Apple Recalls 1.3 Million Batteries

News.com is reporting that Apple has issued a recall for 1.8 million PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries that used technology from Sony. Batteries with the Sony technology (used in Apple, Dell, and Sony laptops, among others) have recently been catching fire, with Dell recently recalling 4.1 million batteries.

The recall affects a variety of machines manufactured from October 2003 and August 2006, but does not affect the MacBook or the MacBook Pro, as they contain different battery technology. Yesterday, Apple announced that it would be joining Dell and Lenovo in creating Li-Ion standards.

More information can be found on the battery recall's site.

Update: News.com had multiple errors in their original post. The number of recalled batteries is 1.8 million (not 1.3 million), and we have since corrected the battery recall site's link.

Affected models include:

• 12-inch iBook G4, Model #A1061, Serial #s: 3K429 through 3K611, 6C510 through 6C626
• 12-inch PowerBook G4, Model #A1079, Serial #s: ZZ411 through ZZ427, 3K428 through 3K611, 3K425 through 3K601
• 15-inch PowerBook G4, Model #A1078 and A1148, Serial Numbers: 6N530 through 6N551, 6N601

ETA: Deleted my first post, as there is now an updated Apple link. :p

I'll have to check my iBook tonight, to see if I have one of the batteries. I'm guessing I do; I purchased my iBook in February 2004, and am still using the original battery. Oh well; it was ready for a new battery, anyway.

twofaced CNN

know what i find disturbing. this gets front page on cnn.com with a big picture and gloom and doom headline while dell gets a... oh by the way... dell recalled 4.1 million a few weekes ago but greased our palms so we wouldnt make a big stink about it. seems like a damn vendetta to me.

Apple web site.

The link to the battery recall is changing. I've got at least 2 printout that do not match up! First time the link took me to Depot.Info and then the last time it took me to Support.apple.com. These links are slightly different.

Can Sony do anything right these days?

Is it 1.1, 1.3 or 1.8 million laptop batteries?

I am glad to see someone else is a little confused and it wasn't just me. I have seen the 1.1 and 1.8, but not the 1.3 million batteries. I just want to know which number it really is.

From engadget

"Apple has just recalled 1.8 million iBook and PowerBook laptop batteries, 1.1 million of those in the US and 700,000 abroad"

Ridiculous that Apple would let this story post and NOT have it's site already configured to handle the inquries.

Yeah - I think that's really odd. In this situation...any company would want to be seen not only to be the source of said info but also be ready with the official response and instructions...

unless it was leaked many hours ahead of apple... or is a bogus story altogether - the latter is unlikely though

*ding* I'm a winner!

*kablam*

Now might also be a good time to say, I picked up this story about 25 minutes ago!

(I've been playing with WordPress all day... please, just give me some comments, yeah?) :p

Will have to check the wife's iBook, my PB and the spare battery I bought for it. Would be nice if all three were replaced!

It's a bad year for Sony as they are going to be paying out the nose for the replacements. Apple will probably send the replacements overnight - adding to Sony's misery.

For even more Sony misery - they might be joining the party:
