I vote for sold out of stock.
I used to watch the refurb store alot. There is never huge stock in there (at least where I am). It can empty out pretty quickly at times. And I think usually there is only 1 for each option in the list. If people were waiting to buy and didn't like the updates they would have pulled the trigger on a refurb fairly quickly. FYI they usually only update it once a day - midnight or 1am where I am depending on daylights saving time. It shows no stock for about half an hour at that time and then comes back up after 30mins or so.

Edit: Checking the refurb store now there are alot of 2016 13"s still, but the number of 15"s has gone down since yesterday.

I just checked as well, and inventory reflects what was there this morning: one 2015 15" and one 2015 13" Not sure where you're seeing "alot of 2016 13"s still" cause there's none. Zippo. Zero. Maybe you're in another country?

Looks like they're back, and Apple has actually lowered the prices even more. The base 2016 nTB used to be $1269, now it's $1189. Not a bad deal.
They usually reduce the price further on liquidating old stock. I suspect they ran out of 2016 "refrubs" and now they're selling the unused/unsold 2016 models at a steeper discount

"ran out" I don't think so. I monitor the refurb website religiously, and the refurbs that are on sale right now are the exact same ones that were on sale right before WWDC. They pulled them for some reason, then put them back up for sale just this morning. Perhaps they were updating the keyboards in each one with 2017 keyboards?? You know, to minimize returns? Could be anything. No matter. They are there, so we'll see how they sell now with the new Pro out.

That's your opinion, mine is they did.

Given how machines come and go on that site, and I usually take the simplest explanation instead of more convoluted theories, I think its more likely they ran out.

Occam's razor
Suppose there exist two explanations for an occurrence. In this case, the simpler one is usually better. Another way of saying it is that the more assumptions you have to make, the more unlikely an explanation is. Occam's razor applies especially in the philosophy of science, but also more generally.

Maybe they did "run out"... they are back this morning...

I am not an Apple apologist... sometimes they do stuff that can't be explained... but time for the hatin' for the sake of hatin' to just stop.

I wish the 2015 15.4 inch refurb was around $750. I could stomach that easier.
I hear you man. The late 2008 MBP I just upgraded from was purchased off the refurb store the day after the 2009 refresh for $1,349 , a $650 discount off its price from the day before. Don't see those type of discounts anymore LOL.

I'm sure they do that. Just like they go through the trouble of unwrapping everything so they can have off hours Apple Store employees open up the machines and pump a couple of sprays of "New Mac" smell just to freshen them up.

...or maybe they simply sold the inventory they had at their processing facility and listed additional units as they arrived from other locations and could be bar coded into the online system.

Naaah, let's go with the really implausible theory. It's the Illuminati in Tim Cook. Everything has to be an illusion. Believe at your own peril.

I cannot imagine Apple spending any time updating these machines.

But at least, as you point out, refurbed 2016s are available to buy.

Yeah. I got a similar steal on the 2008 refresh. I bought it in 2009 two days before the new model was coming out. It was already a nice discount, but then it got discounted even more, but I was within my 10 day price match window and was able to get the difference refunded to me.

I don't remember what I paid, but I was amazed at how much I saved. I never came close to scoring another deal like that again off Apple.

Wonder what's up. Any opinions? This morning there were tons. Now there's none. Surely they didn't sell out in one day??
Would have been Great to snag one and have it swapped for a Kaby Lake version.

I think they were pulled. Many of the configurations have been sitting in stock for weeks. Wouldn't surprise me if they were swapping these out with 2017 internal parts.

Probably best to "gut" them for the Chasis and Display and replace the guts.
