RIP, MobileMe.
I won't miss the yearly fee but I already miss Gallery and iDisk!

I thought I would miss iDisk too but I just learned that with the iWork section, it doesn't have to be pages or Keynote, it can be Word or Power point too. You just can't open them on the site. But you can still upload them and download them. Basically iDisk again. Which made me happy.

So after years of service time do they let the Admins into the data center to start pulling plugs? Do the finally get to meet their nemesis XJ-305 server... With a screwdriver!!!!

Do you really think all those servers are as old as MobileMe, those server might as well be in one of the newer Data Centers, they might be newer than you think, even if they are older servers they could still be used for backup for instance.
Even if they are older, they are not just pulling the plugs, what about graceful slow shutdown.

As for all those people which have still data on them, they had plenty of time, Apple warned them many times so they shouldn't moan.

I'd have to say that the death of mobile me is not a bad thing. However i still think iCloud requires improvement too even though it is a much better service than mobile me.

It's this sort of thing that makes me wary of any cloud-based service: the provider can drop the service you're reliant upon. In this case it's a change in corporate direction, but it could equally be a company going out of business or being sold to a competitor. Not to mention the occasional possibility of outages such as the big storm a month or two back that affected the US east coast.

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer my stuff safely under my roof (with an off-site backup or two!). ;)

Good riddance. Piss poor awful service. I'm sure Apple will be glad to put that disaster behind them.

+1

it was so bad that I ended up completely moving over to Gmail... and getting me off Google's service will be a huge challenge for any cloud services from now on.

Freezing in iphoto

Iphoto asks if I want the folders there, and it will do it automatically. Then it starts - and stops. Any experiences?

----------

I made an iweb-site (several). When I try logging in I meet the shutdown-sign. And is asked if I want to go to iCloud. I do, and I am registered. But where is my stuff? I thought iCloud just was is a new host for iweb-sites? No?

Bye Bye

I never got on with iDisk, but I already miss the web thingie. I web was simple to use and convenient.

I also miss the support for my Core Duo MBP - Grrrrr, Cant upgrade to Lion or ML so cant use iCloud!

Apple support staff indicated to him that as of the end of the day today Apple will begin shutting down those accounts that have not been migrated, beginning the process of opening those user names up to new users registering for iCloud.

This somewhat confuses me.

I have two Apple IDs, one being an old MobileMe account that I abandoned when the main alias began getting bombarded with spam. Apple were kind enough to help me set up a second MobileMe account and transfer my subscription across.

At the time, I'd already purchased apps and other media through this account (I had no yet thought of having two separate accounts). At present, with Apple offering no means of combining two IDs and merging past purchases, so I have to Apple IDs with content on.

If Apple are "opening those user names" to new users; and my old MobileMe account's ID is fixed at my old email address. What happens there?

Will my Apple ID be erased and content with it?
Will my username remain from use by others?

*confused*

How much did they pay for me.com again?
I bet the previous owners are glad they sold when they had the chance.

Basically what will happen is what happened to those of us with @mac when they switched to @me.

They're opening up the new @icloud email address, but if someone already has the @me address, it won't be available as it will already belong to the person with the @me address.

You'll find that you'll be able to log into iTunes Store with your @me or @icloud now. They will essentially be interchangeable.

Ie. john@me.com, john@mac.com, john@icloud.com will all end up in your one inbox and you'll be able to use it to log into your iTunes account.

I got and E-mail

yesterday I got an e-mail 'Get set up and start enjoying MobileMe today' about joining mobile me. Really strange.

MobileMe

I've had MobileMe since the day they released it, I've always had a good experience with MobileMe! I like iCloud and I've been enjoying the service just as well. I rarely used iDisk, I really liked Gallery. However I think iCloud will be everything and more! I'm just really waiting for iOS 6, it's going to be awesome:cool::apple::apple::apple:

I'm lucky. I never used the apple mail accounts as my ID. I've had a netzero account for 20 years and pay $11 a year to keep it without the internet service. Now if something were to happen to Netzero, I would cry me a river.

MobileMe now joins the G4 Cube, the Puck Mouse, and the Newton in the depths of the Apple Underworld. Bye, bye! We won't miss you.

Next up on the list: Ping!

Meh, I wouldn't put the above in the same category as Ping! - the others were innovative or cool ideas but Ping! quite frankly just sucks and doesn't serve as a solution to any problem either now or into the future.

iCloud offers most of what MobileMe did. And some stuff it didn't. For $99 less. In other words, for free.
Not free.
Mobile Me was paid for via $99 a year.
iCloud is subsidised through the Apple hardware you purchase.

So you are paying for both.

yes another downgrade by apple

for me...

icloud doesn't run on my 8-core mac pro as apple have deemed my machine too old and obsolete. im one of probably 100's of thousands of users left stranded now mountain lion has arrived.. the correct way of integrating the mobile me > icloud transition should have included lion support for icloud then many more user would have had access to the new "replacement" services

mobile me had iweb and web hosting, a fully functional storage solution in idisk

icloud has a hopeless storage structure, documents are stored on a per app basis so i cant open a text edit file in preview etc etc and only native apple docs are supported so hamstrung from the start
it also offers a hopeless file structure of ONE level of "folders" no right click support and you cant create "folders" without more than one file to drag onto itself... this interface doesn't belong on a desktop or workstation environment

https://www.facebook.com/AppleBringMountainLionSupportToEarlyMacPros

and how difficult would it be to bring some sort of gallery to icloud ? i really can't believe that anyone thought this is an upgrade ?

Good riddance. Piss poor awful service. I'm sure Apple will be glad to put that disaster behind them.

While I agree that the service was bad, I would argue that Apple still has a disaster in front of them. There is a lot of discussion among different database developers (e.g. BareBones - YoJimbo; Devon tech - DevonThink) on just how difficult it has been to get their products working with iCloud. You can see a pretty lively discussion on their Google support forum about the disappointment of customers of YoJimbo after BareBones said they would have a new version that would sync across iCloud prior to the MobileMe sunset date only to have to pull back on their promise and leave a lot of folks blowing in the wind. I don't think the blame rests entirely with the developers. They are busting their butts and have been for some time to get this to work. I think Apple moved the goal posts and left a lot of good applications in the cold when it comes to using iCloud successfully to support syncing of their products across multiple devices.

I have received complaints that the .mac ending of email addresses has been changed to .me which I find puzzling. (The #1 complainant has used the .mac address for quite a few years and is not looking forward to having to get the new address spread around.)

Can anyone shed some light on this?

TIA

By mobile me. I was one of the few who liked your service.

iCloud will be great. Apple will put 100% into it. I look forward to more additions.

OK, so iCloud is not just some thing that Apple doesn't' have to pay for with its own money. Granted.

However, whether you were using MobileMe or iCloud, you still had to pay for whatever devices you were using.

In this way, I think of iCloud as free for the user, but not free for Apple, since they have to take some of the revenue earned from device-selling and use it for iCloud R&D, design, data center operation, etc.

...The correct way of integrating the MobileMe > iCloud transition should have included Lion support for iCloud...
Check the list of compatible OSes. Lion is clearly listed as one of such OSes.
...MobileMe had iWeb and Web hosting...
While unfourtnuate, I have seen a grand total of one site that was made using iWeb and published with MobileMe. Many Web site designing apps have a larger feature set than iWeb anyway, and many Web publishers have MobileMe transition programs.
... [a] fully functional storage solution in iDisk...
Dropbox, Google Drive, SugarSync, etc.
...iCloud has a hopeless storage structure, documents are stored on a per app basis so i can't open a TextEdit file in Preview, etc...
  1. Open TextEdit
  2. Open Preview
  3. Drag the TextEdit file from iCloud onto the Preview dock icon
  4. Marvel in its glory
...only native Apple docs are supported so hamstrung from the start
Yes, from the start. However, am I mistaken in saying that developers can write apps for OS X with Documents in the Cloud, like in iOS?
...it also offers a hopeless file structure of ONE level of "folders"...
A genuine gripe, I agree.
...no right click support...
Absolutely false.
...and you can't create "folders" without more than one file to drag onto itself...
If you really want a folder with one item in it (which I don't understand), create a dummy file, drag it onto the actual file, and delete the dummy file. Inelegant, but so is a folder with one file in it.
...and how difficult would it be to bring some sort of gallery to iCloud?
iCloud Journals, perhaps?

So I just tested that, sent myself an email to my username@icloud.com and it bounced back as not a valid email address. I have the same problem with myusername@mac.com that is no longer working.

Not sure why yours is not working.Ijust logged into icloud.com, launched MAIL and sent my self a test email @icloud.com.It was delivered

Have you converted?"officially" to the cloud?
I can;t recall what the process is but I think you have to do something to migrate your Mobile Me stuff, including accounts, to iCloud.

Another neat thing I discovered. Mail in the cloud keeps track of all my email addresses including the gosh darn complicated ones whic Evernote and similar services provide (which I can never remember to email something to those storage or archival sites). That is a really welcome feature!

...

But while the MobileMe services went offline as of that date, the company has continued to allow MobileMe users to migrate their accounts to iCloud and to download Gallery photos and iDisk files "for a limited time".

It now appears that the "limited time" is rapidly running out, and users who have yet to save their MobileMe data and/or convert their accounts to iCloud need to move quickly to ensure that they do not lose their data and registered user names. As noted by Ben Guild, Apple support staff indicated to him that as of the end of the day today Apple will begin shutting down those accounts that have not been migrated, beginning the process of opening those user names up to new users registering for iCloud.

I migrated my MobileMe account to iCloud a long time ago. However, I have been unable to access my iDisk. Am I missing something? Are these files only accessible by people that have yet to migrate to iCloud?

If anyone knows of a way to access iDisk let me know.
