As stated in the article:
Next-generation CarPlay will be highly customizable, allowing automakers to tailor the design of the system to uniquely match their vehicles. Apple revealed a variety of different design options and layouts that will be possible, as shown below.
But I agree with many commenters that these look horrible. It's understandable to show the variety and customisability of your car OS with these, demonstrating mainly the different options and features available for the car makers.

However, it would be beneficial to also create one high-quality demo design along that highlights how much polished the UI and UX can be with such a customisable underlying OS.

Otherwise some low-volume manufactures take inspiration or use these directly and some high-volume won't use all that new OS offers. Apple can do great UI/UX, car makers often don't, especially the UX part. Let's show them an already great baseline.

I'm leaving the whole will some car manufacturer use CarPlay OS instead of theirs, the data access etc. aside. But if similar mockups will be the only thing that seeps through reports to some traditional car maker CEO/infotainment design manager, I don't blame them for quick-thinking "we got it better now with ours".

I take it that they are going to cannibalize all the software from the failed Apple Car into updates now.

Apple hasn't exactly built a reputation of being the nicest company to work with.

They would have to offer something with complete customization to the point you don't even know they are there and a very loose license. Not really their bread and butter.

Why do you prefer Apple has your info? Audi would still have this data, but you are now sharing it with two companies. Ultimately, Audi is the better choice as they are the ones developing your car. Not Apple.
Apple has less of an interest in doing things like selling my data to my insurance company, advertisers, and data mining companies for fun and profit like GM has done to folks for one thing

Also I can pull the appropriate fuse in most cars and disable the always on connection to the manufacturer and not share with them at all (GM excepted)

I just want to know what the plain Jane run of the mill carplay will look and function like. I'm getting a 2024 Santa Fe soon, it would be fun it carplay would run across the whole dash but I don't think its going to play out that way.

If cars use displays such as those proposed, hopefully when they break they can be replaced for less than $15,000. Anyway, I am still trying to figure out what happened to the old saying "keep your eyes on the road." What problem is this truing to solve - how to get cash out of consumer's pockets selling show-off glitz?

I would like it if CarPlay would let us hide the icon labels like iOS is about to let us do.

All I really want is to be able to control the car radio from within CarPlay.

To the person showing the Huawei screenshots...

Now could you please explain what in your mind is differentiating this (same old) UI from all the other same old UIs that cars commonly use?

BTW: I'm Club Analog when it comes to wipers, cabin temperature and some other functions. Drove a Tesla this weekend. Opening the laughable glove department via software is just one more thing that cries out overengineering.

Now I understand that they’ve skipped project Titan. No carmaker will implement this from Apple for several reasons:

1. Most EV-makers have better integrated solutions where they’ve total control over
2. They’ve to pay Apple a fee for implementing it
3. If Apple decides to stop the project it’s hard to have a backup plan
4. Apple is very slow with updates/newer versions

These mocks already look outdated.. they really should focus on making one experience for one layout (their own car’s OS) prefect.

There are way too many ideas/components in the mocks, and they are not thought out nor refined.

Also, there is 0 chance for carplay to replace native car OS. There’s way too much data auto manufacturers won’t be giving to them.

Just watched the actual talk. I appreciate the thought, but I honestly don’t think that’s enough. The new EV’s UI are crazy, and those need to be designed with hardwares in mind. Carplay is too generic for a car OS.

Carplay 2 is still trying to replace the current UI, rather than true innovation. I feel like it's going to be the next Home App/HomeKit, which just doesn't work

I mean.. compare to this, good luck Apple:

All of these look cool as ****, but they're a huge distraction. All the pretty colors and animations, plus the inconsistent UIs through the menu could cause a driver to distract themselves enough to crash. That's why most big manufacturers and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto use pretty much only lists, so easy muscle memory can be formed.

If the car maker supplies the data in the CarPlay API, then I’m sure you could get it. CarPlay depends on manufacturers to connect the data feeds for temperature, battery charge, etc.
I think they were referring to the weather outside, not the car’s climate. Which yeah I still can’t believe the weather app was not in CarPlay since day 1.

Car manufacturers adopted CarPlay for the same reason Apple just adopted ChatGPT. They needed something until they could get their act together. Apple needs to move any innovation from CarPlay2 (and I am not sure there is any) into CarPlay1, kill CarPlay2 and then make sure to own the aftermarket audio market.

For the nee EVs you don’t really need to use screen while driving. Usually it’s voice+gestures and they are really convenient. The screens can be expressive so they can do a lot more for the passengers and for the drivers when the car is parked.

I don’t expect the carplay to support full featured apps in a loooong time. But it’s becoming essential for passengers

The car needs to display critical information to the driver without the use of an iPhone. If you lose your phone, or it breaks, or the WiFi connection drops, you can’t render the car undrivable. Vehicle speed, battery charge status, heater controls… I need them to work independently of the telephone. It’s not clear to me how this CarPlay system enables that.

I get that car makers can develop widgets which display control and telemetry data through CarPlay when it’s available, and personally, I think there’s a LOT of upside in letting vehicle owners personalize their car interior display. People love to customize their cars; no question. I can see how the system would display vehicle controls and data without CarPlay, and then use CarPlay widgets for vehicle specific controls and data when CarPlay is active, and the user can select size and appearance and location. That definitely seems like a winning solution to me.

My view is that it is impossible for a car manufacturer to develop a better solution than CarPlay, because CarPlay is always current, and the built-in functionality is going to be two years out of date by the time the car starts production, and ten years into the car’s life, it’s really going to be dated.

I don’t want an Aston Martin nor a Porsche. Where are the real car mfrs considering this?
Most already moved to Android Automotive OS (not Android Auto). Ford, Chevy/GMC, Honda, a bunch of Volvo models and more. Even this new version of Cary Play will sit on top of Android Automotive OS in most cases.
