**Apple REFUSES to Accept Defective iMac Screen Returns!**

This is IndustrialSpace's very first day at the MacRumors forums, but he seems to be having difficulty getting veteran forum members riled up with this thread.

Can't we show him a little welcoming hospitality and try to sound at least a little bit exasperated or even slightly interested?

The problem is that Apple like any other corporation go by percentage of complaints. The "typical" customer does not notice the yellow tinge, in fact they think it is normal and sometimes don't care enough to exchange it. Not everybody knows about forums like these so they settle for less.
However, "us" the more ANAL customers who have owned Apple products and/or are more tech savvy, we know these screens are the same as every other consumer screen.

THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Apple is a good company but they are out there to make money and unfortunately all corporations are like that. Unless more people start complaining about these screens and by more I mean the typical unknowledgeable customer and get the media involved, we won't see anything done, simple as that.

Fixed that! 😉 Now, just to be clear, I do agree with you that Apple is out to make money and they are no different than any other company in terms of it's reactions to the geek customers which we are. I don't have the new iMac, but I understand how you feel but companies have a right to refuse exchanges after a certain amount, thus offering the customer a refund.

I will side with Apple in this case as long as they make a diligent effort to rectify all customers who have legitimate complaints.

I think people's experiences of trying to get satisfaction have been mostly supportive but uneven. There have been posts by people, e.g., in the long thread on this in the Apple support discussion forums, in which they purport to have been told that they could not make any more exchanges after making two or more. If memory serves, one guy was told this after exchanging his second and then the third arrived with a cracked screen, upon which the store manager relented and exchanged that one too.

I also think Apple is trying to keep this quiet and just doing a mediocre job of it (or, perhaps a good job given how widespread the problems are) - they have deleted a lot of posts from the long thread in the discussion forum on it, including one of mine that was directed to letting your friends and family know what was going on so that they didn't get defective units.

IMHO, seeking vengeance on the blogger for publicizing the problem rather than, e.g., double checking and sending him a good unit, was not the ideal way for them to approach this...

Good for him. For $1000+ on hardware, I at least expect it to work properly out of the box. Repair is not a appropriate response. I want a perfect, working-out-of-the-box, not-taken-apart machine.

Actually, I just returned my second unit yesterday for a defective screen and got a refund.

Also, I am starting to think that is largely an LG problem and that Apple is also getting screwed on this as well to a degree. Why?

The Dell u2410, 3008wfp and HP equivalent to the Dell u2410 all suffer from gradation issues. They are all LG panels. Also, Dell is calling their messed up screens "within spec" and buyers are getting screwed. The upcoming u2711, which will be shown in a week, is the same panel as the new iMac, but in a matte finish. We will see if Dell's version has yellow tint on it.

Really, the screen market seems to have gone to crap. I really have no idea what to even do at this point. I am also loving working on my matte screen again, so might just wait for the next mac pro and try to find a decent screen.

Someone on here awhile back said the screen problems would NEVER be fixed because of the phosphorous coating required on white LED backlighting. I'm beginning to wonder if that is true.

What exactly is libel about anything he is saying? Perhaps if it wasn't true or he was out to defame the company, but they are a public company that deals with the public - This is one person's experience dealing with said company. I see nothing slanderous about it, and would like you to explain how you can even begin to throw around words like libel.

hmm damaging apples reputation? loss of sales in iMac's?
i know already 4 people who have canceled or altered or changed plans all together ,because of the yellow tinge and other small niggles on the new iMac's and one because of lack of blue ray
1 of them canceled his order and ordered a macpro instead and a 27 inch dell monitor which is already available
1 sticks to his iMac 24 " until it stops working now
1 has canceled his order for a 21.5" and ordered a mini and a 23"HP monitor
1 keeps his iMac 20" and waits for summer
the one who hoped for blue ray bought a sony vaio RT series because of the blueray reader and writer..he was expecting apple would build one into the iMac instead of a sd card reader
ok in my opinion the iMac looks faaaaar better then this black square sony which only has 25.5 inch and even cost more then the iMac 😕
...but i like the keyboard of the sony with touchpad instead of a numberpad ..no need for separate mouse if you sit a bit further away but its black too 🙁

Well just do a search, there is official info and pictures on the u2711 out there. It's being shown at CES in a week too.

seems the tide is turning a bit though on the thread as it lives. Folks should be more dissatisfied with the lackluster response from apple.

yeah, my first few posts on this site (finally decided to register!), but I have been perusing actively (this site and others incld. the Apple forums) at least since the early summer. I am REALLY amped to get an iMac. Excruciatingly so! - believe me. I've got the funds for a top of the line iMac with all the bells and whistles but have to use serious restraint to wait for a revision or to hold off on giving my money to a PC manufacturer.

This screen issue is a real bummer for me.

Apple historically had a very small niche customer but over the last several years have opened up their market to more PC-based individuals, like myself. I first purchased an iPod nano and found it to be a nice little device. Recently, I also bought an iPhone and am very happy with it so far. My next move is to buy into the apple brand and own a killer iMac, but these tech issues have kept me away.

lol... Apple sold a shade over 3 million desktop computers in their last full reported year, worldwide. In the grand scheme of things, Ballmer was right, they are a rounding error.

If we were to keep his mouth shut until he got one that works, well that would be a whole different story.

Now he just pissed them off, and they're probably tired of sending out new iMacs to him every single day.

Yeah, actually I was stupefied when they deleted mine - it was not even remotely over the line in any way and deleted almost immediately after posting, with a message from the moderator making an absurd stretch to the terms of use barring polls, and it was crystal clear to me at that point that they were actively attempting to control the content and spread of the discussion.

Well, Apple did say that they would repair his iMac at an Apple Store:


It's not like they told him to F off and that they wouldn't fix his problem.

It's only the screen that needs to be fixed, not the whole machine.

How can Apple repair the screen when they're still unsure of what is causing these problems? I would love to have my screen fixed, because my neck and shoulders are getting sore from lugging these iMacs to and from the Apple Store.

LOL we are anal aren't we? I think that is because we always have Apple's back, when they come out with a new product (most of us) will find a way to buy it, we tell our friends and family how great Apple is and I guess that when the product does nt meet our expectations (considering the amount of money we spend) we get angry and frustrated.

I think Apple has to make it nice to all of us fanboys because at the end of the day, we are the ones who have helped their company to grow and to be where it is today. So yes they should kiss our a$$es...

While not exactly the same situation... I used to work as a manager in retail. Keep in mind, you don't know the full story here. If the blogger is upset, of course he would be more likely to tell you all the negative things Apple has said and done. While not a certainty.. but you dont know if he did something to cause Apple to respond that way, either.

I used to love getting calls from Corporate... a complaint came in from a customer and their side of the story was pretty accurate, but they left out the parts where they told an employee to F off or threw a temper tantrum in the store.

If I was treated with respect and the customer remained calm, I was always willing to help them. Once they started acting like a 3 year old, I could care less about helping them or keeping their business. Like I said, not perfectly related to this situation, but just some food for thought. Maybe I was wrong for feeling that way in a management position, but oh well.

I just find it interesting that someone would make that type of statement but are posting on a Mac forum, let alone the iMac forum which you are so humbly informing people that they can get better options elsewhere. 😛

this is a game changer for many people i would assume... if this monitor is priced reasonably, it will once again showcase how someone could build an equivalent, or even much more powerful PC based machine compared to the imac.. at least it does for me.

As everyone knows, apples do come at a price premium over their PC counterparts. When this iMac came out, it was the first to feature a display with such high resolution, LED back lighting, and IPS panels. Now that dell is coming out with the same exact display, it will be interesting to see how much they sell it for.. My guess is the cost of the monitor and a smoking fast i7 computer with better graphics card will be several hundreds cheaper then the imac.

exactly... based on all the forum posts and whatnot, apple just simply exchanges the device for another one, often with the same problem. They obviously don't know whats causing the issues.

I honestly do believe its something wrong with the LG panel but the fact that apple has had so many returns for the same problem, they should be responsible for at least rectifying the problem instead of continually selling more and more units plagued with the same problems.

You can't place the blame soley on LG and leave apple out of it. Think about when Ford had that huge problem with Firestone tires.... It was the responsibility of BOTH companies.

Apple needs to step up and acknowledge that there is a problem and rectify it.

I've used plenty of (defective) Apple products, been on the end of really shoddy service and even taken them to court.

I feel qualified to comment on this kind of thing, if you don't like it, don't respond.
