And yours will stop working when a new version is out because.....

I didn't say my current version would stop working. What I said was that it has to remain current in industry, so therefore the development affects this.

Try reading what I wrote instead of picking on each of my comments and putting words in my mouth.... Jeez.

For those who aren't aware, Randy Ubillos is the guy who led the team that first created Premiere, then he left Adobe and led the team who created what is now FCP. He is not some hack who wandered into Apple circa 2007 fired all the old iMovie people, and made iMovie '08, then had to fix his mistakes after everyone whined. In fact, I suspect iMovie's Cocoa rewrite with '08 was a dry run of sorts for when they inevitably had to do the same for FCP.

BTW, FCP and Color need Cocoa/ProKit UIs, they are the only pro apps left without them. The job postings could just as easily be related to that. IMO, look to Motion for what FCP is going to become UI-wise, and how they will make it more approachable.

And considering AppleInsider has been going down hill lately...

Seriously, I can't abide this. I'm a professional editor, and this is endangering my future. Time to get Avid certified. I have Premiere too, but I just don't care for it. FCP's interface is PERFECT. Make it 64-bit and multi-threaded, and I'll be a happy camper.

What he said. And bring compressor and DVD Studio pro into the 21st century. I don't want an interface overhaul. I want an under the hood usability overhaul. Tiem to check out Avid again.

I know apple would never do this (they love their simple product lines), but it almost seems like they should consider a 3-level approach to their applications. The iLife series, something in between, and the 'Pro' series.

that may be what they are doing. FCE is barely any better than imovie and the interface has a number of spots that are nothing like FCS. plus you can't upgrade from Express to Studio like you can with Logic

so perhaps they are changing up to that idea. make the interface for common elements the same so you can transition from the 'lite' version to the 'pro'. and even perhaps have a similar upgrade path.

Oh Joy. Direct uploads to Facebook.

why not. a lot of studios are embracing facebook as a marketing tool. so why not transition DVD Studio Pro to something that embraces physical media and digital like facebook, youtube, the Extras SDK, or vanilla itunes (in SD and HD) a 'Media Studio' if you will

This is really bad news. I don't want them to dumb down the software to make it more accessible to 'prosumers'. I am a long standing editor having used Avid for many years and moved over to FCP with a bit of resistance from some clients because they felt it was not a professional system. I proved to them that it was a great tool and perfect (and in many ways more capable than Avid) for the job.
A move by Apple to make the software more useable by people who are not editors will only open up the market to people getting hold of FCP and saying they are editors, undercutting the cost of us real editors and taking work away but ultimately giving the clients less value for money because they have people with little or no experience editing for them. Look what happened when DV cameras came out, all of a sudden people with no training and no real ability picked one up and said they could could be a camera person, this kind of happened with FCP when it came out but at least there was still a learning curve and the software, although much cheaper than Avid wasn't within the grasp of everyone but if the costs come down anyone who has the software will think they can be an editor! This will make the market a much more diluted and difficult place to work in!
This is probably the news Avid has been waiting to hear for a long time and will rejuvenate the market for them.

I thought that was what FCE was for?

I'm a certified FCP editor and if they dumb down FCP, I'm going Avid.

Me too. Luckily I just relearned Avid MC for a client project I had recently. I'll be one step ahead from my competitors once Apple eats a bag of d1cks.

Aww Apple, you are making my transition to Windows so much easier. Shake to Nuke, FCP to premiere. I remember when Apple bought shake i thought it was going to be great, all of apple's development power behind a super powerful composting package, instead, the kill off all of the platforms and then kill development entirely. It seems like they are doing this with FCP too, now that Premiere is back on the mac, and the high end Autodesk suite is available too, apple had decided that it isnt worth competing. Soon they will just be a consumer electronics company instead of the company that makes the machines that pros use to make their stuff.

Oh no ...

"Randy Ubillos, the developer who completely redesigned iMovie in 2008"

That should read the guy who totally screwed up a nice clean program, made it a confusing mess, "integrated" it so deeply with iPhoto that the slightest problem causes it to lose its references to the movie files, has an ambiguous and strange method of defining what you can safely "delete" etc.

This guy should embrace his destiny, which is to write dumbed-down but ultimately confusing Windows "Wizards".

First on Windows we saw "Hi. I am the MS Word Wizard. I noticed you are typing a letter ...".

What is this guy go to do as an encore to screwing up iMovie ...... "Hi. I am the FCPro Wizard. I noticed you are making a movie. Can I get in your way?"

This is great news. It is unlikely Apple will strip out pro features and effectively neuter the program. Instead, it sounds like they plan to increase the usability of FCP to make it more approachable to a broader range of users. As someone who spends 10-14 hours a day with the finicky beast, this can only be a good thing.

I have to agree with this...It's very unlikely that they will strip features out, however the UI and usability of the program is long overdue for a complete overhaul. I'm looking forward to the next release and reserving judgement until its out and I can get my hands on it!

"It's gonna be awesome"

I would actually pay money to hear Jobs to admit at least once that:

- "You know what, guys... We screwed up,big time. Somebody, somewhere screwed up and this is what we can release now. Sorry, you'll have a better thing in a year, but for now you can use this crappy iThing. Yeah, I know... "i" - we still employ the same monkey to come up with names, but he's getting old now, so who knows... Personally, I think this gadget sucks and I would never spend my own money on it but it's up to you."

This would be magical and revolutionary.

Final cut pro was such a bloat ware app based on ancient Quicktime tech.

With the new quicktime, they are seriously going to do a revamp of final cut pro. I hope they do an UI update while keeping a lot of the same features as the original FCP while adding a lot of user interaction fixes they did with iMovie 09.

Why does apple offer both final cut express and iMovie to begin with? Why not have one consumer product and one pro product instead of 2 consumer and one pro?

Why is everyone bitching, and acting like babies? Apple obviously isn't going to dumb down final cut pro, but make it more usable, such as logic. Does anyone remember what a POS logic 7 was? Logic 8&9 have become prosumer apps, and apple will do the same with Final Cut. Duh, they've already done this with aperture 3 (FACES). So everyone, should applaud, and not bitch, especially since it shouldn't take a degree to learn Final Cut. It should be, and will be much more intuitive, and yet professional.

Avid who? If you want to edit on that POS than go ahead, nobody's stopping you.:D

Pro stands for 'prostitute', wanting to please everybody.

Oh great, they put the toolbag who wrecked iMovie in charge of Final Cut. Wonderful. I absolutely HATE iMovie 08/09. The interface is bloody terrible. It's a step back in almost every respect. I still use iMovie 06 and will continue to do so until it simply stops working with later versions of OS X.

So Final Cut, which has a heavy foothold in the pro video industry, is going to get dumbed down. BRILLIANT MOVE APPLE! Put that 'tard in charge and screw your pro user market in the endless attempt to appeal to people with double digit IQs!

Don't worry, it will match the brand new C2D MacBook Pros!

I sent an email to Steve Jobs about the Apple Insider rumor about an hour ago.

The response back I got was.

"Don't believe everything you read. The next release will be kickass."

But none of what's been said indicates Apple is trying to make FCP into "another iMovie", so far! It sounds more like Apple realizes FCP is overwhelming for prosumers, and they think they can redo the product so it will be more useful to that crowd, while retaining the functionality the pro users need.
Apple may simply think it's time to drop Final Cut Express as a product, and integrate it into FCP, courtesy of choosing a more "basic" mode in it?
That's what surprises me - I really don't see how FCP can be overwhelming for prosumers.
Satisfying the prosumers crowd would mean redesigning the interface and I don't see how you can make it better - it's a great interface already. Dumbing-down seems the only solution, except of course making some hybrid interface design, which seems unrealistic.
On the other hand, Aperture 3 is awesome, so I guess we'll see...

Apple is said to be revamping their Final Cut Pro product to appeal to a more mainstream audience rather than high end professionals.

What? Then how is it Final Cut PRO?
It focuses on high end professionals who know what they're doing, or are willing to learn the process. AKA, people who do serious video editing, not people who make 'Summer Vacation 2010' compilations.

Apple, please improve iMovie so it appeals to the mainstream audience, and keep Final Cut Pro directed at its current customers.

Premiere has really made in roads and in many ways is better than FCP now.

Well the fact is, Media Composer 5 is set to overshadow FCP in almost every aspect. Which is why im dusting off the cob webs and jumping back into MC4 after 5 years. So it makes sense as to why Apple would be finally coming back to FCP. The great thing is, AVID runs awesome on a mac so no sweat off my back changing tools. My only gripe is, if Apple really does "dumb down" Final Cut, everyone one and their mom will think they are editors saturating the workforce with more monkeys. The exact opposite of what the industry needs right now.

Don't think I like the sound of prosumer... Final Cut Pro could use some work, but I was not a fan iMovie 08 at all. I'm currently making my way through the Apple Pro Training book to get certified.
