This is the logical device for the anti-tablet crowd (hi).

This is a nightstand computer, a coffee shop computer. An email, youtube, browsing computer. It's not for CAD renderings and editing movies. If you want to attach a bunch of accessories, this isn't that computer. The concept is ease of use portability, which doesn't entail dragging along your mouse and external hard drives and all your other gadgets. That's not what's going on here.

Amazing how people are fine with no ports on an ipad, but give a slim notebook the same treatment and everyone loses their minds.
Exactly. Yes, it would be nice to have 10 ports for EVERYTHING, but giving the applications that this machine is built for, it doesn't make sense to add them. Portability is its game, and if you are a power user that need everything and the kitchen sink, there's the the rMBP available.

I really think people overestimate how much they need external appliances these days, when everything can happen online or wirelessly.

if the rumours are true, this 12" model looks like a bit of a mistake. It has the closed design of a tablet, and a screen size that is a tad cramped at best.

Dell have come out with a 13" screen with a 5mm bezel design. Apple should have gone this route, 13" would allow more space and is about the smallest I personally would accept. Anything smaller and we have tablets for that

It seems like some people want this to be a MacBook Pro when it comes to certain specs / features. But, it's NOT a "pro" laptop. Call it an ultra-portable - or whatever you wish. Just keep in mind that it is designed to have less than a standard laptop. The focus is portability, lightness, etc. Be reminded, it was first marketed as a good second computer, not as one's primary computer.

Apple is moving tech forward, sometimes to the dismay of people locked into old ways of doing things. We've been getting nudged by Apple (and others) to have a more wireless (non port) mindset. We should be happy when they nudge us, even if it can be difficult to accept at first.

Bottom line, I'm eager to see what they've come up with.

Not really amazing, different devices have different needs.

Different products different use cases.

I'm not really agianst this product as rumored but rather are more concerned that they keep the 13" MBA around with its current selection of ports. The MBA have just really come into their own with the improvements in chip technology meaning that they can be considered for uses where it would have been impossible even a couple of years ago.

you laugh now

Everyone says it's lame but they will probably boast some good performance, good battery, and some spec that pushes the envelope, combined with the nice form factor and retina, people will shell out for the USB adapter no problem, especially 13" Air owners who thought about upgrading to an 11" and vice versa.

This!

Also: the success of the original MacBook Air, despite being clearly underperforming and very expensive, should have taught these people that not everyone has the same priorities or needs. But still, 2015, there are those who think like "This is not a product for me and my needs, therefore it is flawed and can't be a product for anyone."

MacBook Air 12" will be a huge success, both in sales numbers and in customer satisfaction. But it wont be a computer for everyone.

You've pretty much described a Chromebook- which does all that at a cheaper price point than this new MacBook Air. I love macs and my iPad Air but the last few times I've traveled, I've taken my Acer Chromebook instead of my iPad- it does everything I need and if something happens to it I'm only out $150, not $700, for a replacement.

;)How about if all the ports were in the charging brick:cool:

And what if you want to use a mouse that has a dongle plugged in to the single port and want to charge at the same time? Apple has a dongle for that...

Connect a 24 USB port hub and add as many USB devices as you want (or buy a MBP)!

Apple is going to keep the 13" MBA? Weird. Seems like it would be easier to make that model retina first and maintain some semblance of battery life.

This makes me wonder if the 12" retina (or even non-retina) MBA really exists. Maybe this "MBA" will actually end up being be the iPad Pro. At least there have been parts leaks for that but none I know of for the alleged 12" MBA.

Just slap a retina screen on the current '13 (with all the ports and stuff) and i'll bite. Gets mu thru the Skylake premiere ;)

Why 12"?

I cannot see any reason why Apple would have 12" and 13"? They would be too similar. I would have thought they would have the 12" replace both the 11" and 13".

The Macbook Pro line are getting thinner and lighter anyway, so there are larger screen options available.

Personally I would have preferred they had gone with a bigger screen size for the Air rather than 12". Once they reduce the bezel and remove some of the ports then it is going to be smaller and lighter than the current line anyway

A 12" and a 13" ? Makes long term no sense to me. I assume they move the 13" to 14". Maybe then the MBP goes to 14" and 16" respectively.

Yea don't really get it either. Tbh the bezel is so big on the air screens they should be able to fit the 12 inch screen in an 11inch frame.

You're using it wrong, but seriously how about we just wait an see what their solution is for all of this before we jump to conclusions. There is always that option of, you know... buying something else.

I kind of can imagine having a 27" retina iMac for work and this 12" retina Air as a light travel computer. But in that case I'd still prefer iMac + 12" iPad Pro...

Why a headphone jack instead of a lightning port? The push with audio over it should extend to this new MBA shouldn't it?

Are we not at the phase where there could be some sort of induction type of dock you place it on? Ports and charging? (I haven't paid any attention to that tech, so I'm seriously asking if we are there yet)

I'm on the fence... I might want one to carry around when I need a computer instead of my iPad. But then that seems redundant too.

Why don't people wait until this thing is released before they start freaking out? And those who need lots of ports there is the 13" rMBP, no? Adding retina to the current 13" MBA would make it way too similar to the 13" rMBP.

First MacBook to support external 5K displays

Since USB 3.1 will make this the first Mac laptop to support external 5K displays, I wonder if Apple will finally update the displays too.

This is all good news.

The difference is I can back up my iPad to a MBP or MBA. How do you backup this MBA? My current MBA has a Time Machine backup to a separate hard drive. traveling you don'y always have a fast enough internet speed to back up or access files. I would much prefer at least one USB port. Also it would signal Apple has lost interest in their Thunderbolt.
