Oh it's a steal alright, a steal of your money. Apple really needs to charge a whole whopping dollar just to give you 50 gigs? You have services like Flickr that gives 1 terabyte of storage for FREE. Granted it's only for photos and videos, but still.
One dollar a month is not a lot of money, in my opinion. It may be too pricey for you but, for many people, it will fit nicely with their current needs.

There is a lot of entitlement attitude in this thread. And in my opinion, that is more of a problem than the previous pricing scale. Apple doesn't owe us anything. Once people stop expecting free at someone else's expense, perspective comes back into focus.

I don't understand how you call it entitlement. It's merely people complaining that nearly all other companies/competitors that offer such cloud storage do so for much less.

Reiterating some of the existing comments...
1. When does the new pricing/storage allocations go live? Not in NZ yet
2. When will they bring in a family plan for iCloud storage allocation?
3. The free storage should be increased from 5GB to 10GB per account as a minimum.
4. It is still expensive if you plan on using it like DropBox, OneDrive, Box etc...

It is definitely a conundrum. One one hand I question the upsell tactics that Apple uses. 5gb free iCloud is miserly, and so I feel compelled to kick in a buck every month. Even more egregious is the device storage upsell to move past the 'starting at' 16gb pricing.
And on the other hand the cloud storage offered by Yahoo, Microsoft, and Google is enticing so I ask myself what is the true cost. Those companies have stakeholders and are not known to be ran as charities. So if I'm not paying for storage, what exactly of value am I exchanging? They aren't so transparent about that.

When will they allow us to purchase iCloud storage to share across a family plan!?

I was really hoping for this as well. This is also the main reason why I'm slowly moving away from Dropbox as well (for photo sharing/backup purpose). Giving that Onedrive is giving $100 for five account of 1TB, It's great for the family.

I'm going to hold off on this for a little bit ONLY because I currently have the 20GB plan at 10.99 a year. I was a paying member when it was 20GB for $19.99 a year, and when they went to the monthly plans, they dropped me down to this price. I'm just going to hold off a bit to see if they do the same thing and/or make it so that its 10.99 a year for 50GB for existing members.

Financially, maybe.

Even though 99 cents is nothing, I still balk at upgrading my memory because I feel it's an insult, I haven't backup up my iPhone in months lol. With competitors offering MUCH more free storage, and with Apple's immense profit margins on hardware I just find it hard to believe (well not really) that they want to chisel another 99cents/month out of me. For gods sake take care of your loyal consumers and give them 20gb like everyone else does.
Why backup to the cloud?

Backing up to iTunes over WiFi is as simple as eating a cake.
Also you don't put ALL OF YOUR PERSONAL DATA on a server.
I understand that for US-Americans that might not be much of an issue, but many parts in the remaining world don't take quite so kindly to that idea.
That's why Apple can suggest me to use iCloud over using a higher capacity iPhone all they want, it's not gonna happen.
That and that you're always dependent on internet connectivity.
Or data caps. Or paying to keep the files alive. And you can't install an app to iCloud. (it seems they want to get into this with the Apple TV, great, more reason to stick to low base models and ask for cloud money...)

I digress sorry, iCloud storage is different from backups, but I love me some tangents. :D

This is such perfect timing. I literally just received an email this afternoon saying I've used 19.9 of my 20GB plan. Thanks for the free bump, Uncle Timmy!

I use and love iCloud so this is a nice reduction. Maybe love is too strong of a verb. But the auto backup and photo library in iCloud are just superb.

It should be free for 50GB and $5.99 per month for 1TB.

All those different plans are messy and confusing. Clean this crap up Phil. It's like the iPad lineup. I wish there were less options. 5 iPads, 3 colours, 3 storage choices. You could spend a week trying to device what you wanted.

Ugh, I'd rather not have to install iTunes onto my PC. I never understood the concept of iTunes in 2015. Things like having to download iTunes to download an app instead off of a website like Android frustrate me to no end.

I agree with you on backing up personal data though, it's an excellent point. I don't really care about backing up anyhow. My contacts, pictures, calendar, email, etch is all on the cloud or backed up through Microsoft, Google, etc so backing up my iPhone is purely for convenience if I have to switch IPhones or if I get a new one.

I'm not bothered by a dollar as most products from Apple cost a lot. From them, this is a steal.

Ugh.. The prices are getting better, but there is a huge limitation that keeps me from using cloud storage: my ISPs data caps.

Google and Microsoft are offering 15GB free, but would you trust either with your personal files? Most other similar services provide 5GB or less at their free tier.

Also, don't forget you can use iTunes credit to purchase iCloud upgrades (and many other things, like Apple Music subscriptions), and iTunes cards can often be bought for 20-25% off their face value. 50GB for $0.74/month is a pittance.

If I remember correctly from a previous discussion Google certainly should not be trusted. But I believe MS is in the interest of selling the service (they actually want to make money by selling service, not Ad or your data), so I think their privacy statement is much different than that of Google.

It's telling how moribund iCloud adoption is. When has Apple reduced prices on a service?

This kind of storage is akin to subscription, but more closely to rent. I don't mind having hard drives filled with amassed data I may never actually look through but rarely on occasion. It costs nothing more with each passing day.

The physical storage business for people's excess household items saw explosive growth and returns. iCloud and similar are the digital brethren to that kind of rental. Paying loads to hold onto things that probably ought to have been tossed, sold or donated, save for the time it takes to address it.

Notice that, with Apple, the bottom tier of anything always stays at the bottom.

iCloud storage (5 GB)
iPhone storage (16 GB)

This is how they get you to spend more money… by making the more expensive options more attractive.

My iPhone 4 was only 8GB. They increase the bottom teir, just twice as slowly.

I would use iCloud... But I have asymmetrical internet, 100mbps down, only 2mbps up... As is typical in australia on hfc.

You would think that Apple would just make it free though. Really enhances the whole eco system.
