I'm with ya..

I'll bet you've never tried Oculus Rift? I don't know a single person who has used a modern VR headset and called it a gimmick. Not ready for primetime, needs content, needs ironing out - sure. But no one with first-hand experience calls it a gimmick. With respect, I think in 1-3 years your comment will be tossed in the bin with "no one will buy a smartphone without a keyboard" :p

Near term: Walking directions guided by floating arrows, colored sidewalks, etc. Long term: projected onto the windshield for your Apple Car!

This. The Oculus Rift and other devices like it must be experienced first hand. Most people who have tried it are amazed by it. I've borrowed a friend's unit one time and had relatives try on an ocean demo in which you're submerged in the ocean, watching whales, sharks, and fish swim by -- they were just floored.

Of course, the platform is not completely fleshed out. Most titles are simply demos to show you what can be achieved. Nevertheless, it's definitely not a gimmick.

I like the narrator's voice in the video. Gave me tingles.

Like virtual reality, augmented reality is yet another gimmick that will go nowhere. Sorry, folks.

sorry, singular Folk. if you don't see the oculus rift as the first step in an entirely new era of the human experience as we know it (or can even imagine), i'd recommend you don't ever operate heavy machinery. something's not quite right up there in the noggin. :roll eyes:

you would have said the same exact thing about computers themselves in 1965.

So we have another 45 years for the technology to reach maturity?

I’ll wait.

if you have any inclination to believe some futurists who cite current tech and the direction trends and development seem to take today, then sure: in 45 we'll have VR that taps into our nervous system and lets us truly experience all the sic-fi-told myths and legends will become as 'true' as our minds could possibly allow in this universe with these physical laws. yeah, i'd say the evolution will be similar in world changing ways. unless governments decide that it's all a bit 'too much' for us commoners to handle, i don't see how VR won't change nearly everything.

since you're on a computer and not a hermit, i'll be willing to bet you'll try the crescent bay within 2 years of it release, no matter how stubborn you are against it. or have you tried the dk2 and you're just one of the unlucky folks who gets nauseaus when 95% of others don't?

Then I'm afraid you've lost the bet already. I haven't tried any vr headset and have no plans to do so.

Where do Metaio customers and developers go now?

Well, this news isn't good for Metaio's current customers and developers who invested their efforts into Metaio's platform. Everything has been shut down. Where do they go now?

Interesting, but I can see people walking into traffic because they're looking at a street in 1940s Germany.

You might think this was a smart and witty comment. I find it is rather narrow-minded, and to be honest it is stupid to suppose that people are unable to see where they're walking because a small portion of their visual field is "covered" by an iPad.
You're American by any chance…? Then it might help then if you think this for the NYC Twin Towers or the buildings involved in the Oklahoma bombings, or if you go back in our own history, the city of Detroit when it was still in its car-producing glory.

Same comments were made when VHS recorders were introduced: "people will watch more TV all the time". We all know that what happened was quite the opposite.
