Update: all new 2017 iMacs are RAM upgradable so you don't have to buy the über expensive Apple RAM. such a relief. Saturday I'll be ordering a new 27" i7 iMac

Umm as others have said: this from the Apple Store.....re 27"
"8GB (two 4GB) of 2400MHz DDR4 memory; four SO-DIMM slots, user-accessible
Configurable to 16GB, 32GB or 64GB"

But I guess we will know for sure when sites like OWC offer DIMMs for the the new 27" iMacs;)
I chatted with Crucial and they said YES user upgradeable and they have a web page to order for 2017 17" iMac memory. I ordered 32GB kit (2 16GB sticks) for $250.

So your plan was to sell your iMac in the week after WWDC? What a genius plan. You had to wait until this exact week of course. You couldn't just have sold it a few weeks earlier. And then you were taken completely by surprise, because who could have guessed that new iMacs would be announced?! Some people... And the value of your iMac already drops after the announcement, not just when the new iMacs are actually available.
Yeah. Some people. I am aware of all those facts. Guess I waked right into that one.:D

Thanks for sharing this, so they have increased it from 24 GB to 32 GB. Still for an iMac purchase, SSD is worth the investment.
If by "fusion drive" one can spec an SSD with a 2 TB 7200 RPM HDD, that would be quite nice. With the small SSD configurations (24/32 GB) does Apple use the SSD for paging? I would tend to guess no, as paging can entail frequent writes, which can be wearing on SSDs. With 16 or more GB memory, I think I just answered my own question with the small SSD size.

Are you going to try and see if you can use a total of 40 GB or remove and hold onto the factory installed memory? I wonder if it will even boot with 40 GB.

I wonder what an appropriate amount or RAM would be for keeping open simple graphics programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Muse, and Capture One at the same time? And, my son like to use iMovie a lot; we may get Final Cut Pro. Any ideas? I know 8GB is worthless. How much is appropriate, though?

Direct from Apple's Configurator:
The 1TB Fusion Drive pairs a 1TB hard drive with 32GB of fast SSD — enough to store important macOS files and applications to ensure fast startup, near instant wake from sleep, and quick application launching, with room left over for your most frequently used files and apps. The 2TB and 3TB Fusion Drives pair a larger hard drive with 128GB of fast SSD storage, providing even more space for your most frequently used files.

Which makes the lack of a 2TB fusion drive on the 21 inch even worse - you are stuck with a tiny 32 GB SSD partition, compared to the 128GB offered in the 2TB 2016 model I own.

How large is the SSD on the "Fusion Drive"? It used to only be 24 GB or some such. I also wonder if it can come configured with a higher RPM HDD than 5400.

Yeah I had the same question. I went looking for the answer on Apple's website, but in typical Apple style, they seem to figure customers don't need to know such technical information. Under 'Tech Specs' it just says '1TB Fusion Drive'.

Does anyone know?

*EDIT* Ah, I see the answer just a few posts above…

Not '24/32 GB'—the choice is between 32 GB SSD (with the 1TB Fusion drive) and 128GB SSD (with the 2TB and 3TB Fusion Drives). The latter sounds like a good option to me. Note, they don't tell you how fast the HD is on the higher-end iMacs. They do happen to mention that it's '5400-rpm' on the lower end 21 inch models. What does that imply—that it's faster on the other models?

Hi, I have an old MacBook Pro with a 1Tb SSD drive.
If I buy the new 27-inch IMac, I can order the 1Tb SSD option and also put my old 1Tb SSD drive on it?
If I'm not wrong, the SSD only configuration uses the internat PCIe slot, so the SATA slot is empty.

I’m a bit surprised about the figures given for the display. What was the brightness of the previous generation displays if this one is 43% brighter? Only 350 nits? My iMac (late 2014) gave out 467 nits last time I checked, which means 500 is only a 7% increase.

But yours wasn't a 5K iMac, which may be the explanation. Apples to Apples, so to speak...

Different reviewers had different results, but the Late 2015 iMac 5K's display was rated as high as 480 nits and as low as 382 nits. So the Mid-2017 iMac 5K display is as little as 4% to as much as 31% brighter.

Perhaps some of the reviewers missed that you can adjust the brightness? :) Anyway, mine has the 27 inch 5K display, so size difference does not explain the large numbers.

I'm beginning to suspect they twist the numbers quite freely on their keynotes... :)

I would rather wait for iMac Pro. Will other colors be available?

If I were in a position to need an iMac Pro, the last thing I would care about is the color of the monitors backside, which I'd never see. Focus would be meeting customer expectations at a profit.

Perfect timing, as my college is still planning to get new 27" iMacs for their Fine Arts building. We plan to replace the early 2009 24" Core 2 Duo iMacs in the video editing lab with them, and will probably go with either the 3.4 or 3.5 GHz models.

Really? That ugly Asus monitor? It looks cheap. Apple isn't going to marginalize their logo and branding. I don't think it's unreasonable to want something new. Just unrealistic. One day I'm sure we'll have an anti-gravity base and the screen will float. Or maybe there won't be a screen at all, just a holographic projection. But until we get there, the only option is to tweak the existing formula and I have yet to see another monitor or all-in-one that looks remotely as elegant as the iMac. Furthermore, minimizing the branding only makes the iMac look more like everyone else, all the others who have copied Apple. There's no way they're going to do something that makes the iMac look less like an iMac.
I have a similar Asus monitor and it is very high quality.

Took a look at these this a.m. - makes the most sense for me to get a mid level 27" with 512SSD and upgrade the ram myself. The text appeared to be the same size to me on both sized iMacs, so the 27" offers me more bang for less bucks in this case. Will definitely wait a bit though.

As far as brighter screens, I couldn't really tell in the store, but will go back to test them every so often.

Are you kidding me? Damn you Apple. This refresh wasn't supposed to happen until October. I'm trying to sell off my 2015 5k model this week, now the value just dropped. Thanks!

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For WayFarers 5k imac can never come to any good

My college just got the new 21.5 Retina 4K iMacs for their video editing lab! (They originally planned to go with 27-inch models until the recent refresh in the iMac line.) They got the top-of-the-line models with 3.4 GHz quad-core i5 processors, and they have 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB solid state drives, ATI Radeon Pro 560 graphics card with 4 GB dedicated VRAM, and the latest MacOS software. They currently have Adobe CS6 on them as well, but we plan to upgrade to the newer Creative Cloud, along with getting Final Cut Pro X, and the latest iMovie and GarageBand versions.
Our TV studio director was shocked at first because he thought all 21-inch iMacs had shared video RAM, but me and the IT department were able to show and tell him that ours do indeed have dedicated video RAM, and he sure was surprised by that.
Plus, they sure do look good in our video editing lab as well (as Macs are designed to be visually appealing.)
