In the mean time, I still have an Apple TV 4 (9 years), Airport Express Nv1 (16 years), and an iPod (3rd gen) running just wonderfully.
I wonder how popular the X was? I work in a fairly affluent job and only know one person I know bought it. Everyone had the 8 Plus. I didn't see them out and about very often.
You can get them fixed. See in this thread.Frankly I'd sell HomePods while you still can
They are ticking time bombs before something breaks
That's sad. The OG is awesome. Never heard the Gen 2's.There is no competition between the HomePod 1 and HomePod 2 when it comes to audio quality. It is one of the best speakers you can get for the price.
Sure I've had a problem or two over the 7 years, but sh*tshow? That's a bit extreme. The OG HomePods have been an absolute sh*tshow in terms of software/firmware. 7 years, endless updates, and they never got it right. Pathetic from Apple- especially useless Siri, that somehow got even worse as time progressed.
Mine have been endlessly problematic. Skipping during songs (always around the 14 second mark), struggling with 5 different routers, Siri being retarded, the pair falling out of synch, synching very badly with iPhone and Mac, volume levels fluctuating when paired etc etc. I've posted about these issues in depth on these forums over the years.Sure I've had a problem or two over the 7 years, but sh*tshow? Come on lets face it, When did killing support for a product you designed, built and sold become acceptable at any age?7 years for a speaker is a rather short life. Not so much for a cell phone but Apple really needs to start thinking about the lifetime of their non-mobile products. I know it's not going to stop working right away, but still
I've not known someone to 'upgrade' from the OG HomePods to the HomePod 2s before, which isnt so surprisingly to me considering in some ways they're a downgrade. May I ask why?I just sold two OG HomePods on ebay and have one left to sell. I hope this announcement doesn't kill my sale.
Upgraded 3 (in three different homes) when Verizon had HomePod 2's on fire sale about a month ago.
It’s been that long since the iPhone X? I remember standing in a line for 2 hours just to get one and as soon as I got it they told me it was the last in stock. Man, I’m old.
While I absolutely agree with you on Siri, sorry to hear about your other issues. After my own experiences with other products, I don't doubt your troubles.Mine have been endlessly problematic. To my understanding the OG HomePods have iPhone 6 components in them. By Apple now listing them as "Vintage" they likely wont be receiving upcoming major iOS revisions. They'll likely stay on iOS 17 moving forward. This wont render them useless, but will make them less useful moving forward depending on what iOS18 (and on) features they wont get.I've not known someone to 'upgrade' from the OG HomePods to the HomePod 2s before, which isnt so surprisingly to me considering in some ways they're a downgrade. I've been completely burnt on the HomePods so wouldn't upgrade even if they released new ones with non-moronic Siri. I'd go as far as to say I would only buy dumb, wired speakers from now on...
We'll have to see what improvements future updates bring. The HP2 has a weaker processor, fewer internal speakers, fewer microphones, and lower specced WiFi chip.To my understanding the OG HomePods have iPhone 6 components in them. Your experience with smart speakers isn't our experience and its ok to not understand why someone chooses to do something you wouldn't.
The final OG HomePod just sold about 5 minutes ago so it will be off to its new owner tomorrow. In the end for each of the three households it cost about $50 to upgrade from OG to 2nd gen since Verizon had them on fire sale about a month ago. I only wish I had bought two more. Maybe they'll go on sale again sometime soon.
same as iPad, iPad Pro has better hardware than iPad 7th gen, yet iPad Pro support is being dropped.7 years for a speaker is a rather short life. His point was that speakers historically lasted waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay longer than any tablet or phone or computer ever has, hence how we would expect them to get at least a few years more support than an iPad.same as iPad, iPad Pro has better hardware than iPad 7th gen, yet iPad Pro support is being dropped.

It sadly does mean they'll never fix the current awful incarnation of Siri, though...Well it's only a classification. Doesn't mean it won't carry on working in the same way for years. .
Ok but all joking aside, some kind of old timey gramophone base to set the HomePod on would actually be a fun accessory! If you launch a kickstarter campaign for such a novelty then I promise I'll be among the first to contribute to it
Good point, even Alexa device owners have this worry any smart speaker (such as Dumb speakersI hate the idea that my speaker would stop working because the software ages out. I don't think Apple will do that, but it's always a risk.
So, the OG HomePod won't receive any updates anymore I guess.
That's a bummer.
Will the original HomePod get the audioOS update this fall?
Agreed. A 3.5mm jack and/or a USB-C port would have much improved the device. If I could have found a way to entirely bypass all elements of its flawed wireless connectivity I certainly would have at times, when they were misbehaving. Those features would also have offered us more standard speaker longevity.wish it had audio-in jack.
