Because the primary structure was already designed to fit a camera. There's a hole here, for heaven's sake.

So because it's possible to do something, then one MUST do it?

Odd logic.

What would this have done to the price point of the unit? What would this have done to battery life?

I'm sure apple will have some type of camera for first gen ipads, why apple would bring out an all new iPad with a camera when they just brought out the first gen ipads, and not at least try to make some money of first gen iPad customers Is beyond me!!

Which is why they won't do it. The product revision will not be less than twelve months.

As for couch surfing using an iPad... yuck, no thanks. I need to type in stuff and the iPad on a couch is about the worse form factor to do that. Gaming ? On the laptop, much better. On the go ? iPhone, again, portability is king.

many, many people - including myself - use this for couch surfing. If you find it uncomfortable to do so, then you must be doing something wrong. The experience is comfortable, fluid and for me it's exactly what I wanted.

Likewise, i prefer gaming on the pad to the phone, portability isn't an issue. I wouldn't play a game on the move anyway, but hotel rooms, at home, in the office - perfect.

I prefer gamin on the pad to my laptop, so who are you to say that one is 'better' than the other? Don't confuse your personal opinion with statements of fact.

What would this have done to battery life?

Absolutely nothing when the camera isn't in use. God I hate this dumb argument.

You know what would be great for battery life ? Turning off the device, and storing it in an old closet, forgetting it ever existed. Everything else will drain the battery.

That was one of the obvious uses for the iPad from the very beginning. The camera's omission on the original iPad is classic Jobs screwing the customers MO and why I didn't buy one yet.

You've obviously never used on. A camera on this thing for any form on lap/handheld facetime use would be an ergonomic nightmare.

Introducing new features with product revisions is sound business and marketing sense, it's not some evil scheme dreamed up by Apple.

OK - so maybe the thing should have two usb ports, a FW400 port, a FW800 port, sound in and out sockets, an SD card slot, a micro SD slot, A front facing and rear facing camera, and then maybe a keyboard hinged to one side of the screen. Oh wait, they already make those, they're called laptop computers...

How would these additions affect battery life, price point, weight and form factor of the unit? how hot would the product have been when sat in your lap? would it then need a cooling fan?

I even hear some here complaining about the screen resolution. 1024 x 768 was the standard on most 15" and 17" monitors less than a few years ago, and this on a 10" form factor. The display is beautiful.

All the 'experts' here really are no such thing. Apple's sales figures and the feedback from the vast majority of iPad owners prove all the naysayers and critics wrong.

Your logic is flawed - and you miss my point - you have no idea why Apple didn't ship this device with a camera, and you cling to the notion that there is some underhand motivartion. There could have been any number of technical reasons which you do not know about.

It doesn't matter what Apple had left off, they'd have come in for criticism. If the rev a had shipped with a camera, this debate would be all about the lack of USB.

No USB, No audio ports, No Firewire? Yes, because it's a wireless, lightweight, portable device.

The form factor does not lend itself in ANY WAY to being a camera, and without a desk stand of some sort it's no use for faceTime, by which point you might as well use your macbook/iMac. If you don't want one, don't buy one.

If you feel that this thing suddenly having a camera will make it your perfect device, then buy away if/when one is added.

Uh ? When did I ever say there was an underhanded motive or clinging to a notion that there was ? I don't think I even ever commented on the lack of camera in the iPad, except to say that at a 10" form factor, it wouldn't really work as a camera for photography work.

Put down the coffee there, you seem to be over-emotional or something and confused.

It's nice though that you agreed with me that the battery argument was dumb, since I see you didn't even try to justify any reasons for claiming "Oh noes battery drain!". Let's put that stupid argument to rest. Omitting features "because they would drain the battery" is none-sensical since anything the device does drains the battery in the first place.

That was the only point of my comment, to point out that the battery argument is a non-argument. Don't want to drain the battery with a camera ? Don't use the frigging camera. It's not a good reason to omit the hardware though.

And I'll never buy an iPad. Useless to me.

Apple updates their products way too much.
Its great that technology takes a step ahead each year, but sometimes I get a feeling they cripple products on purpose now, so in the future they add more features just to sell it as "2nd generation" .

For example, what made Apple unable to add facetime, Retina display, or anything more on the current iPad?

If facetime is all they will add, then no worries. But if the new iPad wil be thinner, lighter, faster, with more mhz and RAM . I think a lot of people will be upset.

Apple should at least make their products last 2 years, or make them upgradable.

2 years? Please, they'd be left in the dust by the competition. 6 months to a year is fair and logical, if you can't see the need for that way of doing business in a fast-paced & competitive marketplace than you'd better stick to low tech devices or be prepared to be constantly disappointed.

Well, it's obvious its getting a FaceTime camera. Also obvious that it will get 512MB RAM: the current model is seriously getting into troubles once 4.2 gets here...

Remember the PPC days? Most said Apple did not update their products enough. Now it's the opposite.

Once a year seems reasonable to me considering the speed of component technology development.

Given the economies of scale, in my opinion I expect the following:

Is this for iPad 2 or what? Anyway let me be your judge:

1) A "retina display" quality IPS LCD touchscreen, with resolution as high as 1600x900.

No. First, the next iPad will simply not get that much an update. The screen is iPad's most praised feature, so they will simply not bother (but yes, I want higher res too!) Second, while the resolution is at least more realistic than the 4000x3000 folks wanting super-high PPI, you run into problems with upscaling all the current iPad apps. And that's why higher resolution seems highly unlikely: If you just bump up resolution slightly, apps won't scale and it will be a compatibily nightmare. If you double the resolution so scaling is easier, well, resolution is way too high for the current technology. The answer? It's a downer, but the resolution stays the same for quite a while.

2) More memory, probably 512 MB to 1 GB RAM and up to 128 GB flash memory.

You're moving a little too fast IMO. Yes, 1 GB RAM would be awesome. Will it happen? Doubt it. 512 seems very standard for the next iPad, then 1 GB for iPad 3. 128 GB flash is a possibility though. Personally I think Apple will just keep the current storing options. Remember, Apple is not forced to do much here. Competition is very thin, and iPad is selling well.

3) A much faster A4 CPU (possibly as high as 1.5 GHz clock speed) or a new dual-core derivative of the A4.

Higher clockspeed, maybe. A new CPU or dual-core I very much doubt. What are you basing this on? The thing here is, you expect higher resolution, and yes, then the iPad should be faster. But like i explained this is extremely unlikely in the near future. So, the A4 processor is good enough for now too.

4) A much faster PowerVR GPU that can decode 720p video at full resolution.

I think updated GPU is more likely than a new CPU, but these things are on the same chip right? I know little about this stuff, but I don't exept hardware changes either way. If 720p video can be implemented with software coding, sure.

5) Cellular-enabled versions to offer your choice of GSM (AT&T and cellphone carriers overseas that use GSM) or CDMA/LTE (Verizon/Sprint) support.

No. Making iPad a phone will be bad marketing, seriously. Really don't see this happening, and at this point I think you're wishing more than you'e expecting.

6) Will add the same cameras found on the 4G iPod touch.

Yes. This is the only thing on your list that actually seems likely, along with 512 MB RAM. Not sure about back-camera for video, however. I think it will just be a front-facing camera.

You wrote nothing about pysical changes in build. Personally, I think the possibility of slightly alterned looks of the iPad - perhaps thinner, possibly less bezel, somewhat lighter etc - is much bigger than new CPU and high-res display.

I'm guessing Facetime camera + 512 MB RAM + maybe lighter/thinner device or a modest design change. Nothing else.

Sorry bud, but you forgot to mention that the battery would also need to be removed from the unit, otherwise it will still drain. :D

people without ipads and who ar complaining. stay out of this you have not authority and no experience in this matter.

So once again early adopters get shafted...

If anyone was 'shafted', it was when the original iPad was released without a camera, not when a new iPad is released with one. ;)

The iPad got a lot of criticism for not having one initially, as people recognised just this opportunity. But that's how companies operate - don't sell a product with Feature X, if it'll sell like hotcakes without Feature X. Sadly, for the consumer.

If Apple made cars:
- Sell a new, sexy, simple to drive car.
- In version 2, add a radio.
- In version 3, take away the radio, add air conditioning.
- In version 4, add the radio AND air conditioning.
- In version 5, create a new look. Take away the radio and the air-conditioning.

:p

I've never regretted buying my iPad on day one and I certainly don't now. I'll still end up buying the next gen version, but it likely will have little to do with the camera. Facetime doesn't do much for me at all to be honest. I barely use it.

In any event, I will have gotten around a great year of use out of the thing by the time the new versions surface, and it's been a wonderful year. I've never been more productive and that's largely thanks to the iPad integrating into my life in ways that have far surpassed my most lofty expectations.

Count me among the happy early adopters. I'll sell this one when the new one drops and when all is said and done, I'll have spent about $12-15 a month essentially leasing an iPad for a year. Thinking about that in the context of other day to day indulgences and then considering how much more productive I've become with an iPad, I'd say that I'm utterly and completely thrilled with my purchase.

I don't think Retina Display is coming to the iPad for at least a few years. They need to change the processor in order for the system to handle such a definition. The camera is already a big enough of an upgrade, specially if they change the RAM to 512Mb.

The ipad would have close to the the same # of pixels as the 27" imac which would definitely require a faster processor and more memory.

I'd be all for them doing that, and if anyone could it would be apple. Just don't think they will do it so soon.
