I was thinking about this the other day.

For a rube like me, ChatGPT came out of the blue like a magic trick. It's a technology that is like the first time I saw the interface of OS X debuted or the iPhone introduction.

It's basically the technological level of the movie Her but come to real life. And seemingly overnight. Science fiction is just science and not fiction.

And I was thinking: Someone like Tim Cook, not a rube and paid hundreds of millions a year and goes to conferences with the Illuminati types and retreats with the tech elite, must be aware that technology like this exists before the general public.

But then you see this very reactive hiring spree as if they found out at the same time as everyone else, and you start to wonder about them.
A perfect summary.

Apple doesn't have a visionary leader anymore.

Tim Cook is a supply chain magician - so it should come to no surprise to anyone that Apple's hardware, manufacturing, distribution, and cost for parts is all number 1. No one can compete with that - nobody is even close.

But the downside is, if there's something brand new coming out, Apple gets caught sideways. They bet on AR / VR as "the next big thing" as a reaction to Zuckerberg betting big on it - well it was a massive flop and in reality no one cares. It's a gimmick - it's 3D TV all over again. It is cute, neat, and has no relevance, and is not worth spending billions on - if lucky and their product is really good, they'll make the money back, but it's not a 10x future tech.

But maybe we can also give them a break - even Elon - someone who's been warning about AI, implementing the world's best AI for driving, and early supporter of OpenAI - got caught sideways by ChatGPT. I guess he was just busy with other stuff. But at least he was wise enough not to bet on VR.

The late response is understandable. What really the problem is that Apple had a lead in AI when they bought SIRI, then subsequently squandered it, SIRI was worse than Google voice recognition 2 years on.

And the next problem is Apple with all its money would need to pull off a miracle to compete in AI in house. They should probably do what Microsoft did, hand out big checks and buy up startups. That's the kind of operation they've become.

PS: They should also hire a decent chief designer, their designs are the worst they've been since Jobs returned. Long term, this will impact them.

Your comment made it sound like you were accusing Apple of not having any AI advancements. If that wasn’t your intention and instead you were legitimately asking an Apple employee to spill company secrets to you on a public forum then I apologize. Lol
My point was that person is not an Apple employee and they could not tell me how Apple is on the cutting edge of AI because they are not. They just wanted to post a comment that made them sound like they knew something we don't, so they could feel special for once in their life. Company secrets would not have to be spilled to make that case, if it were true.

Buah hahaha! An article about Apple being on the cutting edge of AI...written by someone at Apple. Nice try and thanks for playing. PS, that's not what I asked for in my OP, now is it?

I'm not sure expecting Siri to function like [say] chatGPT is realistic. Yet. They are two very different animals with two very different objectives functioning within two very different sets of parameters. Getting a multiple OS-level assistant (desktop, mobile, etc.), with access to user's personal data, that must function consistently across a wide range of products and categories, on a range of processors, spanning several generations of hard/software requires a level of consideration that the chatGPTs of the world simply don't need to consider.

Can Siri get more robust at some point? Of course. For reasons mentioned above, it just might take a bit more time. While it may have snuck up on a nobody like me, generative AI did not sneak up on Apple. And just because we're only recently seeing jobs postings now does not infer they are just now thinking "Hmmm, we really need to get on this." It will be interesting to see how this develops. Can you imagine if Apple announced a more robust generative AI-empowered Siri whose minimum requirement was an M3 processor? It might melt the internet.

Apple doesn’t need to be first to market on any tech to be the best. Apple’s model is make it, but make it BEST. Just my opinion🤷‍♂️

And so what? I’m not buying an android phone anytime soon because of google assistant. I’m not using Bing anymore that I would due to Microsoft’s efforts.

My next phone is an iPhone, my next tablet is an iPad.
Well, what else should one expect from AAPL investor? The regular folks on the other hand might be interested in new tech. Why should one stick with the products that are lagging in innovation?

Well, Apple at least should try not to be the last in every tech (dynamic island does not count).

Can you point me to some citation what “regular folks” want? And yeah, more AAPL $$$ better sales. Cognitive dissonance runs deep on MR.

Vote with your $$$. Have fun with your android and be true to your self.
