Really??

You get Lens Flare and Chromatic Aberrations when you point your camera at the sun??

DUH!!!

This happens with ANY camera!! I have made my living behind the lens for the past 27 years and this happens with every lens!!

Y

I agreed. I've been shoot for 30+ years and that why most smart photographer don't shoot into the sun.
Some people are just so un-inform.

So many people who don't know what they are talking about and a couple that do.

The purple is called a "chromatic" aberration". I have a 1000 dollar lens that I have to use properly, or correct afterwards, to avoid that fringing of purple. All lenses must deal with the issue with wide angle lenses being affected more.... small cameras like the iPhone use extremely wide angle cameras.

I know everyone expects the devices they buy from Apple to be made of magic and to defy the rules physics, but they simply can't do that.

Most sources and forum threads that covered the issue demonstrated far more significant differences; methinks MacRumors is trying to add pro-Apple spin, surprise surprise.

That said, is the issue blown out of proportion? Sure. But the "you're holding it wrong" response is still disappointing. I had hoped that kind of cavalier attitude towards design flaws, however minor, would have been beaten out of them after the Antennagate incident. Alas, it seems that is not the case.

just gotta sit back and let the drama unfold and thank yourself you didn't early adopt (or maybe you did...sucks for you)

Is it chromatic abberation?

No, definitely not. Typically visible towards the edges of the frame especially in images taken using wideangle lenses, CA takes the appearance of a green-and-magenta or blue-and-yellow 'fringing' around peripheral scene elements. It looks nothing like the iPhone 5's purple haze.

my 4S does not do this...i cannot speak for anyone else or of that picture at the beginning of the thread. the real cause will be known within a month or two, that's my guess. it didn't take long for antenna-gate to unfold.

i'm curious as to what a special apology conference will be like with Tim Cook...he's already rather mellow when he's announcing a new product, i can only imagine what he's like while apologizing and trying to downplay on stage

Oh gee... i took my phone back and swapped it again for no reason. On my 4th phone already.

(just a freakin joke folks....)

This is from a $2000 dollar lens - http://toothwalker.org/optics/chromatic/img_3682.jpg

And it is much larger than the millimeters thick entire camera they are fitting into the iPhone 5. Just how it is. Don't take pictures of the Sun. you can't do it with a $5000 camera, let alone a little phone

"You're shooting it wrong!!" :apple:<3
Correct. Photography isn't making toast, there are limitations and you have to follow some rules to get good results.

"When it's completely dark my photos don't come out, WTF APPLE!?"

I am no fanboy, but I am a hobby photographer. I had to create an account just to combat the ignorance.

Now after this memo, I see a bunch of squinting idiots trying to take pictures of the effing sun to see I they have this problem...

Lens flaring and point of light aberrations: they are even simulated on freaking video games for Spaghetti Monter's sake!!!

Really soon we will have to accept an environmental liability release before we use Apple products

"Product may not perform as intended in real world environmental conditions"

Examples:

1) iPhone 5 camera purple flare in sunlight
2) iPad 3 wifi issues in your house
3) iPhone 4 signal issues if held in your other hand
4) iPhone 4S battery issues if Location service is turned on
5) iPhone 5 anodized aluminum defects if new retail box is opened outside of an Apple Store
6) iPad 3 retina screen pink and yellow tint issues when not used at the genius bar (wise crack at the fact that the genius bar never ever admits to seeing a defect...they always just claim to replace it out of good faith to the customer)
7) iPad 3 heat issues if used to play app games shown at the product unveiling

i just have to sit back and laugh sometimes

Exactly! My Panasonic LX5 has a similar problem every time you point it at something bright and you don't get a nice natural flare, you get purple vertical lines across the whole image. This is semi-pro camera we are talking about.

It's ridiculous how the same people who say doesn't acknowledge Apple's innovations can somehow attribute all problems to them and make it seem like they are the first to have these problems.

"Glass cracks!" "Aluminum dents!" "Lens flares when pointing at bright source of light!" "Signals attenuate when covering antennas!" "Apple uses Chinese factories!"

Listen up!

This is not chromatic aberration, and it is not caused by the sapphire cover glass.

It's lens flare, which is inherent to virtually any lens system. It's the reason why people use lens hoods on their SLRs. If Apple had the luxury of including a lens hood on the iPhone 5, lens flares could be reduced. But we don't want giant lens hoods on our iPhones, do we?

Please go listen to the latest Anandtech podcast. Anandtech senior smartphone editor Brian Klug, an optical engineer and overall smart guy, gives a good explanation of this situation.

Every lens ever made has it's own unique way of displaying lens flare. These reports on every tiny little facet of iphone are rather silly. Not only that but lens flare is a part of the armoury of special effects used in still and movie photography to give precisely the effect of pointing a lens at a bright light source.

It should also be pointed out that the human eye also has lens flare when pointed at a bright light source. So who are you going to complain to?

I think its astounding that people are taking bad photos and blaming it on Apple.

Lens flare happens with every camera in the world. It is intrinsic to the physics of glass and light. It is intrinsic to photography.

People getting upset about this--like those idiots complaining about Apple maps-- just show me that people really *are* getting stupider as time goes on.

Bravo econgeek...I can't believe what people complain about. Maps are WAY better than Google Maps. Photos are 100x better than my canon point and shoot and you can edit them on the phone.

I'm sure there will be other things to complain about coming soon.

Why don't you suck a big bag of French baguettes?

If only Apple would now acknowledge and address the horrible iPhone 5 battery life issue!

Battery life on my iPhone 5 is straight up phenomenal.
Today: wifi, LTE, and Bluetooth on all day, including BlueTooth streaming iTunes Match music over LTE to my car stereo:
5 hours 58 minutes usage
13 hours 10 minutes standby
46% charge remaining.

In other news....

...if you take a picture with the iPhone 5 in the dark without a flash, you will get a dark picture.

I was one of the ones saying maps isn't so bad, then I tried finding a Walmart nearby when traveling. Called it to confirm they were 24 hrs, then navigated there. Woods and train tracks. I called again and they were 15 miles away! Searched for a gas station, called them, they were 5 miles away. 2 nearby stations had the same number listed In Apple maps. Tried to find a pilot travel center, no reults, then I drive by one. google maps was correct in all counts. Now I double check with google, if not go there first. Apple maps have failed more often than not when I'm traveling trying to find businesses. I'm sure they will get better, google has failed me before too, but it is bad for now.
