Only we can do that...... lol

Are you referring to the OSX utility? That thing is a piece of garbage. You shouldn't have temperature controls on basically any lcd, because the implementation will result in some loss of detail.

My question is...why don't apps get screened for their use of non-public APIs as a basic, tier 1 requirement for app approval in the first place?

Ok.... I am NOT a dev or anything; but it seems to me that in 9.3, now that nightshift is baked into the OS, it could possibly wreak havoc if two processes start "fighting" to change screen temp at the same time... double battery drain, etc.

I don't see the point to this app anyway. I prefer a white screen. Have no plans on changing it. As soon as 9.3 comes out I'm turning Nightshift off.
I joined the beta program only to turn on Nightshift long before iOS 9.3 comes out and I would never turn it off again, if not the sun would go up during the day. I prefer a candlelight screen.

It is annoying for the many people who have no device that supports Night Shift (and there are plenty of those), but the app looked dodgy, and awkward. I hope Apple will eventually make a Night Shift version for the Mac.

I will definitely use NightShift on my iOS devices. Since I use my rMBP at night as well and find the light very harsh on my eyes (sleep or non-sleep is a non-issue, eyes hurting from looking at the screen in dim light a BIG issue however), I really hope users will get this on OS as well. No matter how you reduce brightness the eyes hurt and eventually I just give up and shut down.

As for the developer of FlexBright, I bet he was well aware of what was a no-go and did his best after several rejections to slip something past. No user needs silent audio to drain their battery. That's disgusting. It's stuff like this by such developers that hurts Apple. Glad he was found out before lots of people were complaining and the press came out with another negative bashing article. I can see it coming with this guy getting booted anyway.

I knew it! That’s why I have bought FlexBright right away, and now I have a safely backed up ipa file sitting right here on my disk, so that I can enjoy the f.lux (or Night Shift) type color change on my iPad 4 ;)

Apple, you can take it when you pry it from my cold, dead hands :p

i have no problem with this. i can only imagine the mess it would cause with the average user dealing with third party apps and the troubleshooting nightmare it would cause, especially on the eve of the feature being implemented in iOS 9.3...

imagine the average user complaining that their pictures look yellow or different and associating it with the camera or their screen and apple not being able to assume in any measure the fault of any one given app

That has to be the lamest excuse I have seen yet, just to give support to Apple's Big Brother grip on what one can or cannot do on their own iPhone! Really? If someone goes through the trouble to download (or buy) this app, do you really think they would be puzzled as to why their screen is yellow or blue or whatever? And people claim Android users are dumb?

There are 3rd party camera apps for the iPhone...I don't see the problem there, and neither does Apple.

They're protecting their ASS because this wonderful, great new feature that will surely take up 20 minutes of the dog-and-pony show will have already existed in this app. Yet another wonderful innovation from Apple.

Yeah ok.... Like apple doesn't already have the best AppStore. I'd say flourishing is exactly what it is doing.

Sure if you play games all day long. Try to find a WIFI utility app that lets you see and control the details of wifi networks like signal strength, etc. (as one example of a type of app that is non-existent in their flourishing app store). Android has plenty, which is why I have to carry two damn phones around.

Still waiting for the fake excuse about Night Shift not being supported on 32-bit devices.
f.lux working on them, this working on them, no technical reason in the horizon...
It was implemented using 64-bit libraries/framework?

This is true, but letting developers "hack around" means that people who don't have good intentions can also do some hacking. I'll take the walled garden that prioritizes security.

Indeed and I will either do that or take the risk depending what I feel like at a particular stage in my digital life.

iOS is excellent for nigh on guaranteeing your security and other things like the predictability of your battery life (which is where 'droid is weak)

Swings and roundabouts, depends what you want.

Seems like the reason for it all have been provided. Aside from the fact that a camera app doesn't change something systemwide outside of itself, the fact that Apple allows them seems to show that they don't have issues with other developers creating apps that do similar things that their own apps do.

Apple is so full of itself when it does stuff like this. I hate to say this but I'm really glad that Microsoft is finally giving them a run for their money in the desktop and laptop space. Now with something like the Galaxy S7 from Samsung which has force touch and animated photos. Honestly Apple needs to mellow out a bit and let their app ecosystem flourish.
Not to nitpick, but the GS7 doesn't have Force Touch.

Well, it's here in 9.3. RSN.

Any other mapping programs? Why yes. Any other apps that take notes, or any other word processors? Yes. Apple doesn't let developers use the private APIs that are in development, before they're bug-tested and so on. Plus, opening a silent audio channel is a no-no, and the developers seemed to know that, since they lied.

No, I was actually referring to the "Night Shift" feature in the upcoming iOS 9.3 update.

As far as the loss of detail goes, I haven't noticed it on my desktop running f.lux, but I haven't really scrutinized tbh.

You sure about this? None of the reviews mentioned it.

Sorry, I stand corrected. You are right that feature didn't make it into the S7 or S7 Edge. Apparently they must be slating it for a later iteration (S8 or some other derivative).

Regardless, as welcome as the feature is, it's current applications are perfunctory at best. Apple again dictates just a bit too stringently how and when developers may utilize features. While this made sense back when hardware resources were limited, their insistence on minimizing memory availability in lieu of adding more tangible value to the consumer and developer (regardless of consistent manufacturing reduction costs) just highlights the magnitude of greed that Apple has become representative of.

What has been done for the past 7 years since the iPhone's acceptance in the market place has been akin to "Trickle Down Innovation". And anyone with a broad perspective on economics can see how well similar ideologies in those realms have faired over time.

I have two questions, the first one is that can't tell from the article if the latest version of the app actually did the silent audio thing or if that was one of the things he was asked to change by Apple before they could approve the app. If it's still in the latest version, does changing Background App Refresh to "off" affect this at all? I don't understand why he needed to make the app keep running in the background if it needs me to reply to a notification to change the settings.

My second question is, does Apple have the ability to take an app out of Notification Center if I've already installed it? If so I find that really intrusive. On my phone it keeps telling me I need to turn notifications on, but I don't see it listed in Settings app -> Notifications.

lol liar liar tsk tsk
The official apple version works great on the beta btw

So what happens if you paid for this app? If you back up to iTunes you can still reload it to a future phone? My phone has been having a issue and might be replaced soon.

Uh... Yes? (welcome to the human race)

It baffles me how so many people complain about the iPhones gimped features and yet they STILL buy the thing. Just go out and buy an Android phone and have all the features you want. My god, is the Apple logo really that important?

Android users are FAR more tech savvy. That's not even debatable. But the good thing is, Android is just as simple to use for noobs as iOS. Both my parents who are tech illiterate are able to get around their Android phones just fine.
