Except you don't lose 10%

Based on my testing, assuming no case the AirPods Max drain 1.5% battery per hour, for the first two hours then they go to sleep (i.e. power off) state, and don't drain any more than lithium-ion headphones that are technically off.

So 3%, worst case scenario.
And if they just went to sleep and you happen to have to use them for another 5 minutes before putting them away again there goes 6% of your battery.

Spatial Audio is 2 things, dynamic head tracking and surround sound. Apple describes it as "dynamic head tracking bringing theater-like sound that surrounds you from the movie or video you're watching."

Spatial Audio supports Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus (EAC-3), and Dolby Atmos (MAT).
Yes, I know.

I’m saying I don’t know whether you can. Have surround without spatial audio turned on (i.e the head tracking)

The design does look interesting. It's almost retro. The case is the drawback, to me (aside from price) to buy them.

When I would start traveling with them, I'd be looking for a good case for them to protect them when not being used.

Anyone know of any options? Anything that would work, and not be too cumbersome?
1 gallon ziploc freezer bag.

Really grasping at straws here. Fortunately, they're easy to plug into any old Lightning cable you've had laying around for the past 10 years.

I’m gonna guess that there will be a Pelican (or Pelican-like) case precisely sized for these pretty soon.

I don't doubt it. If people really wanted to they could get one now with some pluck foam. I've just never had a decent set of headphones that didn't come a case. Apple should have charged $50 more and included a better case.

Really grasping at straws here, and no that's not how the math/battery would work. Fortunately, they're easy to plug into any old Lightning cable you've had laying around for the past 10 years.
Maybe not. I have a usb-a - lightning cable that my wife uses to charge her iphone. Didn’t work with my airpods max. I suspect that that the wattage was too low, but I didn’t do any further investigation.

It’s actually a very nice product, as evidenced by almost every review, including from many audiophiles. One thing everyone agrees on is that they are very comfortable, especially the mesh headband, which you don’t feel at all. And I can confirm that this is the case. You don’t feel the head band, let alone the “2 hard bands.” The power button is a non-issue - take the phone out of the case, leave it on your desk, and after 24 hours you lose 2% of battery. So what?

As for “too heavy“- I haven’t seen people say that. I’ve seen them say they are heavy, but not “too heavy.” They are certainly heavier than, say, Beats or other lower end cans. But they don’t weigh more than many high end headphones, like master & dynamic, sennheiser, Hifiman, meze, etc. I agree, these are not good for workouts or the like, but that’s not the goal of these headphones.

Gruber did. They sounds too heavy for me to want to try as I do move during my waking hours.
Heavy is the Head That Wears the AirPod

The AirPods Max headband does seem to distribute the weight as comfortably as it can, but the weight is all in the ear cups, and heavy ear cups are, well, heavy. When you remain motionless, you can forget they’re there. But when you move around, the AirPods Max have inertia. They move a bit when you shake your head side-to-side, and they move a lot when you nod your head up and down. Look down at your feet and look back up and you’re instantly reminded, Oh yeah, I’ve got heavy cans on my ears. You feel a bit bobble-headed with them on. The heaviness of the AirPods Max doesn’t make them uncomfortable, per se, but it definitely feels like they’re intended for stationary use.

That's someone who's never tried to pull a pair out of a packed daypack with a bunch of junk and cables in it. The full case keeps things from getting tangled in it. Yet again an 'inside the bubble' view.

How many units of the AirPods Max did they produce? Without this denominator we've no way to interpret what sold-out means.

Every single time an apple product sells out, people who don’t like the product (because they can’t afford it, usually) claim “they didn’t MAKE any! That’s why it sold out!”

Then the quarterly numbers come out, and every single time we find out they were wrong.

So good luck with that. I’m sure this time you’ll be right.

I don’t think that’s what “literally” means.

Apple has sold a ****-ton of these AirPod max’s. The reason they sold out is that, despite having made a lot of them, particularly in gray and silver, demand is much higher than they expected.

Go chill man.

If this is the future of Apple design they’re in trouble lol. The case is one of the most laughably designed cases ever.

Isn't it amazing how a beautiful and premium product like this can be completely undermined by an underwhelming accessory like the "bra" case? While I appreciate their move toward minimalism, this is a useless accessory that will likely get lost, forgotten, and left behind. And the fact that the headphones cannot be turned off without it? That's a mind-numbingly stupid design decision.

I'm also not a fan of the mesh ear cushions and headband, unless they are washable. Oils, dirt, and hair product are going to make a mess of those in no time. There's a reason most headphone manufacturers use synthetic leather. It's durable, you can wipe it clean, and it doesn't show oils, dirt, or stains.

Lol which "low end cans" are you referring to. Apple is directly competing with Sony and Bose on these which both weigh considerable less. If you want to call Beats low end cans, that's fine, because they are for the most part garbage. Sony and Bose have consistently put out some of the best ANC headphones on the market. And I'm not sure which of the other high end headphones you listed weigh more than the AirPods Pro Max. They are without a doubt VERY heavy and many including myself have reported them to be uncomfortable after a few hours wear.
