There's something wrong on your end. Preinstalled iLife should receive updates through Software Update. Besides, there is nothing preventing you from downloading the updates directly from the Apple website.

I checked 5 times already and don'e see any updates. I haven't modified iLife in anyway either so...

Also, the other method is tedious and annoying.

I've never used the Mac App Store, does it not just provide you with a .dmg download of the program you purchase? If not then how are you supposed to back up you software or transfer/install it on a new machine?
Migration Assistant or (LOL) download everything all over again.

I can manually make Steam backups to removable media or another volume. I keep my spare hard disk around for that.

Is it me, or my ISP, because these updates (363.4 Meg) are going to take two hours to download??????

just wait to see how long 3.72 gig takes

BTW I am on a 100mb cable and it said 45 mins for the ilife UG stopped it and started it then got the job done at 12mb/s ( full speed)

You can re-download it to any Mac that you've set up your Apple ID on (probably a limit of 5 or something).

Yes, it's a pain to re-download, but the good point is that you're licensed to install software on all the machines in your household.

Personally, I prefer the App store way of doing things.

Thanks for the tip! Stopped it and started it again and I'm pulling 1.5 MB/s here. Should be done in 2 minutes... :D

You can manually make backups of MAS installed apps too - just drag the app from your applications folder to a removable drive and you're done.

Okay, hmm.... I guess that's the easiest way to stop piracy as there's no physical copy to be shared/distributed. However, I don't think I like it. Maybe, it's just me, but I want a copy of what I own, not to be reliant on Apple, the cloud, or having an internet connection. Call me old fashioned, but it gives me peace of mind knowing that if something crazy happens I've got the original media or .dmg download stored somewhere and I can start all over if I need to.

Surely, OSX Lion is going to provide some kind of physical media back up solution. If your OS crashes you can't log onto the App store to download a fresh copy.

How do you do this? iLife '11 came with my Macbook Pro, so I assume it's on my Apple ID. I don't want to get charged $15 multiple times though.

You can only update and redownload software from the Mac App Store if you bought it from the Mac App Store. If it came with your computer, updates will come through software update and reinstalls would come from the software restore disks that came with your Mac.

I was wondering about this as well. Does your Apple ID get blessed with iLife/iWork now if it comes pre-installed on the computer?

I think we will learn some more once hardware with Lion pre-installed comes out.

Didn't show up for me in Software Update at all. Apple software updates that I have purchased through the App Store never have, which I think is stupid. Even if you buys something through the App Store by Apple it should still be updated only through Software Update. Other applications in the App Store, okay that's fine.

Just my opinion.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_8 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8E401 Safari/6533.18.5)

Does one have to manually check for updates in the Mac App Store if the product was purchased there or will the updates still come through the traditional software update prompt?

Just showed up for me via software update. Pretty sizable. Lion is coming sooner than later with all this activity today.

I just updated through software update, and I also had a iWeb and iDVD update as well. 588mb.

So I updated and iPhoto still says 9.1.3. iMovie and Garageband are showing the current versions. Anyone else noticing this?
