I'm seriously tired of seeing this issue appear in almost every one of my Google Reader tech feeds. Ho-hum. Apple's response seemed straightforward and reasonable. I'm sure if Google modifies the application, it will eventually be accepted. I really can't see why the FCC is involved. What a big fat waste of time for all involved.

+1

Best line of this is the title. "The Michael Jackson of Apple News sites." HA! So true! Good thing Apple didn't just pull matte screens and firewire, otherwise we'd be INUNDATED with worthless complaining.

seems to me, fwiw

Apple doesn't want the iphone to be a wifi phone because it could screw up their distro partnership w/AT&T. They should just be honest about that and say it and let the court decide.

Your comment makes no sense. It has nothing to do with Google Voice or the current discussion.

I had no idea that Google's did so much and tried so hard to redefine the core components of Apple's iPhone with phone dialing, SMS texting, voicemail and contacts. No wonder Apple hasn't given its blessing yet. I certainly wouldn't either.

It's Apple's phone. They can allow whatever the hell they want on the phone. I don't get it. If Google wants to compete, let 'em start their own phone OS... er... wait a second...

They didn't...Apple is LYING in the letter to the FCC or at the very least playing VERY VERY DUMB.

It doesn't. It doesn't "redefine" or replace anything. Apple is either lying, or playing dumb and hoping the FCC doesn't notice.

Edit: haha matthremyates, we just said the exact same thing. :)

It redefines nothing. It provides an alternative to some and improvments on others. Other apps do the same for the same features. The difference is that google wad going to do them well and centralizebtgem into a single app.

Another point for Apple.

The more we hear about how things work at Apple the more their decisions make sense. I don't know why so many people are trying to read things into what was printed. Take it for what it is and if it bothers you so much then do as many have already stated and move on.

How is it another point for Apple? They blatantly lied in that statement.

Its is arguably anti-competitive. The iphone is an entirely closed system and unless you jailbreak your phone you have to rely on Apple's system to access and install the apps. What other computer maker says whether applications are able to compete with their own offerings. Not even Microsoft

Do you complain that your TV, microwave, or wristwatch, which all contain microprocessors are anticompetitive because they don't allow you to install programs of your choosing on them? The iPhone may have a microprocessor in it, but it's NOT a computer. It may allow you to add more programs to it, but not modify it's user interface. It's a phone...not a computer.

Why not, you seem to demand? How about for the sake of customer service? Can you even imagine the confusion when someone calls Apple customer service and the user and CS have two different ways they expect the phone to operate?

Apple gives you a lot of choices with the iPhone, but how applications act and how the user interface works is unified across all applications. To allow one to have a totally different UI is to begin to open the phone to chaos to users and denigrate the experience.

It doesn't seem to bother the other smartphone companies out there...google voice does NOT change the UI of the device...nor does it deactivate any part of your normal service or built in apps, the comments Apple made about why they denied the GV app are just plain lies.

P.S. people have installed alternative OSs on wristwatches

No one cares about this outside of the Mac internet forums. And I find myself caring less and less about it the more play this story gets.

It doesn't deserve this much attention. It's a single app, which on its own isn't very impressive to begin with.

why are you so upset?

I do not get this at all... if you and others do not like what is being done, you can jail-break your phone and be done with it. Jezzz...

It's not about working around the limitations by using a hack. It's the mafia like attitude of Apple that pisses me off. I'm going to dump my apple stock. Still love my Mac Pro / Air but I despise the mentality of Apple. It's not a company that I want to be supporting.

i for one think apple put it pretty simple when they essentially said "if someone doesn't like our product, or doing business with us, then go to Android, no one is stopping you."

it may not be the best situation, but like its been pointed out already, apple isnt doing now anything they didnt say they would do back when they announced they would open the iPhone up for 3rd party development.

given the success of the iphone/ipod platform and the app store sales and offerings, i think it's pretty obvious that the whining and moaning that is continually expressed on this forum and elsewhere, is not at all representative of the iphone/ipod consumer community as a whole. survey after survey by numerous independent groups have shown that iphone/ipod users are extremely satisfied with their apple experience. and theyre showing it with their wallets too.

Well, sure it's a shame about Google Voice - to some. I personally could care less. But every major app will have its cheerleaders, and if it promises something interesting and is ultimately rejected, there'll be crying over it.

Tech forums and tech writers are the one's applying the spin to all this. Once again it's the niche online interest groups that are projecting their interests onto the wider market. Major news outlets pick up the story because suddenly a government agency is involved. If the FCC hadn't stepped in this story would have been dead in a matter of days.

Meanwhile, everyone, and I mean, EVERYONE is lining up to develop for the iPhone - often passing up other devices.

If you don't like what's on the App Store or Apple's policies, then you can go to one of the other vedors who I'm sure will offer a vastly better experience overall.

Oh wait . . .

so youre okay with being a total hypocrite?!

you despise apple so much that youre willing to lose out on any financial gain you could see through their success, but in the same breath you say you love that company's product whose R&D, production, distribution, sales, and support are all based on a business model that you so utterly despise?

Of course you don't care, it doesn't affect you directly. If you did use GV and actually understood what it was, maybe you'd care. Thanks for stopping by.

edit: I don't expect you to see you complain when something you use gets revoked from the App Store unceremoniously.

It's a single app.

Get over it.

It was 3 removed from the store and 1 rejected. Seems like more than "a single app." I wish I was cool like you, but I prefer not to piss on what people found use of just because I didn't use it myself.

The 3 that were removed had been there for months until the official app came along. All 3 were quickly yanked from the store without much more than "duplicating features."

They have 40 full-time App Store reviewers which look at about 8,500 new/updated apps each week. That's ≈42 per reviewer per day, or 1 app reviewed per reviewer every ≈12 minutes. Seems about right to me.

Wrong genius!

If Apple wants a CHANCE at a long term future for their app store their going to have to hire and train MORE REVIEWERS.....M A N Y M O R E R E V I E W E R S ! !
