Well, I got one. I checked the offerings and there was nothing there that I would watch. I promptly deleted the add.

I thought the choices would be much more varied. There were 59 rentals. Some shows I never heard about, some I already get with Hulu Plus. I hope these are just the first few offerings and better shows will follow.

I have two Apple TV2s, and I love the Netflix connection. But the 24-hour limit on Apple movie rentals is a deal killer for me—free or otherwise.

I haven't received one of those emails, then again, I used to rent and buy movies through Apple TV at a pace that I'd spend maybe $600 a year on such content. It would be nice to get a freebie as a "thanks", but maybe Apple figures they wouldn't make money on introducing me to rentals.

Got mine...

I have an original ATv, an iPad, and iPhone. Don't buy much through iTunes except for apps. Guess I'm lucky.

Want to PM me the code? :)

I just unsubscribed from their emails yesterday so I guess I won't be getting one.

Free is good. But the current renting prices are just ok.

I like the Netflix method of renting tons of movies for a flat monthly rate. Apple compares better with Hotel room movies and Blockbuster outlets.

I like the netflix idea too and just signed up since they have a $7.99 streaming only option.

But the movie selection is kind of crap if you ask me. And many movies are disc-only, meaning I have to upgrade and have a disc mailed to me and mail it back when I'm done watching.

The TV selection is pretty good, but it's kind of a teaser. They have Season 1 of Dexter for example...so you get hooked then have to go rent DISCS for the subsequent seasons.

Meh, the system just isn't quite there yet.

my two cents to mr apple.

i've gotten burned many times by only having 24 hours to watch; 26 or 28 hours would be great.

family scenario: Kids start watching at 7pm on Friday, they get about half way through and we promise they can watch rest on Saturday. We *have* to start at 6, or something like that, because some other services literally shut the feed off at exactly 7pm the next day. To finish, I have to re-order!

I don't know if apple lets you keep watching remaininder if we were to restart before 7pm on the Saturday, but it really sours the whole experience to have to worry about how the 24 hours is applied. It's made me stop renting online.

Apple could really have an advantage for me by having 28 hours wathcing period - allowing a family with small kids watch movie in two parts over two days without needing to plan it out - believe me, I have enough to worry about in the course of a day.

Those who see this as a minor quibble either don't have kids, or manage to lead a much more organized life than I! :)

I get emails from apple all the time about new products and such, but no free code for me.

I have 2 new apple tv's and an old one as well and buy stuff from apple all the time music/videos/tv shows/movies,and rent movies sometimes too. maybe since i'm already spending money, i'm not included.

so since I actually do rent HD movies on a regular basis from Apple TV, I guess I wouldn't be a prime target for this offer.

Yeah, it takes a lot of effort to do that. I usually have to wait an entire DAY before my movie shows up. And walking all the way to the mailbox makes my legs tired.

And because I can keep the DVD as long as I want it might take me a few days to get through a long movie (you know, if I'm busy or have to deal with the family or whatever - things come up).

Fix the limited selection problem

They may have 8500 movies, but they seem to never have the one movie I want - or they have it, but only for sale.

I can't count the number of times that friends have told me about a great movie, and I have gone to iTunes to rent it - only to find out that it is not available, or that I have to pay $12 or whatever to purchase it. I can see that that would often be the case with new releases, but this happens with older movies as well. Now that all the Blockbuster stores are closing, I'd have to resort to Netflix - or maybe bit torrent.

Case and point: Try to rent Toy Story or Toy Story 2 and see what you get.

Well I own 3 Phones, 2 Imac's, a Apple Tv and a Ipad and got nothing. I guess the thousands I have spent must mean they think I don't deserve or I can afford the movie on my own.

I can go onto Netflix right now and add either of those to my queue and likely get it tomorrow - Thursday at the latest.

I don't know how most people watch movies, but I don't just spontaneously decide to watch a movie on a given day. Usually I plan ahead to an evening where I know I won't have much going on. This makes the Netflix model perfect for me. Maybe I'm abnormal.

The 24/hour limit was annoying to me at first, but I haven't really had a problem with it in regards to AppleTV use. I rent the movie when I'm ready to watch it.

It is a problem if I rent something for my iPhone to take on a plane, and I don't finish the movie on the plane (or that same day); I'd have to rent it again to watch the rest on the return flight.

You do get 30 days to watch it once you've rented it...but only 24 hours to finish once you click Play.

I've also noticed that movies I've seen for rent in the past, become unavailable for rent, and are only for sale. It seems when they hit a $9.99 sale price, they're no longer for rent.

The content owners ultimately own the content and are limiting what is available and when and they are big fans of selling discs.

It's easy to get used to the instant gratification of on-demand. Recently I wanted to rent "Bad Santa" over Thanksgiving weekend. I checked AppleTV - not for rent or for sale. Checked Netflix - not there either. Checked RedBox (since I can access those 24/hours) and also not there. I could get from Netflix on Tuesday of the following week at best?! It's a pretty old movie now...seemed odd to me.

Good to know that. I had Netflix about 6 months ago and the selection was low. I had noticed that a movie I recently rented on iTunes was on the front of a Netflix Ad for the service and it made me want Netflix again. Maybe it would cut down on what I spend on iTunes. I feel embarrassed how much I buy on iTunes.

I too am embarrassed about how much I spend on iTunes. Maybe that is why they sent me a free rental? One on the house to show their appreciation?

I just watched season 2 of Dexter on Netflix two weeks ago, are you sure you searched? ;)

I too had Netflix about a year ago. I just used the free two week trial and canceled the next day. The selection was pathetic. Nowadays the selection is much better :)
