Vision Pro use case, and the commercial bluntly pulls on the heartstrings. But the inherent "one player" context of Vision Pro becomes even more apparent in this use case, since the husband cannot watch the videos with her.

That's the beauty of software... it evolves. There's zero technical reason why two, three, 100 people wearing a Vision headset could not watch the same video at the same time. That capability just hasn't been added ... yet. #AirPlay.

Man. Apple is getting desperate with that ad.

I *love* my Vision Pro, but come on, "here's a nearly $4k after tax/accessories awkward, clunky, very obtuse niche v1 product that lays the future out for different form factors to come" for Mother's Day? Oy. Desperate to move the last 250k units they have inventory, so you can make a video at very low/poor resolution with a very narrow field of view that you can't really watch anywhere else right now and maybe not in the future? IDK. Not compelling.

I despise this sort of products so much. Just live in the reality people, be present. There's nothing better than being sober and being present. Live in the moment.
I agree with this to a point. You can’t just live in the moment all the time. Just like you can’t sit on your couch and think about your past all the time either. There are so many lessons and memories from your past that influence you. these are lessons to guide you and memories of people to influence you. There’s also the future that you need to look forward to. If you live in the moment and only for the moment you won’t think about how the things you’re doing now influence your future. The thing that gives you the most satisfaction in the moment could destroy your future.

You don't need another new iPhone for doomscrolling of youtube binging or arguing with people on reddit, and you don't need headsets such as these.

We need less screens, less screentime, more grass touching 😄

I don’t think you realize how ironic this post is. While I agree with the sentiment, you are posting this while looking at a screen. Like everything you do in life excess could be destructive. In moderation, most things are healthy to include screen time.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with recording memories to look back on in the future. I wish I had more of this from my childhood. I would give all the money in my bank to have one of these recordings of me and my dad.

1. I watched it and it looked like a video with blurry edges. I guess I’d need an AVP to ‘experience’ it? 🤷‍♂️
2. I bought a Quest 3 because the AVP is way overpriced. Glad the AVP wasn’t $1000-1500. I would have bought it at that price. But I barely ever use my Quest 3. Not because it isn’t good. I just don’t have the time. AND my kids are in high school. Imagine if I did have an infant.

add a vision pro to the list of expenses modern day parents have...
and we all know how much free time new parents have
That’s sort of the point.

Would it be better to not have this available today? Said another way, you can record spatial video on your iPhone, and view it later — years later — on a VR-type device. In those passing years the availability to relive those moments will increase, while the return on memory will be invaluable.

I disagree with the concept of this, not necessarily what you’re saying. When someone says they don’t have the time to do something that means they have more important or more enjoyable things to do. You have all the time in the world. If the experience was amazing and you enjoyed it that much you would prioritize it over other things that you spend your time on. For instance, posting here. It’s the same when people say I don’t have the money. What they mean is they’d rather spend their money on other things that are more enjoyable to them. Of course that’s the reasonable thing to do.

I don’t have any experience with the Apple Vision Pro but I have tried the quest. It was kind of cool and maybe a little bit disorientating. It wasn’t my device so I only experienced it for maybe 10 minutes. I was impressed but not amazed. I am waiting for the next version of the AVP. I wanted to say I don’t have the money but that’s not exactly true. I just rather spend the money on something else.

The Vision Pro won't exist by the time the kid grows up so what's the point ?
That is a possibility, but I suspect there will be some type of headset to view the video files on.

I suspect the iPhone and Mac won’t be around when a toddler today grows up. That doesn’t mean there won’t be some way to view the pictures you take on the iPhone.

You have to think even old formats like music records still have modern day devices to read them. There’s no guarantee what’s going to happen in the future but I suspect there’s going to be a way.

Interesting and nice ad. But unless Apple is able to get the price of Vision Pro to much lower levels, don't think many will buy it.

Whilst it’s a sweet advert, most people are surely buying flowers or maybe taking their mom out for dinner not spending $4000 on Apple gear 😅

That $4000 would be much better spent on a photography course from all the terrible photos and videos I've seen from parents. And hopefully a new hobby or a bit of respite from being a mother.

wonderful story.

i hadn't noticed the title and just pressed the start link, thinking that maybe he got his wife AirPods with noise cancellation. lol.

while watching it, the music and the atmosphere of the filming made me think that something dreadful was coming up in the story. im glad there was nothing like that.
then i think about how as a father he was being a videographer during those moments.
all dads take way too many photos of their newborns. thousands and thousands of photos. thinking that each and every shot contains something new something precious.

i think this format - totally immersive and impossible to reproduce it enough to do justice to it on our flat macbooks/iPads - its next level, and in the coming years this spatial document will prove to be well worth it to those parents who use this format.

I probably don't use it correctly but my spacial recordings never ever "pop" like the sample videos provided by Apple like I can hardly tell the difference to a normal video
Are you watching them on a Vision Pro? If not, they can’t ‘pop’. I’ve started recording some spatial videos in the hope that I’ll be able to watch them on some future spatial device (Vision Pro or similar).

Would it be outta touch if I made the exact same kind of video but with my OnlyFans girlfriend?

I want an Apple Vision Pro but not for this.

It’s a cute ad!

With all the negativity out there, people are so negative. Politics and everything else gets everybody angry. Learn to be happy!
What you should be angry is about is Apple preying on consumers emotions with a video like this. It's a clear manipulation to sell you something. He says, "This is just a little tiny gift for her" minimizing the insane cost of this thing for a ridiculous use case, especially for new parents.

The commercials narrative is that if you love your wife and baby, you'll buy them this. New low for Apple marketing.

I was going to be very cynical about this and say how out of touch it is because of the $3500 price tag, but then I actually watched it. It's actually pretty well done and would probably be a cool use case (I've not experienced VP). I did photo/video slideshows for my 3 kids when they turned 1. I and my wife thought they were great, but this would probably be next level.
We all know these promo videos are made out of concepts that dont actually exist or are possible.

You do understand the purpose of an advertisement, right? It’s to play on some emotion to convince you to buy the product. I would have to hate every company that has an advertisement if I thought like you.

I can use the same criticism with the think different ads. Unless you just want to be like everyone else you need to go out and spend money at the Apple Store.

The advertisement is just to give you an idea. You should have enough smarts to figure out if the item is right for you. It’s kind of like when you see the jewelry advertisement for Valentine’s Day for gold but you know your wife does not like jewelry. While I think this ad is cute, I’m not going to buy my mother in Apple Vision Pro. That thing would sit in her closet because she would not put it on. If she would wear it, I would absolutely get it for her.

As to the cost, that is all relative. It might be insanely expensive for you but for someone else just pocket change. I know someone that buys his wife a $75k car every two years. I feel that’s a bit insane, but he has the money so it’s nothing for him.
