Mine are going back, although I haven’t noticed any power drain and they’re still on the original charge, after 3-4 hours these hurt my head around my ears - they’re just too heavy to be comfortable long term

A shame, because I’ve wanted these for ages, but i’m going back to my airpod pros for now

Still not having a power button is pretty silly, and be forced to use this "case" in order to save battery life.
The “having to use the case” is actually something interesting. I find myself WANTING to put them in the case... for protection. The build quality and feeling is so slick that I don’t want any scratch happening to them.
And for example, how many times have you saved a gadget “by the wire”? this time there’s no wire to catch it from.

I bought the a couple of days ago and haven’t charged them once, just at it came from the store box. For those interested, the “check availability” option online can change at any time... I vulture-d around hourly until they appeared and got them in whim.

I had some issues regarding fatigue and comfort on the first two hours... I was using the shortest fit possible and suddenly after chewing gum for some time it became quite muscle painful on the face sides close to the earlobes. As if those muscles were holding a chunk of the weight too.

There’s a proper headband fit that works for me... sad to hear because after a couple of days, going back and forth between AirPods Pro and Max, holy crap, I’m no audiophile but the sound stage (for lack of a better term), the noise cancelling and all the usual amenities like auto switch, lighting fast and easy dumb first time setup and pairing (just tapping on “connect” the first time), etc etc is mind blowing.

As someone who frequently travels for business during non-pandemic times, storage efficiency isn't as important as storage function.

for you. In my travel bag space and weight is always at a premium and I am always on the lookout for ways to pack more efficiently. In fact I stopped carrying my Sony’s specifically because I didn’t think the bulk justified itself for the advantages over the airpods Pro Except for some overnight transpacific flights. Was never comfortable falling asleep in my AirPods. Function does not have to be sacrificed for efficiency... GaN chargers for example. I do predict a robust third party market for sleeves to go around and protect the top mesh.

Apple didn't make these for people travelling frequently, obviously. That said, some third-party will make a decent case like Bose has for these.

Mesh should have been leather. That grocery store onion bag of a net should have been solid as it will tear. Lightening cable should have been USB-c. It needed a real case that you can use when throwing it in a bag. it should be foldable so that it doesn't take up the entire bag. It needs to be under 280 grams to be usable for longer. The stainless steel being rubber will be damaged in a month.

Rubber... mesh... leather... stainless steel...

funny thing is you need that case to make the most of the battery life so users have little choice.

Do you have a pair?

i have been testing the battery drain without the case, and the AirPods Max definitely go into a sleep mode, without the case.

marquis wnd many other reviewers somehow got this wrong.

test it out yourself!
I was going off what Marquis said, but glad to hear the sleep mode works well! Thanks for letting us know! Also glad that Apple has weighed in and given an official response to clarify!

Good grief. If they tried hundreds of designs and the best they came up was something that looks like a bra, I‘m not sure I want to see the others...

Case is garbage and 3.5mm adapter should be included at $550. And these SHOULD be like $399 IMO.
They should be $349.

But no, they should not include 3.5 mm adapter. That has nothing to do with price point. It has to do with what these are for, and they're not for plugging in to legacy equipment.

Despite what Apple wants to happen there will always be a use case for wires.

I’m sure in La La Land we can go 100% wireless everything but it just isn’t going to happen for any professional use cases

Next Apple event: New AirPods Max Storage Case MAX. $199.
Apple next September: « You’ve asked for it, and we listened. This year we‘ve developed a Magic Case Max, made from recycled aluminium unibody alloy with MagSafe wireless charging capacity for just €399. It’s magical. »

Exactly the same! They sound amazing, are build incredibly well, look great, etc - but the comfort just isn’t there... I got the exact same pain

I think you're right. That smart case isn't practical. It looks too much like a handbag to be carried openly and even if it was it would such an obvious item for a pick pocket. Also, carrying it by the "handle" is just carrying it by the headband, which as mesh would be prone to wearing down. Just "throwing it in the back pack" could see some pen or other sharp object tearing a hole in the headband/handle. I think Apple are looking at the after market for lucrative case solutions. Any company the designs a case for these headphones will need to incorporate whatever technology Apple has embedded in the Smart Case for that case to work, so they will have to license the tech from Apple. AND find my iphone to protect the headphones if stolen. And could there be Supreme earpads on the way?

That pen is already damaging stuff in their backpack BEFORE they put these headphones in. If someone’s good with a pen or other sharp object bouncing around scratching and ripping all their other stuff, that’s just what they consider acceptable damage.

That’s why Apple sells an optional audio cable for it.

That pretty much tells you how Apple sees people using it. They expect most customers to be listening to music and watching movies with it.

At the same time, Apple also acknowledges that some people may have professional workflows that require the AirPods max to be used in wired form (maybe when editing podcasts?), but these will more the exception than the norm, and they can’t justify bundling a cable, much less including an additional audio jack just to accommodate this.

I think the argument is Apple no longer provides any pack ins. Macbook, charger, no remote or dongles. Phones/iPads, no headphones or chargers. $550 headphones with a cheap case and no $20 3.5 adapter.

Yet prices go up. It’s BS.

The digital crown and the transparency option are already two buttons, one of them also a knob. I tinker enough already with them and sometimes press the transparency/anc one instead of the crown. A third button for power off just opens to more confusion and introduce accidental turn offs...

I think I’m in the large minority here, understandably so: using them for the last 5 days, they have incredibly grown on me. Best headphones I have ever had (not an audiophile myself though). I’m perfectly ok with them not having a power off button, just like the phone, iPad, AppleTV, airpods/pro, etc don’t have a power off button. They are always ready to be awaken (instantly) and used. Want to turn them off? Do the gymnastics button combination, also like with all the gadgets mentioned above.
