And Mac Pro's are affiliated with Apple receiving Permits to Test self driving cars? You do know Apple has more than one Department that works on various projects within the Company?
Don't waste your breath explaining this. A lot of people who post here and on other forums seem to think that Apple is still two men and a dog in a garage bashing out tin themselves. They clearly aren't but they don't seem to think that a company the size of Apple could design two widgets at the same time.
Anyone who has worked for a large multi-national computer company (I did for 20 years) would know that many system design projects are being worked upon all over the world at the same time.

Watch the video, it actually shows the Apple user as being pretty snooty and hating Android far more than vice versa. But hey, believe whatever you like to.

Why should I watch a video if it starts that way in the first few seconds, to me they start off being biased, if the video progresses in a different way then they should have cut it in different way.
I ask you, if you go to the movies and the first 5 minutes are really crap, would you stay put?

Apple Maps works here and in many other places, plenty of people say it works the same if not better than others.

The problem here is that Apple was much smaller before yet released "10 times" more than now, that it seems to me is why people complain.

Apple has not abandoned the car game.

Not to mention that Apple can dev products in several nations.

They have lost focus on product to a degree in some areas and more focused on profit in others.

How about side tracking this and fast tracking the new Mac Pro :D
It will take some time to dev a new Mac Pro. Apple may have several design studies but it cannot be done overnight. I see no issue with looking out at the car industry to move forward.

I hope they don't use Google. In my area (Northern Italy) they sent me into no man's land several times, and I completely gave up and disinstalled the app. Apple Maps are way better.

I think it depends on location. In the US, I would trust Google Maps over Apple Maps. In the US Virgin Islands, Apple Maps did better than Google, but not by much. Google couldn't get me anywhere near the airport, but Apple Maps did, although it was the opposite side.

Well, Apple Maps did have me drive through some crazy/scary places in the mountains, with dead ends, and one lane roads, so maybe I might just consider them even with Google Maps.

Yea, it is not like they had since before 2013 to start working on a new design. /s

Applying for a permit can be viewed similarly as applying for a patent. Even though the paperwork has been submitted, that doesn't mean anything tangible will come from it.

Still broken.

Both of them have their share of issues, Google Maps once tried to have me loop around the same intersection for about 5 minutes. Another time I used Google Maps to get to a concert, but the navigation ended in the middle of the highway. I had to continue on the southern express parkway for 10 miles and loop back on the northern parkway for another 10 miles.Google Maps is still better, but it's been around for a lot longer.

5 minutes? Yeah, LOL.

So you watch a few seconds and youre basing the whole video off that?

LMAO, Apple's Maps is such junk. Notice how the guy's only response is that Apple's Carplay 'looks pretty' ?? LOL, typical Apple consumer. Looks pretty, but it's junk.

Glad I'm on Android, Google Maps has been amazing getting through traffic jams and such.

If you're on Android, how do you know "Apple's Maps is such junk"?

BUSTED!

I hope it's not using Apple Maps for directions.
Or Siri for taking instructions. Siri is so boneheaded it causes physical damage even without any vehicles involved, just from all the users banging their heads into various hard objects in frustration.

Actually, the video accurately mirrors my last experience with Apple Maps. For some reason that Apple still hasn't fixed, it fails to take into consideration geolocation to provide search results closest to GPS position. My last experience with Apple Maps it failed to provide directions to a known landmark near LAX airport and, instead, directed me to Northern California. Other issue is Siri hasn't progressed over the years and might even be worse. There's a whole Reddit forum dedicated to Siri fails but passes if you use Google Search iOS app.

Macs are part of a $25 billion division that's not going to grow much more than that.

Apple is gunning for something where the money is. As much I love Macs and MacOS, I know that the big money isn't going to be in desktop computers. It is going to be in the technologies of the next 50 years, including space exploration and space mining even.

I am excited to see what Apple has come up with but I'm worried about the price. Judging by their electronics and products the car will be out of almost everyone's budget but I hope not! I'd definitely try one if I had the cash!

Edit: read the article, if not a full blown car I'm still interested!

At least now we know what Mike's been up to.

No wonder the hardware hasn't been updated in ages , he's busy with this ....

An article at Cnet provides a few more details. Apple's DMV permit covers three modified Lexus RX450h, the same model that Google/Waymo has been using for some of its test vehicles. Not sure how reliable that bit of information is.

Says the Macrumors regular Android guy who is known for bashing every new thing Apple releases without even trying. Serious question... If you don't like Apple, its management, its products, and not interested in buying any future Apple products, why are you even here?

As a side note, I recently stopped using Google Maps since Apple Maps is a lot more accurate in my area. I'm not saying that's the case in every country, but they are certainly improving their maps really fast. Even if they weren't, I would still try using the app that wouldn't track and record everything I do.

This gets too old, Maps improved so much that it's on par with others.

No, it's not.

I live 2 miles away from Apple in Silicon Valley. Apple maps still puts my destination on the wrong side of the road, and when it can't find the exact location it stops me two blocks away. I love Apple products, but google maps is still my go-to as I'm confident it will get me to where I want to go.

Because I really like OS X, hence the Hackintosh. Duh?

Question: If Apple made a perfect clone of the Tesla Model 3 and both were available today at the same price, which would you buy?

The only pro I see with Apple is it'd have better integration with the iPhone (because Tesla just doesn't seem to give a crap about CarPlay). I'd go with Tesla - they have 13 years of experience making EVs and 9 years of experience selling and maintaining EVs while Apple has virtually none. Plus Tesla has the supercharger network... although I could see Apple being willing to enter into a partnership with Tesla to allow their customers to use the network, much like iPhone users can use the AT&T network.

If it is a clone, then it doesn't matter what you buy. But these cars are all going to be very different with many different strengths and weaknesses. They won't be like current cars which are nearly identical at the mass production level.

One of Apple's advantages is its custom CPUs. They are powerful and low power. The scanning and computation necessary for the car to self drive is apparently massive and gets into serious computing territory. However big computers use a lot of electricity. Apple might be able to go multi-core with custom low power CPUs and have a serious computation advantage over other car makers. Also you have to give the edge to Apple in the software writing department over Tesla, right? Finally there is design, attention to detail and supply chain management skills that Apple has. Apple might be able to make a very compelling self driving car.
