Tourists across SE Asia routinely go to Japan to buy an iPhone for 10% less and eat and shop for the low JPY.

Well, the AUD increased by roughly 10% ($0.63 USD to 0.70, up to a high of ~0.73) recently, and yet Australians never got a price decrease. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I found out that Apple Japan increased the Apple Watch battery replacement fee today (Saturday, Japan time). It was 14,364 yen this morning for the AW Series 6 and is now 15,818 yen this afternoon (both excluding consumption tax). I bet they’ve also raised battery replacement fees for all other mobile devices today. Weak yen, memory shortages... what could be next? *Sigh*. (I won't bother upgrading my AW Series 6, as it still meet my needs, even without support for watchOS 27.)

Why? The USD increased against the yen much more this past year than it did against the Canadian dollar.

With the price increases, the phones in Japan aren't "a lot cheaper" than in the U.S.

iPhone 17 Pro Max is around ¥195,727 or $1,202 USD. Same phone in U.S. is $1,199.
iPhone 17 Pro is around ¥177,090 or $1,090 USD. Same phone in U.S. is $1,099.
iPhone 17 Air is around ¥161,636 or $995 USD. Same phone in U.S. is $999.
iPhone 17 is around ¥129,818 or $799 USD. Same phone in U.S. is $829.
iPhone 17e is around ¥98,000 or $603 USD. Same phone in U.S. is $599.
iPhone 16 is around ¥113,455 or $699 USD. Same phone in U.S. is $729.

They are pretty much the same (before tax).

Not true. Apple has lowered prices in Australia, and other countries, when the USD was weaker. For example, they lowered prices in Australia just a couple of years ago when iPhone 16 launched.
