When did it stop being called MacOS?

I'm pretty sure my first iMac shipped with Mac OS 8

Is the rebranding just taking out the space?

In 2012 they dropped the 'Mac' from the name and it became simply OS X.

It seems quite a few years since people stopped associating 'OS X' with 'Mac OS, version 10 point whatever-we're-on-this-year'. Hence the comments asking when OS X 11 might happen.

Seriously though, if OS X is 'replaced' with macOS won't that cause a problem in 2017 with macOS 2.0? (As there as already been Mac OS 2).

While we're at it, why does watchOS get a proper version number (1.0 on release, then 2.0 at WWDC) but the first version of tvOS seem to have been 9.0?

I assume it would be called macOS X (ten, not 'ecks' you animals).

tvOS already existed on the Apple TV, it just wasn't called such. Therefore when it was rebranded, it carried over version numbers.

It's always been inferred that OS-X is MacOS.
Now mind you, the first version of tvOS was a MacOS that was stripped down.
All the Apple OS variants have roots OS X.
Who cares what you call it? Does it matter?

I think it's because tvOS is a branch of iOS, and will probably still continue to get iOS code merged into it.. WatchOS is probably a bit more it's own optimized OS, because of its tiny hardware resources

Yeah could be. But according to Wikipedia, watchOS 2.0 is based on iOS 9 (watchOS 1.0 was based on iOS 8).

I honestly couldn't care less. It's the same OS and it works the same. Come on.

this really. Some of this side stuff is geek war territory. Which they can have internally when released and they see if while Marketing calls this MacOS and OS internals wise its macOS, mac_OS or MacOS used. Marketing to people who don't go ballistic when they see code not coded to some standard (or standard they like...enter the geek war here as I have seen wars over standard and how strict to apply them) MacOS works on an ad imo.

iOS will be the odd one out if they do. Will mobileOS be next?

Not needed really. the iOS covers it as its not an OS for full blown computer. Not trying to start a ipads (IPP especially) aren't real computer thread, we have many of those on these boards.

Its just IOS has historically been used to differentiate from full blown computers and devices not exactly like them. Cisco IOS for example can be complicated. It being stripped down as it were not an indication of less power. its just when you run a router you don't need it able to do everything a computer does. You slap in a router iOS since it only needs to be a router in theory so doesn't need to do anything else. this assuming pure router. inb4 cisco guru's point out to me, the admitted noob, of cisco's switch modules for routers.

Apple didn't think of the iOS first. Its an acronym used years prior for devices not full blown computers the tl;dr.

Just to state that this "california based" naming scheme was a terrible decision and "El Capitan" is by far the worse name an OS can have - a shame, once it's the best one apple released in quite a while.

I don't care, as long as it doesn't continue as 10.11, 10.12, 10.13. They don't make sense decimal places, or as version naming. I see people typing 10.11 as 10.1 because they don't know the difference. Whichever one Apple Wants:
  • macOS 11
  • Macintosh OS 11
  • Mac OS 11

It does make sense with version numbering. With actual numbers in maths, 10.10 and 10.1 are the same, but this isn't the case with software versions.

Even if you think version numbers should work the way as decimals, they don't. OS X isn't alone in having x.9 be followed wth x.10 and then x.11

For the love of Pete. OS X or macOS. Don't rebrand it as MacOS. It follows zero capitalization standards for the brand.

Might as well. OS X means nothing. It survived cats and beaches (sorta) but now it's just a leftover. Capitalization Standards … uhh … hmmm …

So many folks called it... I don't care what they call it, as long as it "just works" and isn't full of cranky bugs and such as the last 3 OS have been.

Seen what happens when you move away from the Big Cat names:p (just kidding. I know there were problems there too.)

It makes sense for them to unify the names.

Since they were meant to go to 11.0 last year, and didn't, they should rebrand and remove the X - so a yes from me.

OH MY GOSH, are we really still having this discussion in 2016?! It is not the decimal system. It is versioning and Apple does it just like everyone else does. Educate yourselves people.

Yeah, it's been a hit with the Romans, and a huge help differentiating between all the people still using earlier systems.

I've called it "MacOS (Insert pretty picture here)" for a long time.

Anyone who went to Kindergarten can read Roman numerals lol

Those would be: "MacOS-Rushed to Market", "MacOS-Sadly Disappointing", and "MacOS-Should Still Be Beta"?

Maybe they could start picking bugs and use their portraits: MacOS Cockroach, MacOS Borer Beetle, MacOS Carpenter Ant, MacOS Bedbug. The Bugs are endless, kind of like the Mac OS these days.

I've never been to kindergarten, but I was born back in MCML, when it was common not to go.

You are clearly too old to be using computers anyway so this doesn't apply to you. May I suggest a nice lawn to stand on and shout from?

Yes, but those ".1" versions usually indicate crappy little upgrades, not major.....

...never mind, maybe they'll get it together in 2016.6 or MMXVII

It was Mac OS X anyway so it makes sense. Maybe they're finally moving away from that.

Well, if you consider Mac to be a pronoun, the capitalization standard they'd be following is English. Don't ask me about iOS. That one's just weird, and should be IOS if they followed English :)
