It seems that everyone here cares about the human rights of the protesters but doesn't care for the human rights of the police and the other innocent citizens who are being ambushed and attached, despite all groups being human.

Tell China to bugger off and dare them to pull their multi-billion dollar business with them.

And you know that.... how exactly?
Okay so we're going to play that game. You're the one who made the claim about terrorism and crime. Yet we have no terrorism and crime reported that even remotely implicates any of the apps that track police. Mind you apps like Waze have been active for over a decade. You are simply fear mongering as justification for your beliefs.

I agree that Waze has the potential to be used for a very bad purposes but so far no one has used it for this. It would have been reported and they would’ve been a huge push to have it pulled from the App Store. There was a push to have it pulled just because of the potential danger to police but that’s sort of died down

I'm sure people will ambush police because they must be bored. The system is always right, true story.
People are ambushing police in Hong Kong. It’s not because they’re bored. regardless of the reason it’s a danger to police. Those police officers have family and children they would like to go home to.

To everyone complaining about “free speech”

CHINA is not the USA.

Our freedom of speech is a US law that only states the government cannot restrict your speech. Private companies in the US can restrict speech all they want to without violating that constitutional right.

it is so typical that those in the US and other likeminded countries believe we should force our way on other countries. But when they point out our flaws, we get offended.

China and HK has every right to tell Apple to remove an app. Period.

it is up to the people of China to change their government without outside interference UNLESS they ask for it.

That’s assuming we believe it’s what the app was being used for. I guarantee you Cook and Schiller don’t know and are just doing what they’ve been told by legal.
Yes we can pretend back-and-forth that it’s not happening and police aren’t being ambushed. That’s kind of a waste of posts here. It’s been pulled for that reason and if you just want to pretend that the reason doesn’t exist by all means pretend this

Exactly it’s called wars. If we want to go to war with China to gain Hong Kong’s independence that’s perfectly acceptable. While we’re doing business in China we must obey the local laws

Oh look. Good ole free speech Apple at it again. I guess they didn’t just stop with InfoWars like everyone said? Huh.

free speech onl
Cook has just lost all his credibility when it comes to human rights advocacy. Why did he fold so easily? Because not only would Apple have lost its Chinese markets, but it would also be severely affected in terms of its manufacturing capabilities in China, had Cook ignored the Chinese demands.

By not having a contingency plan vis-à-vis its manufacturing capabilities outside China, Cook allowed Apple to be strong armed by the Chinese dictatorship.

Incidentally, this has nothing to do with the trade war instigated by Trump. This would have happened even without the trade war. The reliance on the market and the manufacturing facilities of a ruthless dictatorship makes you defenseless of its blackmail. The logistics guru like Cook should have known it. China has just raped one of America’s greatest companies.

This is a new world we are living in as of this morning. China has just learned that they can blackmail everyone, including America. Good on Google for leaving China years ago. Next step? Trump should ban Google from giving its OS to Chinese companies. Let HTC, Sony, and Samsung have Android. Strangle all Chinese smartphone manufacturers by denying them Android licenses.

so you are for corporations violating laws they don’t like?

That would set a wonderful precedent where the rule of law no longer matters.

Wrong. Waze has been used to attack and kill police in the US.

There is like a huge boycott for Blizzard because of this, why no one is boycotting Apple?
I’m sure some will boycott Apple. In my opinion boycotts are stupid because it’s just not possible to boycott every company you disagree with. I disagree with most companies political crap but you know what I still buy from them. If there’s an alternative such as a company I could buy from that has a political view that’s more preferable or just doesn’t have a political view I’ll buy from them but usually that choice isn’t available.

Apple ( and other companies ) aren't political organisations. They can express their positions on various social subjects ( which Tim Cook often does), but at the end of the day they have to conform to whatever law is applicable in the country they are doing business in. And that's how it should be, even if that law sucks, even if that government is lead by morons. If there is a law that forces them to do something, they have to obey it , period.
The only either choice is to NOT do business in that country ( which could be the right choice sometimes ).

The only group that should be allowed to decide how things should be run in any country, are its native inhabitants, its people. Not foreign businesses.
It's either that , or pull out of the country ( which did work for South Africa for example, but I doubt it will work for China unfortunately)
Right, that’s the whole point of this contention.

IF Apple is truly pro-human rights (as it claims to be), they should not be bowing to China‘s such requests.

OTHERWISE, Apple should follow the laws in every country, BUT IN DOING SO risks being extremely hypocritical, their reputation will (and should) suffer, and they should stop their progressive virtue signaling.

Waze doesn’t violate US laws. If it did Apple would remove it. Hell, Google would kill it. Corporations have to follow the laws of the countries they do business in. The do NOT get to ignore the ones they don’t like.
That would set a dangerous precedent

Cite the Hong Kong law that this app violates.
Police on the US is passed about Waze and demanded that it be pulled. The difference is that we still have a democracy in this country.

Not sure why everyone here is so critical of Apple in this situation.

It’s simple. China is a communist government that deems certain speech illegal so Apple doesn’t really have much of a choice as I see it. It’s a lose lose situation for them. They either remove the app and upset a few people here on macrumors OR they keep it up and upset the government where all their products are made.

Glad I live in a country where we at least have the illusion of free speech.
