The sole purpose of the iPhone SE is to get rid of the remaining parts of old models, in Tim Cook's highly efficient way of managing the company. It is not supposed to be a permanent device on iPhone's line-up. And if there is a risk of it cannibalizing the already not so great sales fo the more premium mini model, then Apple will certainly axe it.

Not true. The SE is to meet a 'price point', and to 'control the market'. Every high end company, save a few, come out with 'door buster' deals and models to allow people that can't/won't spend that kind of money, can still flaunt the brand. It only makes sense. Especially in the competitive arena like cell phones. If Apple only solf top of the line/top of the price range phhones, they would be ceding the largest part of the market to their competitors. They aren't exactly geniuses, Apple management, but they also aren't stupid. Forcing people to pony up the big bucks for a 13 would likely stall sales, and they would be bleeding pockets to the droid, and other vendors. I look at it like the idea of first class on an airplane. It's not exact, but the theory at least goes that the people's butts in the front of the plane subsidize the butts int he seats at the back of the plane. They also subsidize the services that the airline provides, and their in-flight employees. So those buying the top-of-the-line iPhone help subsidize the lower models, and if they stopped selling the lower end models, the price would have to go up on the higher end ones to.

It's just Timmy working smart 😂

Why leave money on the table?

Very true. Leaving parts of the market clamoring for iPhones is stupid. They will buy what they can get.

Even the iPhone 4S was available in 64GB!!
This storage option should have been dropped since the 11, at very least.
Tired to see Apple charge exorbitant fees for storage, 256GB chip is about 10 USD..
Ipad mini base storage is 64 or need a 150 USD premium to get 256GB. Intolerable

You say Intolerable. Apple says profitable!

All low end Android phones? No, they're not. I can show you dozens of newly released low end Android phones that still come with 32GB or 64GB which is fine because they have expandable storage.

If you had said budget/mid-range Android phones, you'd be correct.

But maybe your definition of low-end is different than mind. For me, low-end means under $200.
It is about time, as all but low-end Android phones are moving to 128 GB minimum.

I hope they resurrect the iPhone 8 Plus and name it iPhone SE (2022) or the iPhone 11 as the new iPhone SE...

iPhone 8 Plus - glass back and with TouchID, no notch, 1920 x 1080 screen resolution
iPhone 11 - glass back and with FaceID, with notch, unconventional/non-standard screen resolution

Base storage to be 128GB which should have been done since the introduction of iPhone 11 series back in 2019 although I think they should have done it since iOS 11 [iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X] since it did not include support for 32bit apps...

But pretty much every tech savvy consumer of Apple knows how they do things...

Even their RAM prices were sky high. It's like it's a penalty for not 'buying bigger'. But they are pricing for 'perceived value'. You can't have a good selection of apps with a 64g iOS device. That they sell such small memory configurations IS odd, but cheap iPhones would have to make some consolations...

At this point, the majority of customers buying the SE are price sensitive. So no need for 256GB. When SE came out last year, you could argue some were looking for a new device with a small form factor. Today, you can buy the iPhone 12 and 13 mini.
Disagree. I want an SE because all the other devices are too large, and because I prefer TouchID to FaceID. I'd pay more than what they charge for an SE to get a device with the top of the line camera and screen but that isn't a miniature tablet and can be operated with one hand. The iPhone 12 and 13 mini are both larger than the iPhone 7 and SE, and neither has Touch ID.

No intelligent designer makes a product with a 'sole purpose'. There is usually more than one reason something exists.

That said, the SE fills various needs Apple has. Think of the SE like every auto manufacturer's entry level vehicle. Why does Nissan make that crappy little Versa (no offense to anyone who owns one) when they know the Altima is their best seller? Because it's cheaper for them to make, appeals to young and older people on a limited budget, gets customers in the door, etc.

I also think the SE could be a permanent device...for a few years anyway until Apple works out the complex it's having with TouchID right now. (Whether to go under the glass or on the Power Button. I think they'll eventually narrow it down to one choice and implement it across the board.) Yes, the fact that it has two letters (SE) instead of a number like the rest of the lineup means Apple could just update it with newer specs every so often and slap a version number or year behind it (I.E. the New iPhone SE Plus (2022)).

You make 'profit' sound so dirty...
I think they are in essence. But arguing that is irrelevant to the discussion.

With that being said, apple is still sourcing 64GB NAND flash chip? I thought they have gone single 128GB chip already, or it is not the case just yet?

iPhone SE (2016) - iPhone 5S with A9 chipset and main camera of iPhone 6S
iPhone SE (2020) - iPhone 8 with A13 chipset
iPhone SE (2022) - ?

As I mentioned in another thread, we've reached a level of rent-everything-own-nothing (including storage) coupled with inexpensive cloud-based services that high storage levels on these consumption devices are becoming moot for the average person.

Streaming + iCloud + Cellular/Always-on Wi-Fi connectivity = Thin Client.

And Apple trained us to LOVE thin. ;)

Your use-case choices absolutely have merit, but Apple itself positions the SE line as a price-conscious product. Aside from drop-in upgrades they will not engineer these devices to require new tooling or manufacturing requirements that don't already exist.

It also doesn't escape them that people love those features, so Apple LOVES customers like you.

I for one am glad Apple does the SE line, and I wish they applied the same concept across more product lines so great innovations like TouchID don't die.

An "SE" MacBook Pro like my 2011/2012 with replaceable SSD and RAM would've been killer years ago. Now I use an iPad instead.

Even though NVME is way faster than SATA SSD, I'd still go with MacBook Pro 2012 non-Retina or earlier...

Want bigger storage? Check. Want higher memory? Check.

Just like that, it's gone. Welcome to iPhone 13 era.

RIP!!!

Yes good riddance to iPhone SE! SE lovers looks like mid 2022 or late 2022 you'll have an update, but don't expect that TouchID to be the same ... OLED will be standard and the side button will have your TouchID, watch the complaints begin ;)

PS: I'm STILL peeved no 13 mini advertising, yet Cook in tubers' interview gets all giddy and shows off the iPad Mini, so you know where Cook's heart lies. But the mini got a HUGE boost to 512GB storage this year.

In my case the SE2020 filled a niche. My 6s was starting to have battery issues and was just too small space wise and my wife wanted to get her first iPhone. There was no way we could afford two iPhone 11s at the same time where we could get two SEs for the same price.
I gave my daughter the 6s as her first phone to see how she did and then bought her an SE as her first new phone.
Now that we have more reliable phones my wife and I can take our time and upgrade to a 13 or 14 at our leisure and not even have to upgrade both phones at the same time. The SE definitely filled a niche for us.

🤣 Missed the "but" part.... didn't have my coffee yet.

But even then, newly released mid-range Android phones still come with 64GB. Not all are 128GB minimum

Sony's Xperia 10 III Lite ($425 MSRP) which was released last month only has 64GB vs the non-Lite version's 128GB.

The OnePlus Nord N200 5G ($240 MSRP) which was released in June of this year only has 64GB

Well, many, like my wife and I, expect a small form factor combined with Touch ID, home button and notchless display. We are thankful that we purchased our iPhone SE 256GB devices before their discontinuance.

The 11 is now definitely the better buy then the SE, a far better display and battery life, plus dual camera system for only £100 more

I guess. But if want Touch ID and smaller profile, not that much of a deal.

Echo what others have said, I like my SE and am not wasting money on features I don't want/need/uninterested in.

Long version: I got my first iPhone (3G) to replace my flip phone and Palm Pilot with one pocketable gadget, with bonus of an iPod. Primarily wanted a PDA and phone that was not the Treo.

Fast forward 13 years, my use-case has not changed much. PDA functions are the big hitter, less phone calls these days but more texting, podcasts more than music, some new functions (eg. health related apps), but never a gamer, little/no video playing. So no need or care for OLED to send text, read an email. The cameras in iPhones have been quite good since the 6 and the incremental improvements are adequate for my occasional snap shot needs (still keep a really nice P&S and a mirrorless for more "serious" shooting). Face ID is nice, but like that don't have to look at my phone with Touch ID to unlock (as long as the fingers are not wet/dirty). My last three phones have "only" been 64GB (currently only using 32GB of that), as @Darth Tulhu pointed out, don't need EVERYTHING on my phone and can use it as a thin-client. And all in an easily pocketable, easy to use one-handed form-factor.

So to spend an extra $300 for a 13 Mini just for Face ID being "nice to have" and a "free" upgrade to 128GB... wasting my money imo.

Picked up the SE 64GB for $250 at Walmart. For someone looking for a phone w/ Touch ID and decent specs (has the innards of an iPhone 11)...it's actually still a good deal right now.
I got mine April 2020 - battery down to 84%, won't even make 2 years without AppleCare free replacement. I'm not happy with the battery performance, otherwise the phone is OK for the money if you're a light user.

Yeah I got mine on launch day and my battery is at 90%. For awhile it was dropping 1% a month. Now it’s been holding steady for now. I wish the battery lasted longer.

Do you seriously think the supply chain wizards at Apple would have tens of millions of excess parts?

Tim Cook is "highly efficient" but has a glut of parts? Of course not. The SE is Apple's choice to make a phone for price sensitive customers.
