And this is one of the several reasons why I'm slowly but surely migrating away from Apple and their products. I've been an "Apple fanboy" for many, many years. (Going back to 1982 to be precise) and Apple has become a shell of their former self. I realize that no technology company can release software that is bug free. But Apple seems to have become King of the Buggy Software. I could go on and on but I'll spare everyone. I'm at the end of my rope with Apple.
See ya Apple. It's been a long time coming.

have you guys installed the supplemental update in your MacPro5,1.
Mine is stuck for half an hour now since pressing the update button.

Edit: it's up again ?
Since my RX580 doesn't provide a boot screen with dual display setup I just had a black screen.
I just touched the power button for a split second and the Mac lost power immediately.
Then I could power it up as usual. First boot was without a chime though.

i had this problem on a high sierra hackintosh but it turned out that the integrated video was displaying the BIOS. i never had a monitor hooked up there. i guess MacPro5,1 does not have integrated video though since it has a Xeon CPU.

anyway glad to hear it is working!

I just restarted my MBA after it seemed to have bogged down my WiFi and it has gone into some update process.

Is the update initiated without any user permission?

Does Apple at least require some level of internal dog fooding? Like, install it on your family machine at home, encourage your spouse to try it out and live with a little bit. I’m sure they would catch some of these issues. Controlled betas and internal clients are not gonna find showstoppers like actual production systems out in the wild. They also need to get a special subset of out in the wild testers, like actual A/B testing.
Usually they’ll do this for latest OS beta by running Big Sur. But what happens is fixes into Big Sur have to be backported to the N and N-1 releases. Most companies have a sustaining org whose key mission is to never regress existing software of customers via update. Apple seems very tardy in this area.

Hey Camelia, I responded to you on my site but just saw your post here. The default install order for software update is to install the supplemental update (Safari 14) first then the security update 2020-005. If you want you can just let the supplemental update install and you should still be fine. Or you could just try the install order again and see if that works! ?

Strange Apple is offering the same Security Update 2020-005 10.14.6 again, they do not look like new versions: Safari shows as ver 14.0

are these updated and safe?

Now fixed for me. What I did:
Quit App Store
Open Terminal
Copy/paste in open $TMPDIR/../C/com.Apple.appstore/ after $
Hit Enter
This should open a Finder window, with the folder com.Apple.appstore highlighted
Delete its contents
Open App Store and run updates
This worked on 3 different Mojave Macs.
Yess, works fine and all updates done: cDock and memory usage normal. No more annoying messages in the logs.

Hi! I had installed the security update 2020-005, which slowed my Mac to unbelievably low levels so I had to restore using a snapshot. It took my Mac back to just before installing the security update and now it's working fine.

I've noticed that there's a supplemental update, but the security update still shows in the updates list. What should I do? Install both? Neither?

This is actually the wrong order. Supplemental must be installed last. Why Apple releases an updates where the order of installation is critical is a topic for another discussion, I guess Mojave is not a priority.

Yes, had the same issue. Had to reinstall from scratch. after installing automatic updates with the two patches, i got the freeze to slow screen response. Then downloaded the security patch from apple.com/download And installed. Currently it “looks” like the system is now ok...but will wait.

it does look like the order of installation matters.

Doesn’t apple test their patches on macs first before release? Or are the users the testers without consent?

Is it so, that Apple does not offer any deeper changelog to these Security Updates?
If they do, where it can be found?
I'm not interested in security updates, only bugfixes to OS...

I guess there's no public documentation from Apple about why macOS Mojave Security Update (2020-005) was pulled and what's different in the one offered now?
And also no info on how to separate these two with each other?
I have update caching on, how do I know that the one offered is the patched one?

The one thing I noticed on my Mac that has since been fixed was when I did a tmutil status it would print a bunch of Objective-C warnings about overlapping methods in private frameworks with undefined behaviour. My guess is that someone refactored something in Big Sur or Catalina and when the security fix was backported to Mojave it pulled in more than it should have. App Store updates didn't seem to process for me though the recent updates fixed it.

I found a this in one of my log files which give an indication of some clashes:
