I'm a huge fan of CarPlay, but at this point these features seem like wishes more than anything else. It's been years since dual-screen support was announced, and how many cars have shipped with support for that? Polestar and maybe Volvo iirc?

Until Apple builds a deep enough partnership with an auto manufacturer, it doesn't feel like the bulk of these features will ever see the light of day.

Why do you prefer Apple has your info? Audi would still have this data, but you are now sharing it with two companies. Ultimately, Audi is the better choice as they are the ones developing your car. Not Apple.
Probably because the data is already on your phone. There is not need to separately share it with Audi.

I rented a new BMW, and it has two screen CarPlay, which displays the map above the Speedo even when other things were displayed on the main display.

Come on Tesla, give this to us.
Why? Tesla’s offerings are so much better already and are deeply integrated and tested. Other than that is that Tesla is focusing on making this better all the time while for Apple it’s a “hobby” they’ve already lost. Same with tv’s. Most manufacturers use Android as the underlying technology. Apple had a change with project Titan, pouring billions Apple tax in it (you an I pay for) and failed miserably. They better focus on staying the best and pouring that money into iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, etc. Too bad it’s ridden with bugs and it’s not giving you some kind of roadmap. Same with their hardware.

You make great points here and, for the most part, I agree. Tesla has the best UI in any car I’ve seen.

That said, I want to be able to choose nav service. Waze in particular. Car play is an easy fix for this, so is an App Store for Tesla.

I’ve read that Tesla will be introducing an AppStore soon. I think your wishes come true in the foreseeable future 😊

Since Telsa is allowing China owners to use Baidu Maps with "FSDS" it would stand to reason they may have a way to allow alternative mapping services. Though I'm still not sure how these advanced ADAS systems would interface with CP2.

I don’t get CarPlay 2. It really only makes sense as a licensed OS or hardware module manufacturers buy to avoid having to build and maintain the software car systems. Similar to Android Automotive OS used in newer Volvos and others.

I don’t think I want something that completely changes my cockpit. I want CarPlay, the little window into my phone that helps me avoid being a distracted driver. I just don’t get CarPlay 2.

It is supposed to allow you to stay in the CP world by getting information from your vehicle and showing it in CP.

I just want to know if my 2023 Tundra will get an update for the additional features.

It's a bit weird trying to figure out why Apple thought any manufacturer would want to use this.

i don’t really care how good Tesla’s software is or isn’t. There are things on my phone that I want integrated with my car that Tesla will never provide. An example is my set of podcast subscriptions. I listen to a lot of podcasts. They are all stored on my phone. I use Overcast as my podcast manager and player. It keeps track of what I’ve listened too and where I am in each episode. I regularly listen to a podcast on my phone at home and then get in the car and pickup where I was using CarPlay. Bluetooth can sort of work but it is a major downgrade in the controls and I don’t want to have to interact with my phone while in the car.

There are other similar reasons why I want to bring my phone into the car.

In a Tesla I would likely use their maps for any road trips and might need charging but would probably use Apple Maps for daily driving where I’m only interested in traffic congestion and accidents.

It’s about options and personalization. I want both and don’t seen any reason why the vehicle maker can’t allow for that. Are they afraid of competition?

It appears to take development resources to integrate CarPlay 2 (and maybe 1) into cars and the makers are deciding that the time could be better spent on their own interface instead?

I suppose I just rather have my Audi's digital cockpit gauge cluster with CarPlay in the center display. Perhaps the interface - physical and software - in some cars could be improved by Apple's CarPlay 2 but I feel no such itch. Similarly, my wife and I are very happy with the physical controls and software experience in the new Honda Pilot.

Additionally, I've been window shopping a BMW 5 series lately and all the bad things I could say about their technology forward approach could not be improved by CarPlay 2. And the new 5 series has all the existing Apple car related integrations I'd want like car key in the wallet and Apple Maps navigation in the digital gauge cluster.

I'd love to see 3rd party options for this.

I will happily replace the awful analog speedometer in my car with a new screen. I'd love to never see another analog gauge in my life.

(And I'd do it on my bike too. I'm so sick of hard to quickly read analog gauges.)

I want an Aston Martin. Or a Porsche (if it's a Panamera. The rest are too hard for me to get in and out of). If you don't, you've never driven one!
Meh.

I want my car to be comfortable and reasonably fast. The comfort part is much more important to me than the go fast part, as long as the 0-60 is under 8 seconds I'm fine with it. Sure, faster is nicer, but I don't want to give up the comfort part.

If I want "go really fast" I'll take my bike.

Yea, I don’t need CarPlay 2-level integration. The current integration is fine. That is all driven by Apple’s own needs.

One under discussed complication with CarPlay 2 is how it confuses core functionality access. For example, let’s say your partner daily drives a car with CarPlay 2 support that they do not use. When you drive their car but they are a passenger and you opt into CarPlay 2 then all the sudden the cognitive load of function discovery has greatly increased for your partner. Climate controls, audio controls, etc all change. Sure they will learn the controls over time but it will always have some friction when you drive. Additionally, if the user customization is significant then this same functionality friction could exist in vehicles where each driver opts in to CarPlay 2.

That’s just a mess. I’d rather have the manufacturer’s core UX with a window for CarPlay 1 when I need to interface with my phone safely while driving.

I feel the same way, but Astons and Porsches are out of my range. However, Volvo sold me an S60 Recharge with 455 HP, and 0-60 in 4.3. And you'll never find a more comfortable ride than the Volvo. All the tech, all the luxury, all the performance at a fraction of the Germans & Brits.
8 seconds is Volkswagen Beetle territory! :D🤣 I do have a couple fast bikes (the 2 legpower variety).
