Apple appears to have pulled the latest macOS Mojave Security Update (2020-005), which was released on September 24 alongside the macOS Catalina 10.15.7 update. Apple has also removed Safari 14 for macOS Mojave from download.

Both the Mojave Security Update and the Safari 14 update were causing numerous problems for those still running macOS Mojave, as outlined by Mr. Macintosh.

macOS Mojave users who installed the updates have been noticing memory issues, slow boot times and Finder stalling, numerous system.log entires, and crashes when attempting to use Migration assistant, among other problems. Complaints about the update started shortly after it was released, but Apple did not pull the updates until yesterday.

Those who had already downloaded the Mojave Security Update or installed Safari 14 should soon be getting a fix in the form of updated software that addresses the bugs that were introduced. Reverting to a Time Machine backup, reinstalling macOS Mojave, or installing macOS Catalina also seem to successfully fix the issues.

(Thanks, Jeff!)

Update: Apple has released a supplemental update for Mojave which presumably addresses the issues above. It should become available in your macOS software update.

Why are folks still on Mojave?

Edit: OK, I get it. :)

Because Catalina.
I still have Mojave on my MBP because I play a 32bit game that won't get a 64-bit update.

I REALLY thought the harddrive of my MBP had died. Constant beachball cursor and took 10 minutes to launch system settings. Turned out to be this terrible update. I fixed it by CMD + R on boot up and then 'reinstall MacOS'!

Glad Apple has acknowledged this issue and pulled the update.
Because the alternative that is still receiving security updates is Catalina, and no one wants to use that unless they have to.
Because Team Fortress 2 doesn't have a 64bit binary on macOS
cause Catalina sucks
Because Adobe CS6 does not work with Catalina and it was the last version that didn't require a subscription.
because I won't be able to use Photoshop anymore
My company‘s policy is to stay one OS/app version below the latest and greatest version to avoid the latest and greatest bugs.
Ummm. 'cause I won't use the buggy catalina. why did you update to Catalina?
The better question would be "why are folks installing Catalina" ?
Because I hate the name Catalina.
Because Adobe CS6
Legacy app support and none of the BS iOSification of the newer ones
No support for 32-bit apps in Catalina.
MacOS Mojave would be the last version of macOS to run 32-bit apps.
You’re kidding, right?
You must take up anything apple gives to you...including your arsehole.
Because Cancerlina got rid of Dashboard? 🤔
On my work Mac - Because the Catalina is problematic with some required software that IT needs us to have.

Many of us wouldn't use much of the new updates in Catalina anyway.
Have you used catalina at all? Literally a new bug is found every week and its not even minor ones. Im glad I didnt update to Catalina and especially this safari 14 update.
Mac Pro 5,1
Ask anyone using Logic Pro, some of us still have ancient plugins that won't run under Catalina ;)
Because we're still using good old Mac Pro 5,1s and a lot of software we rely on for business have been abandoned by the developers and theres no alternatives.
To avoid the Catalina disaster
I have a Mac Pro 5,1 that can't upgrade and I haven't made peace with the Dashboard going away. I have a few latent 32-bit apps that I need to exorcise but on the iMac that I did upgrade to Catalina I still haven't found something that replicates the effectiveness of the Dashboard yet in terms of customisability, widgets and interaction model. There's an app on the App Store that claims to be a Dashboard replacement but it doesn't come close. There wasn't anything that Catalina added to my life that struck me as a must have either, if anything what distinguished Catalina for me was that it took away a bunch of stuff.
Catalina has been shown to lose mail. Most people cannot risk this, and wisely will not upgrade until the problem is acknowledged and a fix issued.
I have a MacPro 5,1 12 core machine with a new video card that can run rings around most Macs but Apple does not allow it to upgrade to Catalina.
Because 60% of my 3rd party applications don't work in Catalina and never will.

My one Catalina test system was an epic fail in every way.
Because with FCPX on Mac Pro 2013, rendering is better.
Because Snow Leopard will only run inside a VM on this Mac.
Removal of HAL support. Now my expensive audio hardware does not sync / stream audio anymore.

another one ... I did install Safari 14 a few weeks ago and don't seem to have issues, I don't recall installing a security patch in the last week, it's not listed under installations so where do I look/find out?
Apple has some big OS update issues right now: Catalina causing CPU issues, iOS and watchOS battery drain and others.
This is not good, not what we're used to ...

Glad they pulled it. Safari 14 has been awful on my iMac running mojave. I'm now constantly needing to re-login to all websites daily, even though I have the "keep me logged in" or "remember me" checked. Never had this issue with Safari 13.

Mine has seemed a touch slower than usual, but I haven't seen any actual problems (yet)...
