Wow, that's 800,000 new versions of buggy 2.0 software per week, too!

Seriously, this is great news for :apple:. I didn't know if the 3G iPhone would be an even bigger hit than the first gen, but this last month has been unbelievable.

Not only that, can you imagine the logistics of simply warehousing the parts, packaging, etc. to readily supply the production line? This must be a rather massive operation!

Well, Apple moves 45 million iPods a year so it's not like this is completely new territory for them.

It is clear that the iPhone could be the next iPod. I remember the first iPods were flat but by the 2nd year it started to explode. I feel like my iPod 5G is a Zune compared to my 3G iPhone.

I don't know how I survived without my iPhone (Pocket Mac).

I would guess that Apple are temporarily ramping up production ready for the next round of launches and to try and meet the high demand in existing territories.

Do you get O2 UK contracts in Gibraltar?

Can ask but as long as I know you get Telefonica and Gibtelecom coverage over there .

Take a plane to gib , you can walk to the main Street ( 15 min from the airport ) and you´ll see around 10 phone shops in 1 mile , buy an unlooked ( officially free ) iphone and go back to the UK , choose the carrier you wanna use and finish .

I think I wanna be there early in the morning on the 22nd to grab a couple 16 gb ( for me a my wife )

They must be working on the crack problem already since the first reports about this came within the first week after the release.
(Maybe it is solved, they're just waiting for test results)

But the design flaw and/or bad materials are pretty embarrasing and should not come to the market. Apple NEED to fix the problem before investing in new production capacity.

And for this same reason I am sure they have stopped the production as we haven´t got any new shipments to Spain ( as long as I know )

The Apple retailer in Marbella told me that they haven`t got one single unit and wont receive until September - October.

I guess then I should not be disappointed not getting one of the first batch .

Wow, that is a ton of iPhones, I suspect that the numbers per week will probably slow down to a lower number though in the future, I just feel that a lot of people that would buy one bought it at launch and that will take away from the numbers buying it later.

There's a big difference between a new Apple product launch and a new Apple product launch that requires a 2-year contract.
The former typically sees a big spike at launch that falls off fairly fast.
The ladder should see a similar initial spike at launch, but should also maintain a pretty steady rate of sales as people's existing contracts with non-AT&T (U.S.) service providers expire.

Factor in a 22-country launch on Aug 22 and... well... 800,000/week seems almost not enough.
Almost.

800K/wk x 20 weeks left (well, 20 weeks to get the phones made and shipped to retail) before the end of the year = 16M phones. I can think of only one reason you'd need that many phones between now and then...

China

I'd expect an announcement soon.

Still, at least in the US, the lines are still long. I waited 2 hrs this weekend to get the white 16G phone.

Hopefully they solved the cracking case problem with these newest 3G iPhones. I imagine they are making replacements of defective ones, too.

I believe there was an article back in March or April where Apple placed an initial order of 5M iPhone 3G's to be built. I take it these are looong gone by now, which should have taken APL well over their goal of 10M phones by the end of 2008. They might be holding back 1M for launch in other countries on Aug. 22. But those will be gone as well in about the same fashion as we seen in the first week of sales for the 3G. I just hope APL don't take same approach that Nintendo did with their Wii, and subject us to long waits for them to ramp up their production on the model. I really think they were conservative with 5M by launch day approach to what they though they could sell. Now look what you done...

Launching in 22 new countries, and having tight stock in the current countries, means that no matter what the production capacity is, Apple will need to get their hands on as many units as they possibly can for the next 5 months through the holidays. They'll be able to sell whatever they can produce at least through then.

great!!

the more they boost up production the more customers they will attract because whenever i visit the apple store they seem to always have a sign up that says "sorry no iphones available today"...

Indeed..

Wow... if this is true, now is the time to be buying AAPL, seeing as it's dipped a bit recently. These numbers dwarf all previous estimates, including some of the high ones Piper has put out. I think the phone is off the charts, and even Apple may be very surprised. App Store also seems wickedly popular, I know I have bought at least $50 worth of apps.

Indeed. I am continually seeing optimistic news on Apple at these sites, and oddly, their stock price just sits there. I remember when it jumped to over $190. But now no matter how much good news we see, it just does not seem to want to go any higher than the $160 mark. Oh well, the value of the U.S. dollar continues to decline thanks to the Fed's continual printing of paper money. Invest in gold and silver!!

Now if they entered the Chinese market with unsubsidized phones they could probably sell 50 million, but otherwise they're thinking too big.

I hope this is true and they are approaching the 10mil mark soon!

Its about time

Nothing is more frustrating than trying to buy a product and not being able to. You lose all of the consumers who were going to buy your device on impulse, because when you can't get the iphone WHEN you want it, you're slowly not going to want it. By the time you don't have to wait in line for hours, you will have moved on from you intense desire to buy an iphone.

This is why I never ended up buying a Wii. I tried and tried, but every store was out of stock. And eventually, I stopped trying, and now I don't want one anymore, so I will not buy one. I bought an xbox 360 instead :D

I don't buy this. 800,000 a week is way over the top, no matter how popular this phone is. That works out to 4,761 phone produced each hour. Where did all that manufacturing capacity come from?

There are ALOT of chinese people in china... :D
