Seriously, the dust particles that fall on it are more visible than that tiny speck that isn't even in front of the sensor.

Scratches, death pixels, etc. - those shouldn't be there out of the box. A tiny spec of dust 99% of the iPhone buyers wouldn't even have noticed...

I understand you paid a lot of money for it, but I think you are pushing it a bit too far here. Oh, and just a note: your signature still says you own a 32 GB iPhone 4S (which obviously has become an iPhone 5 :p).

Yeah but worries me is the speck of dust can move over time. I have a crappy camera and can't take a proper picture of it, but it look more like a piece of grit than dust. But this was there out of the box. My loose sleep wake button also bothers me, as none of the demo units in the apple store were loose, nor had dust in the lens.

Still have that 4S. :p

I forgot to add that my friend has a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and his phone doesn't have any cosmetic problems; despite being made the same way as the iPhone. Nothing in his camera lens. No loose, rattling buttons anywhere. So why does the iPhone have these problems?

They're not all made the same way.

Bottom line: The OP paid for a product that was delivered below his expectations/standards. Dust INSIDE the lens is an issue for most people I think. Go exchange the phone or call AppleCare and have them replace it. That isn't acceptable. Tell Apple you'll keep the phone if they refund you half the full retail cost of the device. They'll likely laugh at you. Then turn around and laugh at them for expecting you to keep a device with such an issue. My motto holds true here. Ask yourself, "Is it supposed to be like that out of the box?" If the answer is no, then there's your answer.

Dust under the camera cover is not good, it's not normal or unavoidable either, and it's not within specification. Take it back.

Come on??? Who wants a manufacturing defect in their new shiny iPhone? If it was part of the design then that would be one thing. How is this ok? If the phone costs less than $100 I wouldn't care, but $749!!!

Not too mention my sleep wake button is very loose and rattles. Hold your finger on it, no rattle. Camera rattle is normal.
Don't buy an expensive DLSR they have dust to. If the dust is out of focus its invisible . Sell it trash it but just go to another phone.

The difference is that DSLR's can be cleaned by the user for the most part when dust get's on the refractive lens. Maybe not so much the image sensor if that is an issue. The camera is one of the most important parts of the phone for me, so scratches or dust in the camera apparatus is a big deal for me and I can understand the OP's frustration in this case. Even though it may not cause a problem right now, it may in the future.

Yes, they did. :p

Yes of course!

Where an item is not hermitically sealed, it is virtually impossible to prevent the possibility of dust ingress. Dust can even penetrate the "innards" of the most expensive DSL camera lenses (which are many times more costly than the humble iPhone!) even though they may have rubber gaskets fitted fitted to avoid this happening.

The moaners who are busy complaining about the odd speck of dust on the internal surface of their camera, claiming that it is out of spec and ruining their lives, should realise that it has no effect whatsoever on photo quality and just get on and enjoy their phones.

Well, there's your answer. Return your iPhone, get a Galaxy Note 2. Problem solved.

no one wants a defect on anything new

The dust was in there when I got it. I just thought it would go away on its own.
So now you're complaining about it, why did you leave the store???? "I thought it would go away" LMAO

Yes. Nice knowing these products cost a lot of money and they come with imperfections.

If you want to settle for imperfections be my guest, but I won't.

YOU DID! , read your quote above. When you walked out of the store with it like that YOU SETTLED.

I PAID $749. It wasn't an upgrade!!!
And it seems you have a fine device and one that gets used judging by your case. Why are you so upset now???

If (when) the dust speck moves to the lens and cover the lens it will a problem when you want to take a picture. That wasn't all that hard to understand, was it?

So you just take a photo of your camera with the dust, with serial number visible, and when this turns into a problem you have proof that the fault was present when you bought the phone.

This thread says more about you than it does about Apple. Nothing is perfect. If you demand a world with no imperfections, you're going to be one disappointed and depressed soul. I hope you learn to enjoy life with all it's little imperfections, you'll be much happier. Good luck.

They're not all made the same way.

I had the Note 2 twice. Both started creaking awfully after the first week or so, especially on the back panel.

Not to mention I had to put WD40 on the lock button to not make it sound like a squeaky dog toy. It wasn't good build quality by any means of the word.

Otherwise though, it was decent. Still felt cheap.

I have to admit, I've not been happy with the quality of the goods coming out of Apple lately. Just today I got my Macbook back from them after having to have the HDD replaced the same day I opened it. Having to take a second iPhone 5 back tomorrow as well. An iPad mini I gave to my wife over the Holiday was dead out of the box as well.

Ups and downs I guess.

iPhone 3GS, 4, and 4S never had that problem. This is more of a cosmetic problem though. One which doesn't affect camera performance. I don't know if that warrants a replacement phone?

It doesn't really count as a cosmetic problem if it's not visible to the naked eye.

As far as hardware goes, I'm not sure anyone has been better than Motorola over the last year and a half or so. The revamped Razr line feels premium all the way.
