I clicked YES. Let's see what happens ;-)

(Really looking forward to iOS/iPadOS 18 general release! )
Those who know me as a MR forum user (for more than a decade!) will realize how unusual is this for me to say but: I think I’m gonna stay on iOS 17 just for a couple of months and when iOS 18 launches… maybe I’ll be crazy enough to update to a .0.1 or .0.2 version, something I’ve NEVER done.

I’m not sure what I’ll do, but if iOS 17.6.1 starts giving me as many troubles as others are having with more modern devices, if battery health is horse feces, and the famous keyboard lag that I’m not experiencing on iOS 16.6.1 or iPadOS 17.5.1, then I’ll probably update to iOS 18 early in the cycle. Why?

First of all, unlike iOS 17 which felt like a more subtle update, iOS 18 is very compelling for me for the first time, and it’s not because of Apple Intelligence.

Second, some people report better performance on iOS 18, and there were rumors early in the iOS 18 development about Apple spending a week or two just addressing pre-existent bugs.

So, maybe it’s not that crazy to jump from iOS 16 to iOS 18 after all… I’ll give iOS 17 a try tho, because maybe my experience is better than others’

I'm just downloading this now while connected to the phone and it over 8 gigs, which seems like an awful lot to go from 17.6.1 to a rereleased 17.6.1...

Why would they not call it 17.6.2? This is so stupid
Probably because it’s only relevant to a few models. In the pre-Mac OS X past they’d put out a 17.6.1.1 (for example) for that model and have to deal with millions wanting to update their devices when 17.6.1.1 was only ever qualified for a single model. It wouldn’t even boot other models.

Apple has a better sense of support costs and this is probably better.

Even in this thread, you can see people going through a lot of effort (and bandwidth) to install an update that probably does nothing on their hardware.

Tonight i solved the issue.
My Windows 11 pc invokes Windows Update to get the Apple Devices driver, "Apple, Inc. - USBDevice - 538.0.0.0", tonight it asked, yesterday not.
Well, installing that driver and rebooting the machine, it succeded in seeing the iphone and detecting there was a new ios build ready to download and install.
On 1GB fiber took only 15 minutes, then updated and rebooted without losing any app, data or so on.
Happy.
