Let me get this straight:

So Apple wants to build one of the nicest, environmentally-integrative, energy-efficient, modernly-designed, attractive offices in the country, will provide thousands of construction jobs during the years it builds it, has assured tens of thousands of permanent jobs in the area following completion, is going to do additional work to make the surrounding city area nicer and more accommodating, already has overwhelming public approval to do this, and they are willing to do it in one of the most business-unfriendly states, in an already way-overpriced area to live (the bay area), just because they want to stay local, and the city of Cupertino is like,

"Yeah, we'll only approve it if you agree to pay us more."

Apple should have told these greedy government money-flushers to piss off, that the primary reason they have any interest in Cupertino was because Jobs couldn't see past his doorstep but that they see things more practically, and that any other city would be thrilled to accept their plan for a class-of-its-own office with city improvements and a boost to both temporary and long-term employment without a tax hit.

This confirms one thing: Tim Cook sucks at negotiating.

Or maybe cook feels he has an obligation to support the community schools, libraries, infrastructure.......It's not like taxes are collected to piss off people. It's because some people realize that there are things that only governments can provide.

Now we will have two years of construction guys sitting around looking at a huge hole they dug in the ground. And then overnight the building will pop up and that's it. It'll be a typical construction effort.

not impressed

millions of bucks and all that design and yet no-one's thinking about how to defend it from the zombie hoards. all those curved glass windows and no-where to retreat into except the donut hole. doh!

All i see is the middle of it filled with cash that Tim and Johnny can swim in

Since when did company offices start being called a campus!?

It's similar to a University campus. If it's just a building, it'll be referred to as office. If there's an office building, plus a park, outdoor eating areas, multiple buildings, cafes, etc.. etc.., there's more of a liberty to call it a campus.

I am horrified that one of the biggest companies in the world was getting 50% sales tax back from Cupertino.

Apple retail outlets should inform the customer that 50% of the "TAX" actually ended up a revenue for Apple. It would be interesting to see the customers thoughts on that.

Corps getting any slice of tax revenues is just wrong - shame on Apple.

Nebs

That isn't how this works. It if for sales taxes apple pays for supplies, furniture, construction materials for a new campus, etc. It always amazes me how opinionated people are about tax policy without knowing how taxes work...

Also, you've totally neglected all of the benefits to Apple by being in the Bay Area. Sure, they could relocate to Reno or Albuquerque or wherever, but good luck attracting top-class talent.

Funny, I would have thought that top-class talent would be more interested in working for Apple than limiting themselves to the Bay Area.

You mean like Depression-era migrant workers? Going and living wherever they need to go to get a job?

Apple's employees are not slaves: they have time away from work, families, etc. If Apple were to relocate to some inconveniently-placed tax haven with poor infrastructure, its employees would not follow.

Many of them would rather (reluctantly) change their jobs than uproot their families to live in the middle of the desert because it saves their company some money.
