I worry that a lot of current users will not be aware of this news, and if I recall correctly, apps removed from the App Store can still run on your iPhone. This keeps people who already downloaded the app at risk, but on the other hand, I think it's good that Apple can't delete downloaded apps from our phones. Hmmm...

BTW if you guys didn't know, in the early days of Snapchat, if you gave Snapchat camera permissions, Snapchat would turn on the front facing camera every time you launch the app, even if you weren't taking selfies. The front facing camera would stay on for as long as the app is on the foreground of your device.

So Apple, in spite of its curation, fails to find that an app is (in essence) leaking data to "the authorities". Seems like a big FAIL of their system.

And how can Apple do that without tracing through 100 thousands lines of source codes, or snitch on every single TCP connection a piece of software makes and trace its source ? Not to mention that all the communication must have been heavily encrypted.

Sorry but Apple does not have a fairy dust-driven lab to do that.

First of all I'm citizen of Saudi Arabia, this app is portal to get everything government related to be done electronically. From renewing your car registration, renewing your passport and booking appointments with government offices. There was a law before for Guardianship, which means you have to issue a permit to for your wife to travel alone (this was reformed this year). The app is also used to issue a permit for who your kids can travel with as well. You cant really track or get messages when they travel. What happens is when they exit through a passport check point it just register that the individual has left the country.

Just don't believe everything you read in the media.

It is indeed an interesting question as to what difference is between this app and WeChat.
Maybe the developer of ToTok can sue on that grounds?
That would be interesting.

CIA and so on are deep into Facebook, WA, all of this.

WeChat is censored, so is Facebook.

"Independent fact checkers have determined this is false"

No that wasn't WeChat. That was Facebook. I should not be surprised because the writing has been on the wall ever since the election but ... I was still kind of shocked... and I threw up a little in my mouth.

Thanks for telling me what to think, Facebook!

This is just one of the endless differences between a real news source that you have to pay for (NYT) and garbage cable
TV “news” channel. Never in a million years would any cable TV (or free online website like Buzzfeed, et al.) ever deliver a story like this. The amount of work, collaboration, resources and vision it takes to break headlines like this are extraordinary, yet most of us take it for granted.

With your opinions, as with so much else, it’s garbage in garbage out. I hope that those who care about being informed are willing to support quality information. Supports quality newspaper or magazine. Don’t fall for the Twitter-as-news trap. It’s it opinions wrapped in opinion. Same with Fox News (though it possesses no soul) and most other **** on TV posing as news resources. If it’s free, just know you’re consuming junkfood that doesn’t do well at sustaining life.

It's probably a failure of some kind of necessary monetary exchange taking place. "Customers" are just assets for milking, it couldn't be more obvious.
